Re: New Tech: Digital Rear View Mirror?

I am against implementations just because the technology is available. It just adds more items to the test-cases and introduces additional points of failure.

If the car's design demands the use of a camera instead of a mirror, then its kind of ok. In that case, I would crib about the car's design though.

Re: New Tech: Digital Rear View Mirror?

I think it will NOT work in india.

It is prone to theft replacement will be costly for the hatch & sedan buyer. Indian Quality is a debatable question. I would not want to be let down by failures & malfuntions. In this case i prefer a conventional ORVM/RVM.

I think this would hit only top models costing 1 crore+ and then tricle down to hatch segment

I do feel cameras all-around will be a common feature in future, and the cost factor may come down accordingly.

In this case, the German quality maybe great, but I will trust these technologies only once it gets into mainstream Japanese brands. That will ensure that it is ‘production-ready’ outside Europe.

Re: New Tech: Digital Rear View Mirror?

If one is using a camera/ monitor in place of a mirror, why would one place the camera in the same position as the mirrors, which generates a blind spot?

Re: New Tech: Digital Rear View Mirror?

Fixing cameras in place of mirrors and then adding an option of sliding them in, kinda create a cavity with shutter to hold them safe and expose them only when the car is ON?

I think that's easily doable and would work in our country. No?

Absolutely correct. Nice technology and it would tale some time to get used to it after its fit on the vehicle. People who are used to the ORVM's would panic for a second when they find NO ORVM.

With two-wheelers zipping past (no offence meant) very near to the ORVM's these camera's are very susceptible to be broken every other day.

Replacing these would be like the run-flats in BMW.

The Lamborghini URUS concept SUV showcased earlier this year also had this technology for its ORVM.

Well, those are just concepts, whether it will make it to production we just have to wait and see. If I am not mistaken, we have seen many concept cars having this technology.

If its a rear view mirror for both sides, is there a display to see both left side lane and right side lane independently?

If I want to change lanes to right or left, I am interested in seeing traffic behind me on those lanes only respectively.

Too many screens spoil my driving experience.

Re: New Tech: Digital Rear View Mirror?

ORVM serves more than one purpose on Indian roads. In addition to the rear view function, right ORVMs ensures that the drivers coming from the opposite side keep that margin while driving. If their judgement goes wrong slightly, we would lose the ORVM but in its absence, the entire right side body panels are at risk.

Nice concept though and I see Hyundai to introduce it first in Indian cars while Europeans might be the last to do so.

...
+1 to this.

Additionally, with a slight biker touch, a camera would likely be more damaged than a ORVM.

But it would be a super cool thing to have a wide angle cam sitting about 1 feet (antenna like) above the roof streaming into the screen!

Re: New Tech: Digital Rear View Mirror?

When manufacturers actually sell cars to the public, there are a LOT more factors that come into play, like warranties, legislation, current regulations, lawsuits etc. These camera ORVM's are quite 'gimmicky'. Suddenly, something as simple as a mirror becomes a LOT more complicated. When that happens there is a LOT more stuff that can go wrong. Simply due to the KISS principal (keep it simple stupid!) , manufacturers do not generally introduce these technologies to the common man.
If the camers does go OEM, it will start at the highest price bracket of cars, like Bugatti, Ferrari etc. That has'nt happened yet, so I doubt it will happen anytime soon.
