IIRC, the headline said something about Yuvraj scoring both on and off the field. Made me want to hurl.
I had canceled my morning paper for a couple of months once but had to go back on that decision when I ran out of old newspaper to wipe my windscreen.

@Thad: About aping America, I was talking in general. The Indian entertainment business is just one part of it. However it has a tremendous influence on people's minds.

ps: I'm not that good at writing & that could be the reason why you thought that way.

If old newspapers serve as wipes for windscreens, the 3rd & 8th pages of the entertaiment supplements can surely serve as toilet paper.
That's the best use we can put them to.
But the downside in case of our newspapers is, the ink comes off. lol

Just came across this quote and had to acknowledge how true, while still hilarious. And yet, we get upset if the morning paper delivery is delayed by even 15 minutes!

Dad used to always read The Hindu - even when we were in Nigeria, he used to get some edition that they would send to him once a week by post. So it continued for me and still read only The Hindu.

I cannot stomach the "news" in the (T)oilet-paper (O)f (I)ndia. Its a rag.

One gets used to the paper one has grown up on, I guess and it is difficult to shut down the rag!
Having read the Hindu on occasions, I agree that it is in another league altogether. Very in depth, and very cultured. Two points though - I think they also visibly grind an editorial axe, and I am not sure I can cope with the heavy content on a daily basis!
As I said, it is a matter of habit - TOI in many ways has become a rag, but its my rag

TOI online editions are bad. I think twice before opening them in office. The front page of the TimesOfIndia website are sometimes embarrassing.

Actually it is a soft porn. Todays edition though just had a pic of eva longoria(toi never misses her appointment with a nba match)(does she really dress like that to a match?!?!?).
But it looks like toi is listening to this thread. A all those semi-n pics are slowly moving to mirror.

But does that help when Bangalore Mirror is supplied free with ToI? Does the reader have a choice really?

I think there should exist some kind of censorship board on print media.
If anyone is aware of the details - can't we report the indecent content to some authority ?

I am surprised why some people are so bothered by seeing the human form, the way nature intended it. Well, almost

TOI brightens up my morning
The Hindu brings me back to reality.

To be honest the Indian Express seems to be a decent compromise between TOI and the Hindu. That said, in our house The Hindu is the de-facto paper. On some stray seasons we subscribe to the TOI aswell.

Me too.

OK, we can talk about exploitation of women... that's a different thing completely... but as for cries for censorship? I'd like to know what harm it does! Anyway, the battle is long-since lost: there is the internet!

Gentleman these battle cries of censorship in democracy is not a healthy sighn.
AFAI understand majority of news papers in India including Hindu and TOI are already self censored whenever it comes to topics such as chopping of hand of a college lecturer in Kerala by fundamentalists or the way NHAI contracts are bagged by a prominent son of the soil in TamilNadu and various other scams in various states.

I do not mind the physical nudity in newspaper but moral nudity of the kind mentioned above is the real problem for me.

OT: did any of you visit the temple in Bhatkal and saw the murals on the wall or even the engravings in the outer peripheral of Padmnabham temple in Thiruananthpuram ? Surely asking for censorship is not our culture but a cultural element of our western and northwestern neighbors.

Not almost, you hit the nail on the head. Irresponsible commercial journalism is one among the major issues faced by people the world over. Be it the Indian, British, American or any other press. Or may I say media in general.
The thing is some observant Indians(we) are resistant to the so called change which is of no good to society.
