    - Is there a significant price difference ?
    - What about quality / warranty ?
    - Import Duty / Taxes / Custom Problems ?

I am not 100% sure, but i think a LCD from China will be cheaper even after paying a duty. I got a LCD from Dubai, paid duty and it was still cheaper than what it was retailing for in Mumbai.

99% of the time the warranty will be a regional warranty, i.e warranty will be valid only in China.

I wouldn't worry much about the quality, since most manufacturing of electronic products is outsourced to China.

All electronics, toys should be cheaper in China.

You can look at some Portable HDDs. They might be quite cheaper there, but will not be the known brands.

Since most products from reputed brands in India are made in china, with indian brand name printed on it. you can get all electronics cheap there. get LCD. It will be much cheaper. And dont worry about warranty, for that price you pay there, you can double time use it here.

I have heard horror stories of goods brought from China. If you dont know proper shops, you might as well throw your money down the nearest drain. A friend of mine bought a 4GB pen drive which now holds only 2 files and that too he can't overwrite.
Another guy bought a Rolex which lasted a week.
Made in China is synonmous for cheap but not necessarily for quality.

My friends experiance :

In china u can not make a difference between real and fake. you will get stuff with same packing (including hologram) and various prices and one can not feel the difference. it would be very difficult to distinguish the fake with the real. if u want to buy something "Branded" "reliable" "electronics" in china then buy it from hong kong.

one can route his way back through hongkong and buy the stuff there...

First of all find if your friend has any Chinese speaking local contact or not ?
In china you need to bargain hard just like buying vegetables and things purchased need to be tested then and there itself no warranty , NO guarantee and no online shopping either.

If you go for warranty and hassle free experience then prices will not be too cheap and buying in India would be better.

Everything and anything is available provided you can explain to the shopkeeper.

One word of caution , think twice before buying any transmitting / receiving device or LCDs.
In china non-branded items do no undergo any radiation tests or interference tests so they may be dangerous even if they last forever so look for some harmless things.

My suggestion is forget about big size items ( volume wise) but buy small cheap stuff in multiple numbers.

Like

1. Flash memory drive ( ~ 32 GB or CF to SATA enclosure for multiple of 32GB )
2. USB WiFi dongles.
3. HDD Media player , NAS storage enclosure
4. Speakers , iPod docking stations.
5. Accessories.
6. Fake Perfumes
7. Synthetic material Jackets , Shoes
8. Ladies Hand bags and purse ( Wont you love to gift that french Checkered or LV printed stuff for less then 250 Rs ).
9. Electric Shavers , Personal grooming kits , hair epiliators
10. Radio Controlled or programmed Toys.

Regards

I think you are exempt from paying custom duty till a specific amount of goods. AFAIK, 25k used to be the limit. Anything over it, and you need to pay a duty.

Does the customs department have a website where this info is available? if there is, you might want to check that out.
