Re: Laser Eye Surgery - LASIK discussion

Hi all, I'm 28 and have a power of -3.5/-3.75. I am from Mumbai and am planning to get my vision corrected. It would mean a great deal if the members of this forum belonging to Mumbai could suggest me the top surgeons per their best knowledge to go ahead with the vision correction.

Regards,
Stallion_96

I will be going there in a couple of weeks to get detailed info about the surgery and tests.
Got a similar quote from my doctor in Delhi. I got the pre-checks done for around 5k (took half a day) and was given the green signal. I think my insurance covers up-till 50k. Need to take a final decision on getting it done.

Re: Laser Eye Surgery - LASIK discussion

Finally, after dilly dallying for more than a decade, got my LASIK done at the age of 43.

Why now?

I was getting reading power as well and always wanted to get rid of contact lenses which I have been using since my 12 standard.

The main intention was to get rid of myopia and use reading glasses as and when needed. Getting rid of the lenses was an addon benefit.

Got the LASIK done by SENTRA Clinic, Malad, Mumbai.
The surgery for both eyes were done in 15 mins.
Overall time taken - 1 Hour
Cost for both eyes inclusive - 50k INR

Precautions:

No headbath and face washing for 7 days.
Safety glasses provided to avoid any possible injury during the healing period.
Multiple drops prescribed
Omega3 tablets prescribed
Antacid and painkillers for only 2 days.

Vision is slightly blurry. Apparently, it will become better in the coming days.

Avoiding travel and prolonged screen usage.

Cheers,
Raj

Re: Laser Eye Surgery - LASIK discussion

Congratulations on finally moving ahead with the treatment. I have been thinking about it myself for a long period.

I have a quick question about your two points below and it would be nice if you could answer them.

Did the doctors mention how long the situation would last? (like vision blurriness or avoiding prolonged screen usage)

I was told that I can resume work within 2 days and I can start driving as well in around a week. The doctor was very much vocal that I can use mobile, laptop and TV right from the word go however I restricted the usage.

The blurry vision should get rectified in 4-5 days depending on the person. According to the doctor, some people experience it for a week, for some, it may be 2 weeks as well.

Its been 48 Hours since I walked out of the surgery at 5:00 PM on Wednesday.

Vision is improving. There was an overall haziness till yesterday. Now the lights have a halo around them. Blurriness is still there.

Was watching the F1 Qualifying sometime back and I had difficulty reading the names and lap times, they were a bit blurry.

Every night, I feel like I should remove my contact lenses and then realise that they are no longer there .

Trust this helps.

Cheers,
Raj

Re: Laser Eye Surgery - LASIK discussion

Someone in my close family is suffering from keratoconus . It is thinning if the cornea and slow permanent loss of vision, it is probably a side effect of Lasik.
Indians are genetically cursed with a thinner cornea , Lasik makes it worse. Take a call assessing the risks. It is an unnecessary surgery, I have been wearing glasses since I was 8-9 years old . I don't want to risk it.
Unless glasses are severely hampering your lifestyle don't do it. What if you are one of the unlucky ones?

In my case, an eye topography test was done which determines the thickness of the cornea and checks other factors and post this test, it is determined whether a LASIK is to be done.

Same here, wearing glasses since age 11-12 and know about LASIK from the past 20 years. I wanted to wear contact lenses but didn't have the confidence to do it. Also the effort required to maintain them always put me off. Whenever I thought of LASIK, I also thought of its side effects. Surgery on any part of the body can't be compared to eye surgery.

These are some of the links that show how LASIK can go wrong:

It’s improving post every sleep cycle. The eye drops are on.

However Whatever the doctors say regd resuming work or driving in 2-3 days is only gyaan. Realistic time period in my opinion should easily be 10 days, minimum.

Cheers,
Raj

Great to know you took the step and hope you are happy with the results. Can you mention which procedure you chose ? ConturaVision or Lasik ? Also my understanding was that SMILE was a good option for people with higher side power or with thin corneas. Did you explore that option as well ? Would be interested to know as I have couple of kids who will in a few years will looking to get some form of surgical correction.

Re: Laser Eye Surgery - LASIK discussion

Having had to wear glasses since the age of 10, I was very keen on getting Lasik done. But a retinal surgeon I know asked me the same thing:

This doctor is a very qualified, very renowned eye specialist, so I thought there must be a good reason for his reluctance to recommend the procedure. He's also not an old guy, so not being familiar with the latest procedures was not the reason. Reluctantly decided against doing it. And have managed just fine. Not saying that no one should do it, but consult with a specialist, not just any eye doctor, and get an individual assessment. Something as critical as eyesight should not be risked in a mass surgical procedure. (All those adverts of doctors/hospitals doing 'x number of lasik surgeries a day'.)

I've managed quite an active schedule with contacts. Spent over 20 days in the mountains on an adventure course, using disposable contact lenses. Also swim pretty regularly using powered swimming goggles. Contact lenses do take some getting used to the first couple of months, but I've been using contacts for over 20 years now, with no issues. The good quality disposable ones are very light on the eyes. I only use contacts when I'm going outdoors for some activity, I use my glasses when reading or working.

Re: Laser Eye Surgery - LASIK discussion

I am 40+ wearing glasses for 25+ years. I recently had a eye test, having -2.5 in both eyes with Cylindrical power of -2.25. So have no problems switching to progressive ones.

Doctors is suggesting to go for Lasik as it will help in long run as I am in IT, plus it will push cataract to little later.

Any thoughts on this?

I have had high power since childhood and have also used contacts for 2+ decades. During the pandemic, since it was WFH I stopped using contacts and didn't miss it. I now wear only progressive spectacles bought at Titan Eye+. I also have a spare set of cheaper non-progressive (only distance vision) glasses which I carry along during travel. (I have a morbid fear of my glasses breaking and I being completely incapacitated in a distant place). I am also pre-diabetic. In spite of all this, my doctor also did not suggest Lasik. As long as one is comfortable with glasses, why to go for a surgery?

Re: Laser Eye Surgery - LASIK discussion

As a person who's been wearing prescription glasses since 9th grade, I can definitely say that it's "best" to get LASIK (or equivalent) done after your vision has stabilized.

Nowadays, good quality lenses from Essilor etc. easily cost upwards of 8,000 rupees and you genuinely need 2 pairs of glasses at the very least - one for blue light computer work and one tinted for outdoors. That's approximately 20,000 rupees spent (including frames) every 12 months assuming your eyesight doesn't worsen or you don't break your glasses accidentally. I could list many more cons, but people with an active lifestyle can relate how the glasses are an actual hindrance in any physical activity.

I'm going back to India next week and plan to get LASIK/SMILE done next month or the month after. The difficult part is to see if the best eye clinics in my city offer SMILE or not because a quick AI chat says that SMILE would be best for someone like me who has dry eyes and has to use antihistamine eyedrops regularly.

I'll update next weekend about how the doctor consultation went.
