As per the woman, who was caught with the forged registration number...The woman owner’s name is withheld but the cops have revealed that she is a director in a private firm.

So the woman has confessed but still her identity is being protected?

An MParivahan search shows the number "MH01DK1110" to be of a BMW 530d and registered in 2019 which actually matches the description of the car above so as seedyk said, this car might indeed be registered as 1110 with the 0 omitted at the end.

Maybe the lady just wanted a special "VIP" number but didn't have the fortune to win the bid or something else is anybody's guess

So a 0111 belongs to Ratan Tata and 1110 belongs to this lady I would give her benefit of doubt for being on the stupid side. Would have done the same if it was a Gentleman too

An educated search revealed the name of the company and the director also.

Privacy is a myth in this connected world.

Just that or they never claim insurance at all. Remember, they save from the NCB too. And these buses, belonging to big travel companies, are never stopped for any routine checking as well.

Apart 'Numerology' aspect of choosing numbers, there is 'Macho' aspect as well - Have you ever noticed '8055' displayed as 'BOSS'? , everything else on the number plate will font size 10 and only 'BOSS' in font size 100.

Hope the mandatory HSRP would solve these display inconsistencies too.

Some years back my friend boarded a bus (renowned travel company) from Mumbai. On the way out, the bus stopped at their regular spot near Panvel. A rookie traffic cop noticed a similar bus, belonging to the same company parked right next to this one, sporting the same number plate !!
Needless to say, further journey was delayed by a few hours, as the bus drivers and the cop got "better acquainted" with each other.

All ye pointing out the system issue of non-validation of the car type against the registration, even Jason Bourne had shown how cars number plate can be easily changed without the folks in power realizing the gap in their tracking systems

I am wondering what's the timeline before Mumbai police started looking into this matter and figured out the vehicle in question. I'm assuming somebody from the Tata stable made enough complaints/noise for the government to eventually pick it up. But do they do it diligently for every such reported case?

There was a case years ago when a Bangalore based bus operator had used same registration number for multiple buses to save taxes.

I guess this practice is done by many and goes unnoticed for the most time.

Number plate scanning, hsrp and automated toll collection systems should help curb them in near future.

In that topic I see that HSRP is available in very few states as of now.

No I don't think it is HSRP. It has a blue left border. This is not how HSRP looks.

On the other hand, if omitting zeros on the right was this easy, my life would be great.

I don't understand why people would do such a thing and give such lame excuses.
