Neither can I now!

carboy is correct. We use what can you make out of this only in the literal, physical sense of manufacturing something

I feel all three are correct. I prefer to use the second one, but one can always use the other two too.
Sorry, but the second one is wrong, although I can see how you might arrive at it.

Where are the punctuations my dear Thad ? E. ? Ginathom ? Surely you missed a comma there.

Gadzooks, may I ask why? And how do you think I have arrived at it?

If it was what can you make out from this.

Otherwise, my commas sometime get into a coma!

Re: A YetiGuideŽ : How To Post In Proper English

I had to make a project file for my school a few days back, and it had a page where I had to mention details like name, roll number etc.

The format was :-

Name : Ankush Jain
Class : Blah blah
School : DAV Public School, Patiala

So my dad said that since I already had written 'school' in the left, I shouldn't use the word again, as it was redundant. Although I agree with him on the redundant part, I don't think that :-

School : DAV Patiala

looks OK. School is a description for a field, and whatever the school's name is, has to go in there....

....on a second thought, that [not using 'school' again] doesn't seem wrong either. I'm confused. What's your take ? DAV stands for 'Dayanand Anglo Vedic' , and saying that the school's name is 'Dayanand Anglo Vedic Patiala' doesn't seem quite right either.

Anyway, I'm confused. What's your take ?

For me, just writing 'DAV Patiala' seems to be incomplete.

Anyway, let me wait for expert opinions. Thad Sir? Sam Sir?

Re: A YetiGuideŽ : How To Post In Proper English

I think that is the way it is done in U.S. Where did you graduate ? Riverdale High. They leave out the school because everyone knows that it is a school, I don't think it is appropriate here. It sounds incomplete, in fact we have primary, secondary, High and higher secondary schools here.

I think 'school' in DAV school patiala is an integral part of the name. not a qualification of the school. a poor example would be if your answer was "the local govt school", then it's not a part of the school's name. what if your school was "kendriya vidyalaya"?

Riverdale high is just the american phenomenon of shortening things. Like they took out america from USA long back.

EDIT: "The local Govt" sounds much more weird , replacing "matric" with "matric school" sounds like an appropriate example. Although that does not indicate what school you are referring to.

Re: A YetiGuideŽ : How To Post In Proper English

This is one of those things where local usage rules, and it is no good a Brit, or an American trying to lay down a rule!

But, if you ask

I'd say that if "School" is part of the institution's name, you should repeat it. Imagine if it wasn't at the end:

School: Xxyyzz School for Boys

To me, Aabbcc High or Ddeeff Secondary is colloquial, not formal.

I think I'm saying the same thing as Vivek.

But then there is no "Local Govt. School" anywhere in India or elsewhere. I think you gave the wrong analogy here. It is either Corporation HSS or Corp Middle school or "Govt. HSS, Arumbakkam" or "Govt. HSS, Virugambakkam" etc. Whereas Riverdale High is quite precise in conveying the message just like they have addresses in NYC 142 East etc.

Would you read any further , I gave a better example (I think) after that.

So is "United States". Does that make it right/complete?

So I used 'School : DAV School, Patiala'. Seems alright.

Thanks, everyone.
