Team-BHP - Approved Engine Oils by Maruti Suzuki

The Ecstar branded oil supplied by Maruti at their service stations is rubbish, as good as liquid jaggery. It may be priced low but is junk.

Replaced the oil used at the last service at a Maruti Authorized centre at the 8k mark with Mobil 5W30 and the difference is like night and day. Paid Rs 1500 for a 3.5 L can at an FNG. Got 21 kmpl at our recent 4000 kms Gujarat trip. The engine is back to its revv happy nature and pulls cleanly. Mine is a 2012 Alto K10 VXi. Odo is at 105000 kms

Shell HX5 is equally good, used frequently in the past.

First oil change for my XL6, the service center gave me an option to choose between the ECSTAR 0W16 and Servo 0W40 (fully synthetic)

I chose the fully synthetic oil for Rs. 987+GST per litter. I feel the car is driving better, less NVH/ smoother, but too soon to say, might just be new vs old oil.

MASS have put ECSTAR CASTROL 0W20. But, want to use Shell HX8. Its been very hard to find in Bangalore.

Other one which looks promising is "TotalEnergies - 0W20 Engine Oil - Quartz 9000 Future GF6 -API SP". Not sure how is this compared to Shell HX8 0W20.

Its difficult to say if this can damage the engine, I'm sure they are rampantly using this oil, I saw another post in this thread on this.

From what I've read, VVT is normally a consideration to use thinner oil, but everything else like engine tolerances, seem like made up reasons by OEMs.

0W16 will give better FE, but when things get hot in summer, not sure how much this one helps.

This engine isn't the smoothest beyond 2.5k rpm, so lets see if the thicker oil really helps there.

I'll anyways take this up with the service center again to understand why they believe 0w-40 works. Anyways, they did mention that synthetic oil was 0w-40 grade, while the other one is 0w-16, when they recommended, to which I remember responding, "0w-16 is an odd grade, never heard of it".

My service centre keeps filling 0W40 synthetic oil in my 2019 Petrol MT Swift. The warranty gets over in March and I want to shift to 0W20 which seems to be the recommended oil as per the manual. Can you guys kindly suggest a reputable brand for the oil. I would love to put Liqui Moly but it is expensive.

I own Grand Vitara Strong Hybrid, and recently got my 3rd service and oil change done. The oil used is 5W-40, which is not the recommended grade as per the service manual. As per manual it has to be either 5w-30, 10w-30, 0w-20 or 0w-16.

I have noticed a drop in fuel efficiency post oil change, and once I complained to Maruti about it, the dealer said 5W-40 is better compared to the other recommendations. There is price difference of about 1100 between 5w-30 and 5w-40,and seems like the service center is duping people in the name of better oil whereas it is not needed. Mine is a sedately city driven car.

Is it ok to use 5w-40? And, what is the price difference between the 5w-40 and 5w-30, somewhere I read that 5w-30 is cheaper, some say 5w-40 is cheaper, so not sure.

This is the scam most service centers do. They will use a thicker oil as they're more expensive than say the 0w16. You should have refused to pay. I recently got my service done for the dzire and I had specified I want the 0w16 and they filled 0w20 which pointed out before paying the bill and they changed the oil at the last moment.

I guess you are right, I was not able to verify the engine oil grade at that moment and thought of verifying it later. However, does using 5W-40 pose any problems in the long run? Apart from the cost, am I looking at any other problems? I have already witnessed a slight drop in fuel efficiency.

Also, considering Delhi summers will 5W-40 fare any better than 5W-30?

I will surely ask for a refund from the service center, but should I insist on a change in oil as well?

Got a call from the SA, saying refund will not be possible/very difficult. He offered a free wheel alignment/balancing or Teflon coating. I refused both, I am sticking for a refund for the additional amount charged.

He was literally begging me to take back the complaint, saying it will be deducted from him salary in case of a refund and may end up losing his job too. I don't know what to do now, I am guessing these are just tactics.

I own a 2019 Dzire petrol. The manual recommends 0W20 engine oil, but as usual most of the service centers don't have 0w20 fully synthetic in stock. Was wondering if I can use 5w30, since summers in Kolkata can reach 40 degrees. Thanks in advance!

Not an issue. This is good engine oil as MASS won't have stock of 0w20 other than Ecstar.
Have used since last 500kms.

However, I feel Ecstar Castrol 0w20 has better response & revv happy than HX8 for my Swift P. Donno why. Still trying to figure out what's all the hype of Shell HX8.

Just go for 5w30 Shell/Castrol semi-synthetic. If you say, synthetic it will cost more unless your usage is > 10000kms per year.
