Murder in Mahim
OTT : Reliance JIO
4/5

This series is about a murder at Mahim station and just one of the many that happen later. Vijay Raaz is the investigating officer supported by a lady police officer. Investigation is real style " Koi Naya Lead Hai kya" - Nahi hai? Ok, tum ghar jao", which is how an investigation happens unlike super power forces shown in most investigations by detectives.

Ashutosh Rana is an ex-Journalist and due to personal reasons gets entangled in this investigation along with Raaz.

Vijay Raaz is one of my favorite actors and I’m glad he got a full lead role after a long time. Just seeing him on the screen is a pleasure and I can say the same for Ashutosh Rana who is an equally ace actor.

This is a slow burner with a heavy dose of LBGTQ theme and some of the scenes I felt was unwarranted and little embarrassing to watch with family (I had to quickly forward the scenes).

Otherwise, it’s a good watch.

Mirzapur season 3 to stream on Prime from July 5.

GAANTH Chapter 1- Jamnaapaar JIO CINEMA

With PAATALLOK still fresh in my mind, the word Jamnapaar caught my attention and that Manav Vij was starring in it, I decided to give the series a go. The premise of the series is based on the real life Burari murders but the writers were unable to wrap a story around and went with too many twists and angles to come up with a convincing plot. The series though is successful in holding the attention despite the duration of each episode. Manav Vij and Monika Panwar were in their elements and despite the loopholes in the storyline, they excel. The first season has ended with a question and it's imperative that the makers come up with the second season soon. Murder mysteries should not stretch for too long, the interest wanes up. Good watch but gets repetitive after a while.

Rating: 3/5

Gaanth Chapter 1: Jamnaa Paar (Hindi)

The TV / Streaming shows thread (no spoilers please)-1_.jpg

Loosely based on Burari murders and like BHPian Abhi had pointed out, it was the writing that sort of messed it up. Too many melodrama in between and could have easily cut down on the time. You feel they kind of ran out of ideas and rushed the last two episodes (you will notice that as these two episodes are atleast 15 mins short when compared to others).

Good acting the leads and it will definitely keep you hooked. Now that the series ended abruptly, eagerly waiting for season 2. Hope they release it soon.

Rating - 3.5/5 (Jio Cinema). Recommended.

Eric on Netflix
Rating 4/5

An amazing slow-burn mini-series with six episodes, featuring an ensemble cast including Benedict Cumberbatch and Gaby Hoffman. The story centers around a main character who is an alcoholic with mental health issues and also a brilliant puppeteer. Simultaneously, it delves into the dark side of 1980s New York City, touching on themes of racism, homophobia, extreme poverty, and drug addiction. The series highlights the ongoing issue of displacing the homeless, minorities, and those living at or below the poverty line to make way for new high-end hotels and residential buildings, neglecting the needs of the vulnerable. While the series starts slowly, the climax is even more impactful as the story unfolds.

Good watch for all who are in for a short series.

Agree with your comments on "Murder in Mahim" and would rate it 5/5. Found the dialogues pretty crisp and acting superb.

Looks like they have kept the door open for Season 2. I think the kidney transplant angle has not been uncovered. Couple of times when the Inspector visited the hospital, it was preempted by a call from the senior police officer.

In my mind this remains an open issue :)

Presumed Innocent on Apple TV+

The series is about a lawyer (a public prosecutor) who's accused of murdering his colleague. Only three of the eight episodes are out, but the series is looking to be pretty well made.

Fargo Season 5 is now available for streaming on Prime video.

Jamnapaar - Amazon Mini TV - 4/5
Good series which revolves around the ambitions of a CA and his fight with/against the different cultures of the society.

Lootere - Hotstar - 3/5
Though a bit slow, it still is a good watch, except the last bit of fight sequence.

Kota Factory Season 3 Netflix

The new season of Kota Factory is here and it is , according to me, the best season so far. The characters have finally grown up and are shown with all their frailties and insecurities, which makes the characters more real. The writing is as good as it gets and the finale episode culminates with joy and sadness with equal measure. There is one scene where Vaibhav just breaks into a monologue about the pressures of studying and that scene will probably rasonate with everyone who is in the same boat as he was. Will look forward the next one. Recommended watch.

Tour de France-Unchained (2023 Season)
OTT : Netflix
5/5

I started enjoying cycling ever since I bought my bike in 2022. I do it for pleasure and not as an exercise or to lose weight.

I happened to watch the 2022 season and found it amazingly gripping and now with the new season in, it feels so familiar that I almost know every bicyclist in this championship.

I used to love F1 but, ever since they downgraded their engines, I moved to MotoGP and now after Rossi is gone, I stopped watching MotoGP as well. :D

Being an auto enthusiast, I would have never imagined that cycling is so competitive and is in fact more grueling than any other sport, especially Tour de France.

How they shot this entire series and showcase stage-by-stage is an absolutely wonderful watch. The preparation, team work, strategy, thrill and excitement is better than even F1 and MotoGP.

And, the cherry on the cake, is the spectacular locales of France.

Don't miss it even if you are not a bicycling enthusiast.

Going to go against the tide and give a 3/5 rating for Panchayat Season 3.

I think they just lost the very essence of the show that made it so beautiful and enjoyable: the simplicity, the good/simple-naturedness of people, and the charm of village life.

Giving some characters a villainous arc, violence and giving the show an overall negative theme: just didn't do it for me. I started the show the day it came out, and managed to finish it only last night. Just for the sake of it.

Hope they fix this in Season 4, if there is one.

'I'll get to the bottom of this. If anyone can I can, you know why - because I'm the king of bottoms, haha' - Laszlo in What We Do In The Shadows

This quote pretty much sums up Matt Berry. Self- disparaging, self-aware, ridiculous, but so very Brit. Matt Berry is the name of the actor, but you pretty much see any show with Matt Berry and no matter what the name of the character, you will be seeing Matt Berry perform. You know when you're told a certain actor can only do one thing and makes a career out of it and you groan, thinking what if they could really act a little more (looking at you Pankaj Tripathi nodding your head in every frame :p) - well, Matt Berry has mastered the scam of being himself - and you can't stop watching him!

Matt Berry is an English actor who got famous as Douglas Reynholm in 'The IT Crowd' a show that I confess I've never really watched other than a smattering. So when my BIL highly recommended a show called 'Toast of London' me and my wife didn't know what hit us when we ran fully into Matt Berry's genius as Steven Toast.

All he has to do is speak and how he intones and uses words - they are killer. He just has a really stupid way of saying simple words that make me laugh out loud!

So my first recommendation : Toast of London (Netflix)

The TV / Streaming shows thread (no spoilers please)-toast-london.jpg

If you're into BIZARRE British humour, bordering on farce, ridiculous, no better show than this. It has one eyed (like literally one eye in the middle of the head) characters, a woman who is such a hoarder an episode ends with Toast going to her house on a date and literally crawling around the ceiling on stacks of newspapers and stuff. What is it about - a washed out theatre actor called Steven Toast who is trying got get jobs. And each time it gets more and more ridiculous. His only steady gig - a voice over job that has some of the most ridiculous and LOL gags in recent times.

Just google - Clem Fandango - and you'll see the best of. In fact the guy who plays Clem Fandango, Shazad Latif, has become a star thanks to the show, even headlining a few movies, including as the hero of a recent one, 'What's love got to do with it', made by Jemima Goldsmith (Imran Khan's ex) a rom-com about a white girl marrying a Pakistani boy.

Sample - Toast is given a script to do a voice over for a bee-hive and asks the producers which bee are you asking me to do the buzzing for because there are too many on the screen! And another : he will always use the script, he is very proper. So when the VO guys ask him to 'improvise' he can't. Has to look at the script again. The script - one word. 'Yes' :D

You'll either love it or hate it, but it's mad fun if you like this kind of humour. It's not Monty Pythonesque, it's not with a point or something to say. It's just stupid silly mindless fun.

Jumping from that -

Toast of Tinseltown (I'd rather not say!)

Steven Toast goes to Hollywood. Still has Clem Fandango and the others but more ridiculous, batshit crazy characters join as Toast tries to get into the latest Star Wars movie!

Year Of The Rabbit (BBC iPlayer)

The TV / Streaming shows thread (no spoilers please)-year-rabbit.jpg

Matt Berry playing a bright but bumbling detective in Victorian England. And still being Matt Berry. I think I like his style of humour because he is pretty much playing the buffoon, poking fun at himself and doesn't punch down. The period setting is done very well, the production and the lighting is great and even the mysteries are pretty good. Matt Berry only makes it much more fun to watch.

What We Do In The Shadows (Hotstar)

Of course this is what is the most easy to access. And puts the bat in batshit crazy! It's a show about a group of vampires who live in Staten Island with a familiar and try to navigate the modern world while still being vampires. It's shot like a documentary, with a 'crew' following them to show their lives.

It's on season 5 and one of the very few shows that have been consistently funny in every season. Not just that, one of the few shows that actually came from a really funny movie of the same name, made by the brilliant Taika Waititi (Jodi Rabbit, Thor: Love and Thunder, Our Flag Means Death), and made it better.

Matt Berry plays Laszlo, a vampire who can transform into a bat at will. Only it is Matt Berry - so he has to say 'Bat' for the transformation! He also has a love of his life Nadja who he lives with and a lot of the comedy comes from his 'my darling' and him. If you see nothing else, do see this, it's really really good fun. The show even has a modern vampire - an 'energy vampire' Colin Robinson who works in HR in a company and feeds on people's energy to survive! It's witty, sharp and really funny.

So have a good and happy weekend folks!
