The vehicle has run 17000 kms and the mechanic says that the front brake pads will last only for ~1000kms more. Isn't it a little early for the brake pads to get worn out? Should I wait for the warning in the infotainment system before getting them replaced?
Thank you..

Hey Zahoor,

I know of people on this forum and in my friends circle who have got their front brake pads replaced between 25k and 30k. So 18k seems a little early but you are, nevertheless, facing an issue and if replacing the pads fixes the issue then I think you must get it done. It will cost you around 5K, may be a little less.

Cheers

Last month I experienced this clutch issue in my XUV W4. I bought the car in July 2014 and till date I drove 26000 kms.

I was climbing a steep elevated road from Bangalore-Mumbai Highway to Sus road and had to stop in the middle due to traffic congestion in the top. While re-climbing slowly, I used half clutch and accelerator in a 1st gear. On reaching top and releasing my foot from the clutch pedal, I was surprised to notice that the clutch pedal remained in half pressed condition:Shockked:. I pumped the clutch twice and it came back to original position. No interruption in driving, only that engine revving sound increased while the clutch pedal stuck in half way.

Without wasting any time, I immediately visited SC and after diagnosis I was informed that this is due to leakage in a clutch slave cylinder, which was replaced within warranty free of cost.

My RM advised me that due to a hydraulic clutch system in XUV we must avoid using accelerator with clutch pressed and in case of slow traffic or slow climbing of steep elevation, just release the clutch for moving the car without pressing the accelerator.

This was the first niggle I experienced in my XUV till date.

Re. brake pad replacement, in 20K servicing my RM advised that my front brake pad may long for another 5K. Though he didn't insisted for replacement, but as next servicing is due now only in 30k and I keep driving long distances in regular intervals, I voluntarily asked him to replace the brake pads during 20K servicing. So the average life of brake pads of XUV is somewhere between 20K to 30K depending upon the usage.

This is a great piece of advice. Especially for someone like me coming from a petrol car where we are used to half clutch to move on steep incline. The diesel engines generally have moving ability without using accelerator in first/ second gear. So ideally, we can comfortable release the clutch and then start pressing accelerator. There is a thread on half clutch and some folks have elaborated it well - http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/techni...-position.html

Now with my XUV, I always release the clutch 90% or more before I even move my feet to accelerator. On the inclines it holds nicely, thanks to HHC as well.

agree: . In fact, I had brought this up on a discussion in the original XUV5OO review thread. It is a practice that I follow at all times. Double thumbs up to this.

10,000 kms or even 17,000 kms is a little too less for brake pads.
I just checked my records - after the initial change / retrofit of brake pads from Galpher to Bosch at 8,800 kms, I changed them again at 51,300kms.
Even then I was told that they would go for another 2,000-3,000 kms, but I didn't want to go back again so I got them changed.

That works out to a life of about 42,500 kms and a probable actual life of 45,000 kms.

Cost me 9,700 for both front and back pairs.

Yeah, the stock front usually last 25-30K KMs and the rear last longer (40 to 45K KMs if not more).

I am having XUV500 W6 from past 3 years. All of a sudden from last 2 days I am getting a rattling noise not 100% sure from where, but seems like below the gear box only when I am on lower gears and very random.
I am going on a long drive next week, so want to show it in the service center, but before that want to get an idea whether anyone else have faced similar issue or not.

If you are not sure where it is coming from, just check if it is coming from the plastic hood over the odometer. Try placing your hand when the sound comes (it usually comes when you pass rough roads). If it stops then the plastic hood is the culprit. It will be a 5 minute fix for the service center guys. you could place your handkerchief as a cushion under the plastic hood as a temp solution.

If it is the gearbox, well, best to take it to the service center.

A question to the first gen XUV W8 owners who had opted for the night vision parking camera from Mahindra.

The way the camera is installed in my car, I get to see the feed only while the reverse gear is engaged. The infotainment systems have an option for the Rev Camera. If I select this, it shows a blank screen with an "EXIT" button on the bottom right. Is this behaviour normal ? Or is the camera installed the wrong way.

I did bring this up during the last service, but the service center guy wasn't sure about the installation. He gave me a standard reply that it's like that in all XUVs, though I am not convinced.

Actually, that's the way it works in earlier version. At least in my car. Its because how it is wired. The camera gets power only when you slot into reverse. So when you check through Infotainment system option, the camera is not powered on at all.

If there is a knowledgeable guy at service center, you can get the wiring altered so that the camera is always powered irrespective of whether you are in Reverse or not. That way, you would be able to see the feed while going through the infotainment options. Frankly, I wouldn't recommend it as the camera would be used much more (it will be powered on and working, without anybody looking at the feed most of the time) and most likely would reach end of its useful life earlier.

Absolutely normal. Ditto in case of my XUV 500. Whenever I wanted to check the rear, but not necessarily to reverse, I engage the reverse gear just to have a glance! :D

Thanks for the quick response SDP & Ravi sir. Gives me a peace of mind that its not an issue and thats the way it works for others as well :)

But I do think that given the option in the infotainment, there could be a way to wire it properly in such a way that the camera is engaged while going to the Rev Camera mode or engaging the reverse gear. May be the accessories/service folks lack the expertise there. Anyway, happy to live with it the way it is now.

Reverse Camera in New Age - not sure if this mentioned, but adding here for quick reference -

In the new Age vehicle, the camera is always powered. Only the display switches to camera automatically when you slot into reverse gear.

If you are in a traffic and want to see who is tailgating you without slotting into the reverse gear. All you do is - press Info button, and choose Reverse camera. I use this sometimes when I fear a biker getting "too" close to me. So ideally, it is possible. Just get more helpful SA.

And wishes being horses, if there is an option someday to record that reverse camera feed on a USB drive connected to infotainment unit.... :D

It is unfortunate that my very first post at Team-BHP is on this forum. I have just purchased a XUV W10 FWD and took delivery on the 21st of December. I have been driving this beast within city to work, shopping etc. since then. At the time of PDI, I noticed the airbag indicator come on in the instrument cluster and it stayed on. It was my foolishness to assume that this meant the airbags are active and ready for use in case of an accident. I had also asked the sales rep at the time of PDI about it and did not get a satisfactory response then. Since this kept bothering me, I read the manual yesterday and understood that this indicates a malfunction with the airbag.
I called the sales rep and explained it to him and also expressed my extreme displeasure for not owning up at the time of PDI. Anyway, I took the vehicle to the dealership and it was solved within 10 minutes. The service rep told me that it was a sensor issue and a simple reset solved the issue.
The light no longer comes on now, however I continue to suspect if there is indeed an airbag malfunction and whether the service reps have fiddled around to ensure that the light does not come on. I may be getting hyper about this but some advise from this group will be great to receive. Safety first....
I will follow this up next weekend with a post on my selection and buying process with some pics.

I can understand your concern. I too had a similar experience on Day 1 of my XUV last year.

Would suggest you call up Mahindra customer care, and explain your concern. They will arrange for a full check-up of your vehicle if required. One good thing i have learned about Mahindra is, atleast their customer service department is good - Every complaint is taken seriously and addressed properly.

Worst case, you may also write to Sanjoy Gupta (gupta.sanjoy@mahindra.com), Vice President – Customer Care, Automotive Division and explain your concern.
