How does one compare the Automatic movements between Citizen and Seiko? And at similar price points, the overall material quality and craftsmanship between these Japanese brands?

Seiko has the reputation of a 140 years of watch making and intricate design. Their movements rival or surpass the best in the world.

They invented the Quartz and the Spring Drive too. They have a number of creations with Solar power too. Their accuracy is legendary. And their Grand Seiko Range is actually considered to be the best in the world. Legend has it that a Seiko will keep better time than a Rolex. Some of their Grand Seikos go to 35500 beats per hour, which impart that wonderful sweeping movement to the second-hand and are of such high precision that they simply never lose time.

Citizen are good watches. For sure. But they are decidedly not in the same league as Seiko.

Here’s a Seiko Alpinist which is touted as the answer to the Rolex Explorer and the solar powered Seiko PADI Diver. These are ‘definitive’ in their own right.

I aspire one day to a Grand Seiko though. It will be a wonderful addition.

The green Alpinist is a legend. But I am mad at Seiko for introducing the cyclops in such a perfect design, and then making it white! How I wish they would have left the original alone - it is so timeless and elegant !

This Alpinist with the Compass function is also nice. The gold highlights on the green dial complemented by the rich brown leather strap make it a timeless classic. The cyclops date on the other one is a bit discordant, yes. What they ought to have done is to use the same as original or at the most, maybe a parchment gold silk tone instead of the white which is too stark. But to me, my plain Alpinist with the green dial and steel bracelet is more practical as an EDC (Every Day Carry) watch!

Quite curious they list Tag in Basic Luxury but Omega in Luxury segments respectively whereas both are considered peers globally and are also in similar price brackets across equivalent models.

You have a point on Richard Mille. Perhaps it falls under "Undefinable Luxury" given the price.

Maybe you should ask either Zimson or Ethos Service Centre for help. Its possible that the watch may have to be sent back to Switzerland for the operation and it is likely to cost a pretty penny.
Around 20 odd years ago I had the plexiglass of my grand dad’s Omega Seamaster replaced because it had developed a crack. It was done through Ethos. And it had to go back to its home in Switzerland for that. And it did cost a goodly sum.

Re: Which watch do you own?

Took the courage to splurge on a Grand Seiko SPGE283 - Spring Drive High intensity Titanium with GMT function. The watch looks beautiful and the spring drive movement is perfect. The dial catches lights in different angles and great contrast between the dial and the hands comes thru brilliantly. Comes with 5 year international warranty from purchase date.

The manufacturing date is sometime in June-2024.

Re: Which watch do you own?

Here is my collection: Sorry for the poor picture quality. Could not get to remove the reflections.

1. The one in the middle is the Limited Edition Breitling for Bentley purchased over 15 years back

2. Omega Seamaster Chronograph is over 20 years old and has a peculiar chrono dial arrangement which they discontinued to the one that we see now

3. The Tag Carrera again is perhaps as old or maybe closer to 20 years

4. Tissot in the picture is not an Automatic but a limited edition with "numbered" units marked at the back - again some 15 years old

5. The one on the extreme left used to be my favourite during the peak travel days. This is a Citizen Aviators World Time watch and perhaps more than 20 years old too.

Only pending item is Rolex Sub Date (Black) but given the short-supply and absolutely no connection with the existing dealer network is perhaps difficult to obtain. Each time I remember and call them, I get a standard answer "no supply" and then I forget about if for another year or so.

By the way, I also have a couple of HMT handwound watches which are kept for nostalgia. Purchased them when HMT was closing down and kept them as is in the case. Amazing pieces. Will post the pictures some time.

Good clean collection though you seem to be in need of a nice dress watch to complete it!
1. That Omega Chrono - I might have gotten one of the last pieces left in the market here in India but I found a few years later that it was too big for my wrist hence gave it off in exchange. It was the same design as the one you have pictured.
2. Rolex Sub- you should put your name on the list at the AD. You ll probably get it in 2 years. Else pick up the ‘new-old’ from Dubai or Japan or Hongkong.
3. That Breitling Bentley with the Knurled case was absolutely gorgeous when it came out but I found it a bit too big for my wrist so got a Colt instead. Sadly that got stolen.
4. Your HMT Collection I would just love to see sometime. Pure nostalgia.

This watch collecting is a painful and expensive addiction - almost a ‘borderline vice’, I may say…

Thank you. I will post the pictures of the HMT watches sometime this week.

As far as Rolex is concerned, I have found the local dealers in Bangalore too obtuse to deal with. It is almost like they do not welcome any enquiries. Forget the wait list, even getting them to have a conversation seems like a pain in the posterior. Perhaps they sell within the known group only.

Maybe your suggestion to pick it up abroad is a good one. I have been avoiding it all along to eliminate any Customs hassles.

Faced this time and again. It is a known fact that the Rolex steel sports models are sold only to the so called high end customers etc and not to the general watch enthusiast , and the trend is even more prevalent in India. Ive enquired about the Explorer multiple times only to get the same lackadaisical and disinterested answer from Ethos etc.

Re: Which watch do you own?

Just Got a Vostok Komandirskie - A Neat Bit of Soviet Watch Design

Picked this up recently and discovered something pretty clever about it. The way the hands are mounted has these small gaps - not from poor manufacturing, but actually by design. Here's the cool part: when the watch just sits there, these gaps can make it run a bit off. But wear it around, let it get knocked about a bit, and it actually keeps better time! The regular movement keeps the hands working within those gaps just right.

It's got that typical Vostok "wobble" in the movement too, and like most Russian watches, you can go about 10 years between services. Got it from komanderskie.com, took about 15 days to arrive.

If anyone's curious about getting one, they're still pretty affordable and make for an interesting example of how sometimes what looks like a flaw is actually clever engineering.

Re: Which watch do you own?

Does anyone know of a watch repair shop in Delhi NCR that can repair an automatic Orient that is running erratically after taking a nasty fall? Since there is no Orient present in india anymore I am looking for "FNG" like options for a mechanical watch.
