IMHO these two cars portray different images to the customer. Scorpio appeals to a adventurous people while Xylo caters to comfortable long drives going on over a undulating road.

If you want to goto places where nobody has gone before then probably Scorpio is a better option since it has a better GC and 4X4 option.

Buy a Scorpio with ABS only

When you buy a Scorpio, please ensure that you buy one with ABS and EBD. B'coz the braking efficiency in Scorpio is very poor. Never ever opt for Xylo; it is yet to learn to travel in a straight line even on a very good road like IT express way in Chennai and braking efficiency much worse than Scorpio.

Alternatively, Try to consider a Ford Endevour if you can like the seating posture esp for middle and third row passengers.

Better Looking: This is just my opinion. Although OP also mentioned that he like Scorpio more than Xylo in the looks department.
More Zip: More Bhp 120 as compared to 114. More torque 290 as compared to 235. and Mhawk engine's are more peppier than Xylo engine.
Proven Thing: Scorpio is in the market from much longer time as compared to Xylo.

There are advantages of Xylo no doubt about that, which OP also has mentioned. I do not deny them.

These 2 vehicles are certainly targeting different consumer types.
But as OP is asking between these 2 so we are stating things regarding these.
Rest is up to him.

Of course neither are ideal for zipping through traffic but I prefer an SUV as opposed to a car, even though it's going to be used only by me (Reasons being heightened seating position, extra room for company on long trips, intimidating others on the road, pissing off people who have adopted the religion of global warming etc). I've driven an older Scorpio for a while satisfactorily zipping through traffic, however I've yet to TD a Xylo. It just looks enormously bulky hence my question about the feasibility of zipping it through traffic.

@ Kannan, definitely I'll go for 1 with ABS & EBD. The Ford Endeavor though is out of my budget.

@ shatrughna, I'm not 100% certain but the last time I went to the Scorpio website I believe they listed electric ORVMs & seat height adjustments for the top model.

Any insights into the mechanical parts used?

Sorry Evil, I got mixed up with the Endeavour AT- you are right - no elec. folding ORVMs (as yet). Lets hope M&M ups the game soon. Have you taken test drives of the models you are comparing? Try it - you may be surprised how easy it could be to decide. Hoping to hear soon about your decision.

Haww!

I have driven the Scorpio a lot and have rarely felt the body roll as a problem. The ride quality is however simply horrible.

If you are seating in the second row, you'll come out with a rejigged spinal cord... if you are seating in the third row, you'll come out without a spinal cord.

However, be advised that neither vehicle rates very high on agility.

For me the Scorp wins hands-down for the looks, torque and the looks again. :P

The 4X4 AT would be ideal for the Leh trips. You can also look at the Safari 4X4.

current 4x4 options are limited to safari and scorpio within a range of 12 lacs, if 4x4 is not necessary choose between xylo for space and scorpio for better engine and looks with added gizmos.

Any day Scorpio . The build quality of scorpio is better then that of Innova , Xylo. Xylo is so cheap in interior plastics that it feels as if things will fall out any time .

The quality of interiors is very bad in Xylo

Body role is certainly there in all the above SUVs as there is no traction control in the suspensions ..

Please substantiate your claims.

I drive a Scorpio and despite its sturdy build, it does not compare with the Innova.

Traction control has absolutely nothing to do with body roll. They are two absolutely different things. It deals exclusively with loss of traction between the tires and the road due to excessive torque or low grip.

If you wish to do high speed driving, get a sedan with good handling like a civic/laura/cedia. MUVs have a high chance of turning turtle at high speeds.

Innova - has the best interiors in its class. Scorpio, Safari, Tavera, Xylo etc do not come close. Innova's interiors feel like they would last & last - the plastics, dashboard, seats, carpet, roof - everything is a step up from its competitiors.

Xylo - Plastics leave a lot to be desired. As someone said, the inside door latches seem as if they will break if pulled hard (thankfully, they haven't... yet). The finishing on the edges of the plastics is pathetic. Other than the plastics, the rest is quite good, infact I find the seats excellent.

Edit: And yeah, Scorpio MHawk is what you are looking for. I hear the MHawk is available in 4x4 now. Go for it. The Xylo is a family car - no adventures in that elephant.

I own a Scorpio M Hawk . The body role is certainly there and we have to live with it.
But torque wise , seating wise , vision of the outside world sitting inside the car , this is the best in its class .....

If u see in Bangalore , u can spot more M Hawks then we have in last 2years

Based on your requirements, Scorpio mHawk is best suited.

However if you are comparing with the Sierra, Xylo is miles ahead in most areas. In terms of seating comfort, driving position, spaciousness, etc., the Xylo is better than Scorpio. Personally have no complaints about the 'quality of plastics' either. On the negative side, you may find both these vehicles not as sturdy as the Sierra when it comes to the metal outer body. Using tailored blanks to reduce weight, the panels are thin and easily dented even when one leans (forcefully) against the car, or leans over with elbows pressed on the car, etc. They should have atleast left the Scorpio alone like it initially was - befitting its 'mighty muscular' tagline.
