Happens sometimes...however it is quite common on my RD, which is as revv happy in 6th as it is in 1st. Usually have to nudge the lever down a bit to check if there is one more gear left....

In the Jeep - because of its terribly low gearing, it is impossible to not be aware of what gear you are in.

Use to happen to me when I was learning
if you use same car for longer time you get used to noise of engine
as my car doesn't have tacho, I can figure out gear by listening to engine noise & looking at speed
but Can get confused if I am in completely new car

P.S. when it comes to two wheelers I keep reminding myself about gear every five minutes

This used to happen for me when I was learning to drive on a Premier Padmini with the steering column mounted gear lever. Has also happenned a couple of times for me when I forgot I was driving a manual after having driven an automatic for around 6 years :-). In more recent times the tach and the engine noises + the gear lever position are indicators enough.

Only happens if I am driving with my mind wondering somewhere else!
Once in my 800 i forgot that I was in 3rd gear (thought I was in 1st) and casually put 2nd..... LOL... that was some engine braking (breaking!).

Till date it has not happened with me in car but yeah in bike.
When i drive friends Passion I sometime search for 5th gear but its not there or sometimes I think im in 1st but turns out to be 2nd, the pick up is so slow then it is confirmed that i was indeed in 2nd.

gear woes

yes, has happened to me sometimes generally in the higher gears.

now, my cars have tiptronic / shiftronic transmissions. sometimes when i'm driving in the "manual" mode, i forget to upshift from 1 after stopping at a traffic light - takes a while after which my tubelight lights up!

a while ago i drove a cousin's VW Jetta with a manual transmission. i was driving a manual transmission after 2 years straight. he lives in Denver, Colorado where the roads are generally straight and go on forever and ever.

what happens is that after shifting up to top gear, one ends up driving in the same gear for a while and during one such trip, i happily forgot that i'm driving a manual - so when we had to stop i forgot the phenomenon called "press clutch to change gear" and come to a stop via the brake alone - forgetting the clutch pedal exists.

got a bonk on the head, from cousin ofcourse and a big L sign on the forehead.

Happens to me too when I'm in the 5th gear, sometime i'm not too sure of it. I just press the clutch and get to neutral and put it back in 5th and ride on.....

By touching the gear knob, I will know whether it is 4th or 5th. But some times I stop at signals, forget to change it to 1st and try starting in the 3rd or 2nd ! Very bad!!
