Levis- Is it what it used to be?

Has anyone tried Woodland's denims,they seem soft but never bought because of design(like UCB)
i am sticking to Levis, Lee & Puma(really good, but they don't make jeans, the apparels are good though pricey)

The quality was below par in 2007-08 i guess. But its much better now. Try out the new range of SB504 or L504. They rock. And also thier international range of denims, which i guess are available at selected outlets.

I am looking for the very Traditional blue denim jeans. I don't want the thinner version of he denim. I want the denim to be as thick as possible. I *do not* want stone washed, darker shades, lighter shades, faded ones". I don't want pleats. I don't want side pockets. I want the traditional riveted pockets. I don't want baggy fit. I don't want huge flares. I do not want low waist. I do not want fly buttons.

20 years back, I used to buy jeans at those small shops at Heera Panna at Haji Ali. The jeans there used to fit my requirements. Then I went to the US. I used to buy Levis. Then I noticed that Costco's Kirkland Signature Jeans were much cheaper than Levis, but as good a quality.

Then I returned to India & noticed that regular traditional jeans are rather difficult to find. The market is flooded with big flares, wierd colors/washes/embroidery etc.
The jeans which came nearest to satisfying my needs were the Levis 506. It's bottom was around 17". That is slightly bigger than the traditional ones, but still OK.

Now for the last year or so, I have been scouting the malls for Levis 506 but they aren't available anywhere.

So anyone know which other jeans I can look at? My budget is a maximum of what I would pay for Levis 506 - i.e. 1500-1600 or so.

I have checked Lee earlier but couldn't find anything which was 16-17" bottoms.

Any suggestions?

Well, those days are passe. Good quality Levis retails for 2500+ now. Try Zara, its on sale. So a steal. Else push yourself to the stores on Hill road, Bandra for good quality fakes. Not advisable thou.

Lee has the worst collection in India. Try out Wrangler or Pepe.

Any suggestions?

I spent a lot of time today at Shopper's Stop, Killer shop, Spykar shop, Pepe shop & a Levis shop today looking for what I wanted - traditional color & fit has totally disappeared from the market.
The only jeans I liked was a German brand called Mustang in Shopper's stop - sadly the only piece they had in the color, fit & size I wanted had a slight manufacturing fault. They said they would try to get one from one of the other stores if they found it & call me. The cost was around 1800Rs - hopefully they will get one for me soon.
Was traditional blue, traditional fit, 16 inch bottoms, traditional riveted straight pockets, no design, streaks, stripes, embroidery, colours whatever.

Also in the Levis store, I almost liked the fit of the 531, but didn't like the cloth or the colour. So 517 cloth was OK (not as good as the old 506 or the Mustang one) but the fit wasn't what I wanted. They said they'll alter the 517 to reduce it's bottom - so bought one - cost 900Rs after a 50% sale markdown.

Somehow I felt that my favourite 501 cloth feels a lot thinner than it used to be. The brass rivets also felt as if have gone in for a diet. They have a slightly tinny feeling than the 501 of the yester years.

The place where the loop is stitched to the pants (over the back pockets) tore on 1st wash. I went back to the shop and got a refund after a fight with the shopkeeper.

Levi's used to be a working man's clothes - clothes used during farming, manual labour, cowboys etc. Now it seems to be thin cloth for yuppies.

havent owned a pair of Levis since i was a kid. Now all my jeans are from brands back in the US (CK, Aeropostale, Holister, Express, etc). I pick them up whenever i go home

. I want to get Lucky Brand, but they are wayyy too expensive.

I agree - the stuff in India is $hit.

I bought a pair of thrown away original Tommy Hilfiger cutoffs for Rs.150 and to this day it is the best fitting pair I've ever worn.

I've tried most other brands, and though Pepe is good, its quality has gone down too.

Arvind mills is not a good partner.

i refuse to buy ANY jeans in india unless its from some place like Tommy (even i dont like their jeans now) or CK or FCUK. My FCUK jeans i got in Mumbai are pretty good

Where are they available in Bombay? How is GAS and GAP? I believe GAS is available in Calcutta at South City, I saw it once IIRC.

I bought a few Levi's from Bangalore a few years back (from Forum Mall I guess), and the quality was quite bad. It lost shape very fast, and soon was given away.
But last year I picked up 2 from Cochin, and surprisingly it was very comfortable and holding up pretty well.

Somehow I felt that my favourite 501 cloth feels a lot thinner than it used to be. The brass rivets also felt as if have gone in for a diet.
