Hi beejay - I need some help in choosing the right lenses for my sunglasses, and I am hoping you can help me out. I have a Police frame that is good, its just the lenses that have got scratched and need to be replaced. My sight is -1.5 (R and L).
I have visited couple of stores and this is my summary:
* At a high level, there are type types of lenses: Polarized lens and regular lens.
* Polarized lens has the best UV protection. It also cuts the glare considerably better than the regular lens. I don't need any other coating on top of a Polarized lens. I can get a Crizal coating, but not really needed per se. I have got a quote of Rs 8,500 for a pair of lens manufactured by Nova Sport. (+Rs 2,000 for Crizal coating)
* If I buy a regular lens I'll need to have a tint coating + anti-reflective coating + Crizal coating (scratch resistant+hydrophobic, etc). Now, for this the quote from Nova Sport is around Rs 6,500. If I go with Essilor lens, it comes down to Rs 3,500.
My eyes get red and itchy when I go out in the sun. So my main requirement is something that cuts UV the max.
Are Polarized lenses good, and worth the cost? And, are the rates mentioned above reasonable? Any other brand of lens I should be looking at.
Thanks in advance!! |

Hi beejay, Is your online store up now? |
Aravind, Thanks, I am glad that you still remember.
Shifu,
If you want to cut UV, go for the Crizal Forte UV coating from Essilor on their Xperio lenses that are available in GreyGreen tint. MRP is 9000.
Nova lenses are pretty good too. The company that I work for integrated the PD measurement module for their Ipad app for this particular brand and they are good. I use a lens brand from their parent company for night driving and love it. Its called Driverwear Transitions Polarised. Unfortunately, you cannot have Crizal Fotre UV on them and only Crizal A2 is possible. MRP is 9000 again.
I would suggest Xperio with Crizal Forte UV coating for you.
Crizal forte Uv resists scratches,( not scratch proof) none are manufactured till date that is scratch proof. it however comes with a SR booster and is better in terms of resisting scratches.
Repels dust, water and grime- keeping your lenses clear and easier to clean.
Anti Reflective to make your lenses appear slimmer and mostly aesthetic.
and most importantly
Crizal forte UV is ESP 25, which means your eyes are 25 times better protected than without any lenses against UV.
Get in touch with a Vision specialist in your region for more details.

Interesting thread, I have just entered the optical industry a year and a half back. Till now loving every bit of my work, it's an interesting field to work in. And it is quite fascinating to see how people nowadays are getting more and more particular about their eyewear, although many people also tend to neglect their eyesight problems including me :D
Me alongwith 2 other partners have also set up an online store few months back. The response is getting better month after month. This industry has alot of potential in India with many big players wanting to enter the market. I am currently running a B&M store and also an online store. Let me know if anyone of you requires any help regarding eyewear in general.

Thanks for replying! Sorry, few more questions:
* Driverwear Transitions Polarised - Does this help with the glare from other vehicles high beam? If it does, I can sacrifice 100% UV protection and take these lenses instead. Can they be used in sunglasses (meaning are they dark lenses or transition based on sunlight)?
* I was told that Polarised lenses do not need anti-reflective coating. Is this an incorrect statement?
Thanks once again!
Where is your store located.
I had a very good experience with my requirements while in Bombay. Here in Dilli all the shop wants (whether stand alone or a chain) is to shove the highest priced lens without taking in to account what the customer wants.
I am not saying that I do not want the shop to make money on my sale/order but then does every sale have to be for top of the line products only.
I would like to have at least one shop wherein I can be assured that a given lens will not be unnecessarily shoved in to my frames.

Glare is reduced greatly. There is no lens manufactured that can cut out glare 100% from oncoming traffic. All those are tall claims.
I am using it for sometime now and it greatly helps in highway diving on well lit roads. It is not advisable to use on complete dark roads with minimum light.
Yes, they can be used on sunglasses upto 8 base curvature. Can you please attach a picture of your Police here?
The Drivewear are polarised transitions. It has a green hue indoor and the transition effect is brown.
Inside the cabin of your car, it will be green or light brown depending not on the sunlight but UV.
It is a false notion that many people who try to sell transition saying that the lenses become darker with sunlight. The transitions lenses turn dark on more exposure to UV and not sunlight. Silver crystals are activated by UV which make the lenses dark.
True. Polarised do not need additional coating. However coating will aid keeping your lenses cleaner and easier to maintain.
FYI, Pilots cannot use Polarised lenses as the dials black out.
I am really interested in buying Maui Jim sunglasses but the problem is their limited availability. Can anyone tell me where I can find a good range of products in Mumbai? I have checked out flipkart & Amazon and they have a pretty good choice but problem buying sunglasses online is you don't know how it looks on you until you try it out. Any suggestions?

I have dropped a PM to Benny already. I live in Chembur & work in Navi Mumbai. Thanks to the eastern freeway, I can make a trip to downtown Mumbai as well assuming I will find a wider variety to try on there :).

Thanks Beejay,
The Drivewear glasses I ordered from you are extremely good, I am enjoying my driving with them every moment. Thank you so much for listening to my need and suggesting these glasses and of course getting them in a very short span of time. I had tried out many options but nothing seem to work for me. But this one does. My drives have become much more clearer and stressfree. clap:

I have been, I am, and I always will remain fan and user of Rayban Aviators. Just don't like the looks of any other sunglasses!
Always wanted to buy a Oakley Crosshair. Came across one while searching for a Polaroid Sunglass on Amazon India for my friend as he was after my life to sell him the one I have. Was surprised to see the Crosshair Polarized Titanium at less than half the UAE price (AED 1165) at INR 9685 (AED 575). Delivered free within 4 days to home town and hand carried to Dubai by a Tbhpian.
