This used to happen in my Omni. I didnt have the habit of locking the door with the keys in omni. I used to engage the lock from inside, get out of the car and then close the door.
Once I did this keeping the keys inside. For a moment i was like oh crap. But then the omni lock is very easy to remove. I just needed a steel scale to remove the lock. :) Pretty simple huh...
Yes I have. In my Ford Escort in the UK (1970's) I had to force the opposite side window down a bit. The I used a long metal flat rod to push up the button. On a friends M800 we simply opened the rear quarter glass, and on my Accent we had to call the Hyundai man.. He removed one rear seal, put in a 2' ruler, and had us going in all of two minutes!

This is what is called a 'slim jim' more commonly in the US. I am not sure if the same name is applicable in the other countries as well.

Get a remote locking system(nowadays very cheap) and put that on the same keychain that holds your car key and the problem is solved for ever !
As a rule I always lock my car with the keys :-)

Well, this happened to me last week, on 1 Jan. We were touring and were at a remote village. It was evening & we were packing up, and leaving to find a place to sleep off the hangover.
Loaded my Swift VXi boot with the luggage and closed it with the key inside, and as soon as I shut it, I knew what had happened! Some1 took the trouble to bring a local mechanic and he bought with him a meter long metal scale. I knew this wouldn't work since the Maruti guys had told me when I bought the car. He nevertheless tried for quite a while, in turn breaking a plastic wheel on the lock, so that the door wouldn't open from outside (came to know of this after I managed to get the keys). Even tried the mobile trick with the key at home; ofcourse it didn’t work.
My Maruti dealer's helpline told me that they could send a technician the next morning from the nearest available service center and they could do it in 15 mins. This was their technique, that we finally did and managed to open the car –
-Prop the front right on a jack (borrow from some1 like we finally managed to do, since your jack would be inside the car)
-Under the driver side floor board, there is a 2-3” diameter, round, plastic/rubber cap glued to the body. Use a screwdriver (we used a nail cutter’s blade) to remove this.
-Pull out the insulation mat thru this hole.
-Now, insert a longish rod/screwdriver/ruler/whatever (we used a steel rod that we picked up and bent it as we required) thru this, and try to reach your boot release lever (next to the driver seat) and push it up.
-Viola, done; the boot is open!
However simple this might sound, its v.tricky considering the angle the rod should enter to reach and push the lever up, instructions that someone looking at the rod (now visible inside the car) thru the window/windshield has to give to the person lying under a jacked up car, etc [FONT=Wingdings]:)[/FONT]
[FONT="]It works though, and saves you money (I’m told around ~Rs.1500 – quarter glasses comes in pairs!) and time (if you have to wait for the service center guys, esp if you are far away). And when I went to get the door lever fixed, local Maruti service center guys were surprised that we knew about this, and that we could pull it off![/FONT]
I dont know if other cars has this 'option' (Tata Indigo, for one, does not have it).
oh yes i did !! But its the classic maruti zen, tried it with a near by fellow zen drivers key and wollah it opened ! Me and Him, both were like :Shockked:.

If you put the Remote on the same key ring as the Ignition key and forget it inside the car , "YOUR REMOTE WILL BE INSIDE THE CAR"!
Today my wife locked the Santro with keys inside at our apartment gate. So I called Trident Hyundai to come and unlock it. Just before the Hyundai guys came, one of the drivers at the apartment unlocked it after removing the beading.
Many years ago my uncle locked his 800 with the keys inside. Didn't know what to do... Contemplated various options like forcing a window open etc. Then a wagon-r just pulled up beside us. My uncle asked the wagon-r guy if he could borrow the key. And behold, the wagon-r key unlocked the 800! :)
Early days of my Alto, I visited the bank to get the car loan statement, mistakenly locked with fingers holding out the lever with keys inside..!!
Explained the scene to the bank manager, got the duplicate out of the bank locker and returned it to him with a lot of thanks :)
This was in 2002, now a days, not many banks with hold one original key... it sounds stupid..!!

Not if you always use the remote lock button instead of the key to lock the car.
However some systems will auto lock the door if you don't start the engine within some 5-10 minutes.
In that case you may end up with the keys/ remote lock etc inside the car.

Happened twice in my old M800. Once at the railway station and once while shopping. The first time took a autorickshaw back home and got the duplicate keys. The second time, the house keys were also in the car :eek:.
Went and asked a traffic policeman for help - he promptly called someone and within 20 minutes, the guy arrived and opened the rear quarter glass using an electric wire!! Had to pay him Rs. 200/- (and a thank you to the policeman!).
If you have seen this trick in person, then you'll understand how easy it is to steal a car!!

clevermax, I don't think we can lock the Palio with the keys inside (unless, of course, if you have installed an additional security system installed).
At least, my ELX can't be locked by pressing the door lock lever while getting out of the car.
What happens when you press either front door lock lever (to lock the door) while climbing out with the door open, the central locking system simply goes back to release mode. I always thought it was a neat feature!
The good thing about the Scorpio is that it is impossible to lock the car (unknowingly) with the keys inside. The car gets locked (automatically) only after the car reaches a speed of 20kmph.

Ingenious indeed - never heard of this method before. But just one word of caution - having someone lie under a jacked-up car is asking for trouble. Yeah, inspite of the wheel not being flat and attached to the car.

The Swift's doors also lock automatically at 20kmph, but I think I can still lock it with the keys inside - when car is stationary ie.
