Re: Fake / Fraud / Scam Calls

Don’t know if this qualifies as an official fraud. Recharged for 84 days on my mothers number and Airtel only granted 77 day’s validity.

Upon googling I can see many Reddit and Twitter posts that Airtel is now engaged in this loot and there is no recourse from Airtel support who just say 84 days is for specific numbers and your number isn’t eligible. This when I’ve been doing the same recharge for quite some time and always gotten 84 days!

Re: Fake / Fraud / Scam Calls

Today morning I got an automated call from someone claiming to be income tax department. The message said “ this is the income tax department. Today we will do mandatory deduction from your account. To know more and talk to the officer press 9”. The message repeated in Hindi and English. I pressed the end call button.
Have anyone experienced something like this? Is this something new?

Sir, the fraudsters/ scamsters continuosly create newer methods to scam the public.

As a general thumb rule, any phone call / message purported to be from Income Tax, Narcotics dept, Customs Dept is to neglected and discarded.

If you are already having any business with these department like income tax related matters / import export related matters with customs, then it's advisable to reach out to them personally / physically at their office or atleast use their official portal to reach out to them.

The local police station might call you with relation to some local matters. It's quite possible. In such a case, again a personal visit to the local police station is advised to sort out the issue.

FedEx, BlueDart, MDMA, TRAI, phone number blocking, bank account blocking, expired insurance policy renewal etc are all mostly fraudulent calls. Just hang up the call, block the number and delete the number. It's not worth wasting your valuable time on these frivolous calls/messages unless you have lot of free time on your hand and play along if you want to just have some fun. Also do report such numbers to the cyber crime department.

Never ever disclose any personal information on phone to anyone.
Never submit any personal information/docs to any one on WhatsApp or Telegram.
Never ever click any links unless you know for sure. Unknown person's links just delete and block the number.

Always visit the department/office/ Bank if you are in doubt.

Recently my primary SIM on my mobile stopped working. I didn't call some random number taken from Google to seek help from the service provider. Instead, I went to the nearest office of the service provider and got the SIM replaced (as it had become corrupt). I also blocked all SMS/OTP generation during that period with a request to the service provider. My connection was restored after 24 hours after the new SIM was inserted in the mobile phone and I resumed normal transactions thereafter.

Just ignore - Block - delete all these purported department calls. If it's serious, they will come and knock your door, else it's probably a fraudster/scamster in operation..

Re: Fake / Fraud / Scam Calls

Yesterday I received a fraud call from the no. +917061597153 from someone pretending to be a xxxx bank representative. He spoke in my mother-tongue, but had a very strong accent, suggesting a non-native speaker. Here is a transcript of the call (translated):

---------------------------

Caller: Is xxxx speaking?

Me: Yes, speaking.

Caller: The call is from xxx Bank ...

Me: Yes, go on ...

Caller: Last week the Bank sent you a message: "PAN Summary Update" is going on. May I know why it was not done?

Me: What update?!

Caller: "PAN card Update Verification" is going on.

Me: I didn't receive any such message! And how frequently does one have to update? My Full KYC was done only 3 years back.

Caller: 3 years passed and no updates were done in your account! That's why you were sent a message last week.

Me: I did NOT receive any such message!

Caller: Then you must not have "followed" your messages!

Me: No, I read all messages. I did not receive any such thing!

Caller: OK, no problem. So you do want to do the "PAN Summary Update" in order to keep your account active, right?

Me: Yes, of course I want to keep my account active! What a question!

Caller: Then "PAN Summary Update" is being done from here itself. Please have your PAN card in hand. What is your Birth Date printed on it?

Me: I will NOT give it on phone like this! I'll give it to my BM directly.

Caller: OK, then charges of 7xxx/- will be deducted from your account.

Me: Why is it being deducted?!

Caller: It is "PAN Summary Update Verification charges".

Me: So you are making a fraud call! I will report you ...

Caller: How will you report? What fraud call was made to you?

-- I then terminated the call.

---------------------------

Then I called my BM immediately, and he confirmed that it was a fraud call, and I did the right thing by not divulging anything. For any re-KYC, the Bank will always ask the customer to visit the branch, and it won't be done like this over phone. However, he declined to do anything with the originating phone number, and advised me to report it directly to the police!

Is there any mechanism where such numbers can be reported and something would be actually done about it?

Re: Fake / Fraud / Scam Calls

In spite of all these awareness, it keeps happening again and again.

https://www.rediff.com/news/report/b...m/20241223.htm

Quote:
A 39-year-old software engineer became a victim to a "digital arrest" scam and lost Rs 11.8 crore when fraudsters impersonating police officials claimed that his Aadhaar card was being misused to open bank accounts for money laundering, police said on Monday.
This seems crazy at multiple levels.
Firstly, this is a young educated Engineer. Its not the usual senior citizen.
Secondly, this guy transfers 12 crores before realizing its a scam?
Thirdly, which company employs engineers with such IQ and pays him so high to accumulate 12 Crores.

Re: Fake / Fraud / Scam Calls

Recently I received a call from an international unknown number that I didn’t pick, and while it went to voicemail I could see the transcription saying something like “all accounts linked to your number will be blocked….”.

Few days later, received another call today, this time from Oman saying my phone will be disconnected!

It was a message in Hindi and the word dabayen has been transcribed as Dubai

I had the exact same question in my mind. Would be a great place to work if a young engineer had saved up this much so quickly

Re: Fake / Fraud / Scam Calls

Having a lot of time on my hands, I have started a new strategy dealing with scammers.
I ask them politely as to why they took to a life of crime? I ask them if their parents would be proud of what they are doing? Do they go to pray and if so what do you think your god will be thinking about you? Who will get food and essentials for you when you are in jail?
I then ask them to send me their bio-data and I will sincerely try to get an honest job for them.
The responses are of 3 types

1) They just put the phone down. (Smartest).
2) They curse a lot and then put the phone down. (Slightly lower in smartness)
3) The most pitiful of the lot who keep on telling about they are not cheats and are actually Fedex or telecom department customer care.

I feel really sorry for category 3) but think I am doing my civic duty in terms of engaging them and preventing them from scamming someone else.
Who knows ? Maybe some in category 3) might really turn honest in which case my effort would be rewarded.

The saddest lot of them all are the ones who are forced to scam people. Innocent people who have been tricked by job offers in SE Asia and end up in pig farm scam centers.

People who willingly do this stuff to make a quick buck, they are scum.
