But we know Pondicherry has been a tourist place and millions go there.

While anyone can visit and live in any state, i think it is also necessary to respect the natives and the language. I have personally seen people getting into a bakery and speaking in their native to the shopkeeper who doesnt even know that language. I guess it's only in Bangalore that all this works, not in other states. So, i guess that respect is give and take wherever we go and live.
I am a Kannadiga and I will say your thoughts are highly regressive.
A person knowing a language or not - has nothing to do with respect.
And ofcourse has nothing to do with hatred and violence. Towards anyone. Period. And by your words you have basically supported a bunch of goons who dont respect women.

You do realize Kannada is mandatory now in schools and within 10 years or so, pretty much majority would read and write kannada. Irrespective of their mother tongue.

To the OP: Sometimes I really wish, we all lived in Texas. You know - with the second amendment and all.

Re: A violence and vandalism encounter in Bangalore

Having been associated with Bangalore for more than 30 years with 20+ as an employer let me say that the ROOT OF THE PROBLEM is neither drunken behaviour, racism, goons nor the usual suspects - politics and religion.

It is far more deep rooted than any of that and cannot be disclosed in an open forum.

Is there a solution? Or at least direction towards it

Re: A violence and vandalism encounter in Bangalore

I am a proud Kannadiga. Have read literature of Kuvempu, Bendre, Ananta murthy,Tejaswi and many translations of Leo Tolstoy etc.

I suggest mods to close this thread as it will lead to unnecessary opinions based on each induviduals viewpoint. Things can not be generalised by just one or two incidents. It's a big city. Has amazing weather - unlike many major metros with flooding & extreme temperatures, safe(for women after 7pm), ample job opportunities etc. It's like a two sides of a coin. Every place has different types of people. So let's move on.

Just imagine talking to shop owner or auto/cab people in kannada in any other state and expecting to get service in return. 15 yrs back, in an office elevator, I remember few non kannada colleagues commenting on how dirty Bengaluru is. Then I asked them where they stay. Theybsaid some where near bommanahalli or GB palya. Obviously those were densely populated with mostly low income people then. I told them to shift to Jayanagar and see what they feel about the city. So you can bot generalise by a small sample set of data.

In any place - good or bad, I prefer not to venture out with family post 11pm. Once at around 1am, me and my wife were on my bike going back to our place in jayanagar from JP nagar. Near puttenahalli lake, a bike rider came on wrong side to provoke me for no reason. I stared at him. He turned back and started to pick a fight. His friends also joined him on 2 or 3 more bikes. I kept staring at him. Then his friends realized there is a lady sitting behind and told him not to trouble and asked me to go.may be their MO is to start a fight and loot people. Since lady was there, they didn't wanted to take risk. But I do know people in police, so I was least bothered about them.

So kannadiga or outsider, all face similar issues. It's how we take them that mattes. Also I have wonderful memories of Chennai as to how saravana Bhavana hotel staff treated our family when our toddler puked on the floor. They just made sure we were not embarrassed and got it cleaned without even a smirk on their face. They didn't even accept the 100 rs tip I was giving the cleaning lady.

I can go on and on. But the point is to 'move on'. We have better things to do.

This exact 'use and throw' attitude festers locals vs outsiders feelings in the first place. Can't we follow simple principals of community living?
- Were you care about your neighbor just like you care about yourself/ your home.
- Were you follow your personal principal of 'Tit for Tat' by doing good deeds for each one you receive.
- Were you ask yourself what have you done for the people around you for them to treat you better and not as an equal!

Maybe its too easy to blame society for us to continue to justify living our unsympathetic lives.
It seems you are very upset about what I said. Next time someone hurls abuses at me, questions my origins, threatens to physically harm me, I will definitely tell them dont do it, else mac187 doesnt like it when I post my experience on a public forum.

Also read my last line on mutual respect.

You know why this is an issue? Because such behaviour by locals is predictable. Even if not drunk, auto guys, shopkeepers, cabbies, and many white collar folks are quick to raise their voice and ‘show us non-kannadigas’ our place.

My colleague boasted his strategy to deal with cops if caught, he said I say - ‘go catch the northies, im kannadiga’

That reminds me, I need to report him for this.

Similar kind of experience. Back in 2005, within 1 month of coming in Bangalore my MH registered motorcycle was caught by police at Majestic outside City Railway Station. Cash fined as well. I was scared after that and promptly paid the State Tax going to an RTO.
Strangely never got stopped after that though number plate was still same. With 2 wheeler however I avoided the central areas. My rides were limited to Jayanagar area or the occasional longer drive on ORR to Marathali area.

One thing I observed and was also confirmed to me by a cab driver that traffic police never used to catch 4 wheelers with Out Of State numbers back then. Maybe they got instructions from above. Two wheelers were the easy target.

Disclaimer : Just narrating an experience, I'm not complaining. I had a great time at Bangalore during my stay from 2005-2010.
