Report:
We met under the light house on the Marina around 6:30-7am on 18th September, 2011. Der_Junge, prithvi_seln, fiesta_21 and jp2U were already at the venue on time. I was late by 30 minutes due to parental harassment at home! haithereitsme arrived after me a few minutes later. We parked the cars facing the rising Sun.
It had rained heavily the previous night. The roads were soaked wet and there was palpable moisture evident in the cool breeze. I had picked my Swift for the meet as I needed peer opinion on its handling and engine feel from DerJung who I knew was bringing his Swift Zxi. Frankly it felt like sitting on a stool in the Swift, as compared to my Cruze driving position. I made up my mind to reduce the seat height after the meet. Back at the meet, the punctual gentlemen had saddled up in Der_Jung's slick looking Swift to check out his ICE setup. We introduced each other as except for Der Jung and prithvi_seln, the rest of us were meeting for the first time.
"Hi! I am ****.", I said to the 6'5" person to step out of DerJung's car.
Prithvi, shaking my hand, "Your nick? Tell me your nick (in fluent Madras Tamil)."
SD: "Oh! I am SedatedDrive." He is the first Team BHPian I met in person.
We first talked about our respective residence and work locations. The conversations flowed smoothly and we at times had more than one topic being discussed among the group. Everyone was impressed with DerJung's ICE setup which I missed experiencing by being late. This is when haithereitsme zinged in with his Santro. Both jp2U and Prithvi mentioned they have to leave soon. Topics ranged from ICE setups, service centers, Bullet bikes and their worsening quality, daily kilometer usage to the VIP outlook of the Scorpio among the cops. Haithereitsme mentioned how with his high usage he bought a petrol Santro since his fuel bills are paid by his company due to his extensive travel requirements. For if he had bought a diesel car, he would have had to bare the higher maintenance bills.
We decided to have a breakfast at the nearest Saravana Bhavan. jp2U took leave now and the rest of us left in prithvi_sln's Scorpio. As we trooped into his Scorpio, I noticed fiesta_21's diligently shaking the dirt of his shoes before boarding the Scorpio - the sign of a Team BHPian's care for others car.
On the way to the restaurant, prithivi showed us his ice setup with video. I was interested in something similar for my Cruze and prithivi was kind enough to suggest sources from where I can get a professional installation in my Cruze. We reached Saravana Bhavan where we had a simple breakfast of pongal, idly, dosa, vadai with sambar signed off with the traditional coffee/tea. We now discussed about my planned purchase of an SUV/MUV for my parents and haithereitsme's planned purchase for a second car. We discussed about Maruti's production issues, the new Force SUV about which we agreed it seemed to be well packaged, the new Swift, the Honda City as an alternative for haithereitsme.
After the breakfast we drove back to the Marina, exchanged contact information, took the mandatory photo of the star cast of cars with DerJung's SLR Cannon, agreed to meet up for the next weekend's Track meet and bade farewell. Before leaving DerJung test drove my Swift upon my request and gave his sign of approval. haithereitsme mentioned we should do a drive through North Chennai and visit all the cultural hot spots and we generally agreed that next time we should have a drive event.
Summary:
It was a wonderful meet that exceeded at least my expectations, and I hope that of others too. I thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to future meet ups or drive outs.
Photos:
DerJung might post the photos if he wishes. Please stay tuned.
Edit: The breakfast cost was borne by others and I was told to opt out. Thank you and hope to return the favour.
