re: Son pushes gifted BMW gifted by dad into river. Reason? He wanted a Jaguar!

This kid deserves some counselling, gainful employment and a bus pass !

In lighter vein, if I was Jaguar India marketing...

"Save the environment and just choose the jaaaaag"
"Bad boys always want a Jag"
"Cats don't like water"

Nothing of the moral stuff discussed here is going to happen, his parents will get him cleared of all the legal hassles and get him his Jaguar. I hope my opinion is proven wrong but I strongly doubt it.

This is really bad PR for BMW and good one for Jaguar.
This whole episode already got an international media attention.

On a positive note, this incident sure helps little bit in changing foreigners' perception of India like "very poor country, no toilets in India, all people poop in open etc".

I'd like to know more before blaming the parents. Gifting a bmw is no sin. If you have the moolah, it's your choice how and where you want to spend it. However, with respect to the son, the guy is really sick. I heard that no case has been registered as the guy cooked up a story saying that he lost control of the car while trying to avert a 'Neelgai' that suddenly came in front of the car and ended up in the river. Ominous signs as now no legal measures/actions can be taken to bring him back on track.
Someone on the forum suggested community service, I am completely in favor.

This reminds me of a friend who had almost thrown away his Tissot because he wanted an Omega from his parents. I waited beneath his window for a few days hoping to catch the Tissot, but unfortunately good sense prevailed and he kept the watch

Makes me smile wryly. My father taught me driving at an age I dare not mention, but didn't allow me to drive anywhere but on that one deserted dead-end road inside Aarey Colony (with bad potholes to boot) at low speeds till I was really good at handling the car. I had to wait till I was 22 before I got "my own" car. It was a 6-year old Esteem that I had to pay my father for (his car) with money I was earning. very nominal sum of course, but it taught me valuable lessons.

I do the same (or try to) with my son now. Poor lad (all of 5) actually asks to "buy me a toy BMW when you have the money" and promises good behaviour etc. as well. I don't agree with the "if you have the moolah..." argument. Children - sorry, all humans, need to learn value and of course, have values. As a parent, that's pretty much your one responsibility after ensuring safety and health!

Reminds me of the following quote:

The community may preferably be as small as just his parents only

With real estate boom accompanied by easy land money there are thousands of spoiled brats across Pune, Gurgaon, Noida. If not BMW you can't recognize millions lurking out of bank accounts by mere physical appearance (non taxable income). Many roam around with back number plates displaying caste then RTO prescribed alphanumeric. And to top it most of these want reservations under SC/ ST/ OBCs.

Pardon me for being socially philosophical but problem arise from poor state of women in the houses. Manners and values are best taught by the fairer sex though unfortunately same is undermined and disrespected.

This is just pathetic. In our country where millions suffer on a daily hand to mouth existence, there are guys like these who are so oblivious to the difficulties in life.
I hope the authorities make him pay for his dastardly act. This shows his upbringing at home where only money talks. I feel genuinely sorry for that BMW!

The word you probably meant to use is moolah, a synonym for money. Mullah is an Islamic cleric or scholar.

Yup. I am aware. I was typing on the mobile and I accepted an auto suggestion. Later while revisiting my post spotted the typo but didn't find an edit option.

On a related note, I truly believe that there's no wrong in buying your kid a bmw. It's completely a personal decision. There's no need to give parenting classes in that regard and taking a high moral stand. However, what the kid did with that BMW is unacceptable and should be discussed and debated.

Looks like he is the kind of person who has very high regard for Jaguar, the kind who would get offended by anything less. Like this guy who got pranked.
