1. Someone else is using your car number. If this occurs again or you get traffic challans, you can be sure that this is a high likelihood scenario.

2. Error in car number input for manual deduction.

Thankyou, Point 2 is probably the potential scenario

I checked for point 1, but parivahan wasn’t showing any challan

The Fastag sure is a dicey technology to use. The best solution would be to link the Fastag with an account other than your primary bank account, or a third party wallet (Paytm etc) & to recharge/transfer money to it only before travelling.

Paytm wallet doesn't have a provision for security deposit of around 200₹ and hence will display insufficient balance.

I can’t remember now, its been some time since I have closed that tag. It was pretty unreliable for me at that time.

I faced a similar issue a few months back. Was at home, when I got an SMS about PayTM fastag deduction from a toll plaza several hundreds of kilometres away from my place.

I raised a complaint on Paytm app, and also took a picture (with GPS coordinates) of my car parked at home for proof.
For the complaint, I was asked to send the fastag number, and a picture of the fastag with the number clearly visible.

The complaint was updated in 2 hours saying that it has been forwarded to the toll plaza who would check with the CCTV footage and it would take upto 10 days and the toll plaza has to respond within that time as per government guidelines.

I had then forgotten about it, but got a message after 14 days that the incorrect deduction was reversed.

I think the issue is not exactly a fastag issue but more of a data entry issue by fastag operators who incorrectly enter the vehicle number in case fastag isn't read properly. Recently, they have added the functionality to use the vehicle number for fastag deduction in case the fastag reader didn't work in the first attempt. Some vehicle with a number closely matching to yours might have gone, and operator might have put yours by mistake.
While the issue did happen, I am happy with the SMS alerts and trouble free refund system by the provider.

Attaching screenshots of the response from customer care:

I have faced this earlier and quite a co-incidence that mine was also an ICICI Fastag. I stopped charging it, and then closed that fast tag.
I believe this is somehow related to ICICI not having appropriate measures of check for duplicate transactions.

Coincidentally, I got a message today morning that my fast tag is deducted for 77. I called up the customer care number give in the message and got the same response (that it will be investigated and that i will get a response within 25 days).

This is the second time it happened to me, first time was 6 months back for Rs 40 and the amount was refunded in 2 months, although the amounts are small, I feel there is some fraud happening.

I also think so. It may be a bigger fraud than expected. Once may be just happened or human error or whatever but can’t be second time! We found the issue so we went back. There may be many such instances which would have gone unnoticed. Man!:Frustrati

Happened the same thing to me in January this year, without the car moving Rs. 50 were deducted from my wallet, my car was parked at home in Jaipur and I work in Pune, my father can't drive the car and got a notification for the money deduction in Uttar Pradesh.

Tried to take the issue with Paytm but their customer service is very difficult, plus they needed a lot of pictures and documents which I didn't had with me so had to let go.

Today morning I received SMS from Paytm, that my car crossed Attibele tolll plaze yesterday. I am out of Bangalore and my car is parked at my apartment parking in Bangalore. Initially I panicked and thought that car is stolen. So I asked my apartment security to check the car. Luckily car is safe.

I attempted to raise the complaint on Paytm. But they need some number on Fastag. I will file the complaint when I am back in BLR.

Call 1033 and raise the issue directly. Paytm will also ask the same

Does any of the Fastag providing bank allow temporarily blocking the tag when I am not using it, so we can keep it disabled when using in city and enable it back only during outstation travels? That way we can minimize these wrong deductions.
I checked Paytm apps from where I got my Fastag, but didn't find any such option. If any other provider allows this, I would like to switch.

I checked with icici my fastag provider. They have no such facility and i doubt whether that facility is available at all.

Same story here too in May this year. Was charged twice on the same toll booth A with a time difference of approx 1hr. Funny thing is the second charge of toll booth A was only 10-15 minutes prior to another charge at toll booth B which was more than 90kms away from toll booth A on my onward journey.

I too was asked for all those ridiculous details like OP said for refund.

I think this scenario is not rare at all and I also think there's another thread/discussion on the same topic.

Had a similar episode where after a month of doing a Bangalore - Pondy trip had a deduction at the neelamangala toll( my car was in Mangalore). Of course the first reaction was to call some one in the building where i park to check if the vehicle was there. Was quite an ordeal to recover the money, the axis tag agent even telling me that may be the tag was for a wrong type of vehicle( I have a v-cross). After sending images of the vehicle from all sides, RC copy ( all pics 40-50mb size only) took them 3 odd weeks to refund
The second time that it happened maybe a year or a little later, the deduction was quite an amount- maybe around 180 or so. This time although there was no toll both location mentioned. It only said " amount deducted at toll booth- rs 180." The customer service guy also could not tell me at which toll booth it happened. This was the only instance where I felt it could have been a random deduction doing rounds as many would not bother for a refund. Took them around 3 weeks to refund the money.

With this and other experiences shared by folks in the forum, I have a feeling that there seems to be a silent scam going on in the background where the money is deducted in the pretext of manual entry mistake or technical glitch or something weird which is easy to make the commuters believe. They are also aware (have a advantage) that +90% of the people will ignore mail or SMS and even if so, will avoid reaching out due to the hassles of getting it back!

NHAI - if you happen to read, you need to check what is happening at your end:mad:
