Re: How often should we change gear oil?

Hello everyone, I own a 2012 Honda City Automatic, and I bought her used this June.

She has run 20,400 KMs, and I am going to take her to service soon.

I couldn't find the record if the transmission oil has been changed, and it being an automatic, I don't mind changing the transmission oil before 10 years or the stipulated km.

Unfortunately, I did not get the owner's manual with the car, and I am not sure about the grade and the quantity required to fill in.

Can somebody please advise regarding the same, and also a good quality oil for the AT Transmission?

Re: How often should we change gear oil?

Hello all, sorry for resuming old thread.
I have an automatic scooty, and was using the castrol gear oil 120ml coming with the castrol activ MB 10w30 scooter engine oil pack.
But then I read about GL-4 and GL-5 and found out that GL-5 is more corrosive on soft metals found in gearboxes like copper and brass and thus have purchased
Motul All Gear EP GL-4 oil.
The scooters I have are:
2020 Hero Destini,
1991 LML NV,
2010 Hero Pleasure.

Please provide your suggestions as after much research, I have settled on this product.

Re: How often should we change gear oil?

GL5 as being more corrosive...... etc is an old old fairy tale that's no longer true some decades ago.

Stick to GL5-only manual recommendation, otherwise gl4 if permitted.

Re: How often should we change gear oil?

Hello all, I have recently repaired my dad's Bajaj Chetak 2 stroke and he has poured Castrol GTX 20w50 engine oil into gearbox per his experience (He was the only recommended old mechanic in my area).
Shall I continue to use this in the future, because engine oil has detergents which gear oil usually doesnt have, and Vespa official forum recommends GL-4 gear oil

Re: How often should we change gear oil?

Basically engine oils meets Anti-wear/EP requirements of a GL4 oil specs, for decades.

Decades of user experience supports such claim to have worked.

1990's Hondas were examples.

Sorry to reply late as I saw the post today only. In case of transmission oil for automatic scooters like Destini, Pleasure, Scooty pep+, Activa , etc use the grade mentioned in the manual. Almost all these scooters ( CVT transmission) requires same engine oil in gear box also. Avoid using the Castrol gear oil which is heavier oil. ( Actually there is no gear box in scooter CVT; only the final drive requires lubrication. That is why the quantity required will be very less. Around 75 ml to 120 ml depending on the scooter model. )One more important thing is many local mechanics don't measure the quantity by opening the level check bolt but simply pour the oil around 200-300ml. These 2 factors ( heavier oil + more qnty) will make the pickup hard.

Generally, we like to go ahead with the oils recommended in the owner's manual. But here is what I do for my scooters:

Mahindra Duro: Company recommended SAE140 oil. This is very thick oil. Used it in past. No problem. Since last few years, I have been using the castrol gear oil shown in your post. This too works well, no problems noticed. This oil is 80W90. It is quite thick, though a bit thinner than SAE140. But it contains additive package suitable for the gearbox. SAE140 is difficult to source with trustable and popular sources. Some dealers of loose oil do sell this, but that it a plain unbranded loose oil without additive package. So Castrol 80W90 is a better choice.

Hero pleasure: Castrol gear oil 80W90, as recommended by the company.

TVS Jupiter: TVS recommends use of engine oil 10W30 in the gearbox too. So I have been following this. But in future, I plan to shift to the Castrol 80W90.

The castrol gear oil 80W90 shall be good for all scooters. They all have similar drive ratio, gearbox design and power output. Also don't worry about corrosion from GL-4 or GL-5. These gearboxes don't use any brass / bronze parts at all. All shafts and gears are made of hardened alloy steels.

The recommended interval for gear oil change is 20,000 km if I remember correctly. Hence for most scooters, it needs to be changed once in 3 - 6 years.

I presume 2012 Honda City Automatic adorns a torque-converter based AT. If that is the case, then as far as I know 60000 km is the point where the replacement of ATF takes place for this vehicle. However, its been almost 10 years and if you are intent upon changing ATF as a preventive measure. Then you can try Authorized service center of Honda they always have ATF and they can replace it. I own a Honda Accord 2008 and has a torque-converter based AT, last week I got the ATF replaced but I got the job done from an independent workshop. A few years ago I had the ATF replaced from Authorized service center and the car mileage was around 98000 km. It was expected to last till 138000 km however my car mileage is 119000 km and when I inspected the fluid prior to replacement last week it was reddish-black and somehow the shifts were no longer smooth. Therefore, last week I decided to get the fluid replaced from an independent workshop. The ATF bought is named: "Idemitsu 30040090-75000C020 ATF Type H-Plus Automatic Transmission Fluid" and I bought the required quantity from Amazon using the below link:

https://www.amazon.in/gp/product/B07...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Since, the ATF replacement there has been a marked difference, the shifts are so smooth , I can barely feel unless i look up the RPM meter!

Transmission Fluid

Hey guys,

My 2012 i10 is at 34k km. I normally take it to a local garage. However, I don't trust their knowledge beyond the practical aspects that one can gain by experience (like changing parts, oils, etc). So, I keep an eye on the maintenance section in owner's manual.

The one piece that is confusing is related to Transmission Fluid. I have a manual transmission.
  • Does Hyundai use ATF for manual transmission? I searched online and it says "they can". That's hardly clear.
  • Is the Manual transmission fluid also called gear oil? I searched on boodmo and Amazon, and while there are a few 'manual transmission fluid" items, mostly "gear oil" shows up.
  • If Hyndai does use, ATF, do I not need to replace it at 40 km? I checked the forum post on ATF, but members there talk about automatic transmission. I couldn't find anything on manual.
  • How much is the quantity to do a replace instead of top off? Mine would need a replace at 40k but I want to get an estimate from the garage when I go for regular oil change. At some places it states, 6L for ATF and 2L for manual transmission fluid. Not sure what is right.
  • Should I just bite the bullet and take it to Hyndai ASS for transmission fluid change? They are going to be expensive with all the add-on charges they put in, but if it is a must, then I guess I have to live with it.
I really appreciate any inputs related to this topic. It will be even great if you have a URL or link that has additional information.

It is called as gear oil for manual transmission car. Check the manual to know of the oil qty for your particular car, or you do not have to worry about it as the mechanical figure it out and take care of what is required. Just take it a local garage and get done in a matter of few minutes.

I don't ever remember changing the transmission oil for petrols, that has been there in the family.
I have a Ritz Petrol, it's run ~88k and I don't remember changing the transmission oil, like ever. Never had a gear problem. Not sure if gear oil change is required for manuals. My 800 has run over 1Lakh without a gear oil change.
