i have seen a feW and even been driven in one in dubai, cant say much as i didnt drive it myself but seemed to have sporty pretensions as a hathcback and was reasonably spacious.

it was a black b 180 and even had paddle shifts.

the bright red mercedes that stands outside Golf Links is an old A class and is not a counsulate car.

What a coincidence (just saw this thread).

I saw my very first B-class today in London, and thought --- I wish I could get that in India!

I always liked the A Class. At one time there was a rental company that did a big leasing deal with Mercedes (Stelios's Orange group) and they had an online-booking-only chain of places giving these cars out. Could be really cheap if you booked a long way in advance, like less costly than running your own car!

I once suceeded in getting an A190. Auto Transmission, with cruise control. All you had to do was wake up occasionally and check you were on the right road

A small car with a big engine is a winner for me: as is a small car that is fitted out like an expensive one.

The A-Class was not really luxury inside, and was (in those days, I'm going back a few years) just not built to Mercedes standards. Seemed to be a lot of cars with loose bits!

Just caught a glimpse of that B-class, but it looked like a nicer design than the A, less of an upright box.

Would seriously consider if I had the money and the car was available --- but then, I couldn't afford my own A class before retirement, so I guess its going to still be a swift outside the house....

I'd bet that that B-Class was owned/driven by a low-level staffer of a western European embassy; most likely the German/Swiss/French (in that order) embassy.
Does not quite feel like a Merc. More like a souped up VW/ Citroen/ Peugeot. I thought the A-class did a better job with that (small + looking like a Merc).

...maybe a South European embassy.

And Mercedes would have come a long way from the 'fifties when Daimler Benz AktieGesellschaft didn't make low classes.

At the other extreme would be a front wheel drive economy hatchback from Sindelfingen, designed to look like it came from Japan or other oriental countries.
