The one that pulled awfully WAS a customer car, 1.6 SXI ABS.

The one after was a 1.6 ABS that had 40+ thousand on odo, with scratches and dents. That one drove well.

After that he offered me (once again a new) 1.4ZXI, but I wasn't interested (and didn't have time either).

An Auto enthu (ignorant of TBHP , but now he knows ) speculated that there may be a low speed sensor that regulated throttle to avoid engine choking. In the TD car, that might have been disconnected by mistake.
