Intermot 2018: Suzuki to revive the iconic Katana nameplate with a brand new launch

Suzuki has been teasing the revival of their iconic Katana nameplate, and the latest teaser confirms that the unveil will happen on 2nd October at the Intermot show 2018.

Katana 3.0 Concept was revealed last year at EICMA, but it wasn’t an official Suzuki design. Instead, it was commissioned by Italian publication Motociclismo based on the GSX-S1000. However, the teaser does reveal a similar tank design. Looks to be a modern iteration of the original Hans Muth design.

Suzuki also claims that a 'completely new category and brand new bike will be born' which has made some reports suggest that the new Katana might be a supercharged motorcycle.

Some nostalgia -

Looks like Team Bhp had a couple of Katana ownership reports in the last decade, though not of the original GS1100S

I am looking forward to this. Somehow , I have a feeling this would be an edgier, leaner more performance oriented bike compared to the original. The 1980 GSX11S being a personal favorite.
I love big cc streetfighters that are not cruisers and are devoid of chrome and un- necessary-iron, the reason I loved the B king when it was launched back in 07.

The bike looks so much like the "Katana 3.0 Concept by Motociclismo"

This is the edgier retro cool version of the GSX-S1000, the bike it is based on. Considering the GSX-S1000 is a more than decent package to start with this should be fun to ride.
The engine I believe is the re worked 150 bhp motor from K5 Gixxer. Has a very small 12 lt fuel tank though. The styling does look like a homage to the original while still looking fresh. Lets see how this shapes up.

Re: Intermot 2018: Suzuki to revive the iconic Katana nameplate with a brand new launch

For those who want to read about the original - here is an interesting read of a rebuilt Katana.

But the original Katana was to be the fastest mass production bike is what i read - kind of a drag strip queen. The new one seems to have acquired more of a street credential.

I like retro to remain retro so i some how feel the essence of the original has barely remained. The original Katana still looks gorgeous and i know someone in Pune who has one!

Indian Motorcycles have launched the 2019 FTR and FTR 1200S at Intermot 2018. The bikes come with a 1203 cc, 60 degree V-twin magnesium engines. The Indian (as in our country) website has also been updated with the same info. Link

Re: Intermot 2018: Suzuki to revive the iconic Katana nameplate with a brand new launch

At the EICMA show in Milan, the Black variant of the model was unwrapped.

Quote:
For use in the Katana, the engine has been heavily updated, now being capable of developing 150 ps at 10,000 rpm, and a peak torque of 108Nm at 9,500rpm.

The bike comes with three-mode traction control, ABS, inverted front forks, Brembo radial-mount front brake calipers, all offered as standard.

The Black Katana will become the second color on offer for the bike when it will go on sale in the coming months.

International media drives have started. Here's one of the better videos from Motorcyclist Magazine.

Re: Intermot 2018: Suzuki to revive the iconic Katana nameplate with a brand new launch

Katana will only arrive next year, if at all it does.

The international model is not updated to Euro 5 emission norms yet. And hence it won't meet BS6.

Quote:
Now, in an interview with Koichiro Hirao, Managing Director, Suzuki Motorcycle India, and Devashish Handa, Vice President, Suzuki Motorcycle India, we’ve learned that the motorcycle won't make its way here in 2020.

The Katana that is on sale internationally hasn’t been updated to meet Euro 5 (BS6) norms, and once that happens, Suzuki India will gauge customer interest before deciding to launch the bike here. Hirao revealed that the survey takes place over a few months, and given that it'll take time for the bike to be BS6-compliant, we could only expect to see the bike here in 2021.
