The Hindu news content is far superior to ToI. The way I see it, if I want to know what's going on and don't have time to sit and read, then I'll scan through ToI. But if I want something of value to read, then there is only Hindu for me.

Stopped TOI long back. With kids at home, it is like subscribing to Debonair. Hindu, Deccan are much better bets.

Dear All,
Sorry guys I differ-been all over the Country-read papers from Arunachal to Punjab, J&K to Bangalore-the content, english and photography variation is miniscule between each of the big names-DH,DC, TOI, Amrita Bazaar,DNA. All carry the same news some cover them slightly better. I love the "Speaking Tree and editorial of the TOI.
I do not know about the revealing pics as mentioned by some of you-though from the same town I must be getting a different edition or though older I must be perceiving things in a broader perspective??
Regards,
Col J H Mayne

I have never had the inclination to read TOI regularly even when I was in Bangalore, though the Bangalore edition of Hindu did not have enough local news. While at Chennai my morning is incomplete without Hindu.

I started reading TOI after I moved to Bangalore, but soon found out that the paper rides on sensationalism and they don’t give importance to real news any more - the tipping point for me was the day when Benazir Bhutto died - on that day, instead of that news, Times carried a full page advertisement. Stopped TOI on that day and shifted to Hindu - they are much better.

Yes NIE is still in schools & here in Navi Mumbai, school management try to force its subscription on all students.

Excellent thread. Just when I was thinking if it was only ME who felt that TOI is crap, I have lots of readers already expressing their ire on this newspaper (err.....Tabliod).

I grew up with Deccan Herald and The Hindu and I must admit that these 2 newspapers are still living on Journalistic ethics rather than trying to sell in big numbers with skimpily clad pictures on the front page. Forget the front page, even the Health and Sports sections have semi nude pictures these days in TOI.

I still remember when TOI BLR published news about Hritik Roshan getting married in a resort in Bangalore on a front page and I was like.

Remember folks? While in school we were made to read out the headlines in the assembly after the prayers (this happened in my school) and I am glad that our School subscribed to DH and The Hindu. I still cannot imagine reading out an explicit/utterly useless headline of TOI.

One more thing I have found with TOI is that they always want to fool the readers by playing the 'My city' card where they go beyond limits to prove that how their City is always the best. For reader who is affectionately related to his city, It emotionally blackmails the reader and makes him feel that his is the best city than the rest are useless! This actually is one of the reasons why people develop a "Frog in a well" Syndrome and always get defensive while accepting certain truths about how certain things are indeed better in other cities.

Read two editions of TOI On a single day from different cities and I have personally found Bangalore edition full of gossip and hopeless articles.

If sense prevails amongst the readers that their kids too read the newspaper, there is no doubt its not TOI in any case.

TOI: Timepass Of India Not for the real news.

The Property Times simply boasts Bangalore saying all roads are being widened, new IT hubs being planned, all are heading to North Bangalore etc. This news is correct but the way its exaggerated, sounds very artificial.

Not to forget "Life and Style" section of Online TOI.
Everyday and each day the only thing discussed there is S**.

Thats Life and Style as per TOI.

OT: If I remember correctly once in 80's Hindu once recalled a flight of Newsprints after India won cricket match somewhere. The newpaper were printed again with the results and sent out for distrubution. Thats the high standard of The Hindu.
I will try to dig out the details and post.

TOI has lots of crap and thrives on sensationalism of any kind.
Just look at today's Nagpur edition. The front page headline is about a girl student who was ragged dirty by seniors.
Nagpur News, Nagpur City News | Cities News - Times of India
I guess a majority of readers either dislike such news and keep quiet or alternately like such stuff. Thats why it sells. It has editions from 29 cities and is growing.
The paper used to rely on advertisements and pampered advertisers in the 1980's, 1990's and even till 2005.News and articles were relegated to second place after advertisements.
Now about 5 years back since 2005,they realised the power of soft porn to sell papers apart from advertisements. So the mantra is use soft porn, sell more copies, then jack up the advertisement rates showing advertisers the circulation figures and alluring them.

I have long stopped TOI and gone for HINDU. just that the news in TOI is not at all something that amuses me or of any real concern. It looks more like they are interested in sensational and eye-catching news than actual news that concerns the public!!
