The trick is to go by the service manual and not by what the SA might fancy. The MASS (Indus) over here even asked me to bring the car every 5K for service even when the manual says its 10K. They sure try their luck with the naive customers.
I have been servicing my car from last 6.5 yrs and following as per the service manual. 9-10K intervals only.

To be frank, 5K interval is for stuff like wheel rotation, alignment check, air filter cleaning etc. Which i do outside. So the SA is not completely wrong when they say 5K interval, but then they never say anything if you don't listen to them . Every 5K they will do all this checks and give a good wash for your car and charge 1500rs.

But all service centers are same if we are naive. be it any car, they will surely want to extract money from customers

Why do you think switching between mineral and synthetic is not a good idea? I have the 4 year warranty on the car and don't think MASS will allow customers to bring in the oil for replacement. And over here, it is either Shell mineral or Mobil synthetic that they use.

I got my dzire serviced today at 10k and the engine oil was Mobile 5W40. The SA said its a semi synth and not fully synthetic and asked me to use it for 10k and change to fully synthetic at 20k if need be.

If you are sure it is a 5W40 then it is undoubtedly a fully synthetic oil.

The bill says 5W40. For 3.1 Liters, I was billed around Rs1600, so I don't think its fully Synthetic. The SA did mention its a semi and that Maruti changed the grades recently

Can we know the brand of oil used? 5W40 has to be Synthetic oil. If possible a picture of the bill masking the personal details will help.

I have been paying 3K for the Shell, Castrol, Mobil 5W40 oil and you pay only 1600. Lol.

Re: Maruti Circular on Swift Engine Oil : Change from 15W40 to 5W40

I am from Thrissur, Kerala. I did my 10000 and 20000 services from BRD Motors thrissur. The price of the 5w40 engine oil available at this dealer has come down. Now it costs only about 650rs per litre including taxes. Earlier it was between between 1000 and 1100rs per litre. My 30000 km service will done on march 3rd. Will update exact cost after the service.

The synthetic oil definitely costs round about Rs 3000/3500 . I got my swift serviced recently and thats what they charged me this time and the last time.

Called maruti corporate office in cochin and also a regional manager of Indus motors, they are telling that 5w40 engine oil used in swift is semi synthetic(not fully synthetic).

Check Mobil website and fund what 5W40 oil means. AFAIK 5W40 is synthetic and NOT semi-synthetic. The price for mineral oil (15W40) is ~300/Litre whereas synthetic costs ~ 980/Litre.

Swift takes in 3.1L so mineral oil will give you a bill of ~ 1000 whereas synthetic will be ~3000.

This is what is to my understanding. I don't understand what Maruti and their Service engineers are upto.

Re: Maruti Circular on Swift Engine Oil : Change from 15W40 to 5W40

There is no semi-synthetic oil with a viscosity rating as 5W40, at least not in India. Ask them to give it to you in writing along with relevant details about the oil like its marketed name, batch number, viscosity, API rating & then get it verified by Mobil.

Re: Maruti Circular on Swift Engine Oil : Change from 15W40 to 5W40

I guess there something is definitely amiss, for the past 1 month I have communicating with Maruti Customer Care to get to know the engine oil put into the factory, but they are not willing to disclose this info.

All they say is that the recommended grade is 5W40. Not even the confirmation that the oil they put in factory is 5W40.

Re: Maruti Circular on Swift Engine Oil : Change from 15W40 to 5W40

Did the 30000 km service of swift zdi. The engine oil used was Mobil 5w40. Cost was approx 625 per litre(including 14.5 tax). So for 3.1litres its approx 1937 RS.

Re: Maruti Circular on Swift Engine Oil : Change from 15W40 to 5W40

I don't think its a big deal. All K series engines are produced with 5W30 Engine oil from Total. Exports are 0W20.

5W40 is widely used in service. Considering the weather of India, I would suggest to go with 5W40 at it offer the best durability.
