Some inputs:

• What & how much do you eat and drink when on a drive? Nausea / motion sickness often depends on the contents of your stomach. Avoid drinking liquids (especially fizzy drinks) on a road trip, and try to remain on an empty stomach.

• How is it that a person driving a car never reports nausea / motion sickness? That's because the eyes follow the direction of the vehicle's travel. Take your eyes off the road, and nausea is more likely. So, avoid looking at a mobile phone screen, or lying down in a moving car, and that should eliminate the nausea.

• How fast / hard is the car being driven? Is it a tall car (SUV) or a low-slung sedan? Slowing down the car on mountain roads often relieves motion sickness. For us as a family, both my wife and daughter begin to feel nauseous when I'm driving above 50 kmph in the hills when riding a tall SUV. The same happens at 55-60 kmph when in a sedan or hatchback.

• Consult your otorhinolaryngologist (ENT) to rule out BPPV or any other medical cause for the nausea.

What you have is motion sickness as other members have already pointed out.

How old are you? How long have you been having these symptoms?

Biting a piece of ginger or keeping on smelling a lemon are remedies I've heard of. Speed needs to be reduced on ghat roads, with frequent breaks. Motion sickness can be tackled without medications to an extent.

Hey, I've just turned 18. This started when we started taking trips on our Amaze. I feel worse while going on rumble strips, Speed breakers etc not Hills.
I'm hoping to sit on the drivers seat very soon .
I'll keep in mind your suggestions!

Start driving as soon as possible and all your troubles will magically disappear! I had motion sickness as a child and am talking out of experience. All the best!

Not really. It is better to rule out any pathological cause of the nausea first. Given that the OP's problem is pretty intense and acute...

If I move to the front it does seem to somewhat go away but the feeling still lingers.

Lot of valuable suggestions are already covered. May be I would just add that taking adequate breaks could help alleviate. Step out, stretch a bit, take deep breaths, wash your face, simply give your body some time to recuperate and break off the loop.

re: Nausea and stomach pain while traveling in a car

I feel similar issues, but mostly in buses and not really in cars. Some observations I had on myself:

1. more boat-like the suspension, more it happens
2. if I eat full stomach and leave for journey within 1 hour of having meal, this happens. So I eat about 60% of my stomach capacity, and take some snacks to eat in regular intervals.
3. It happens more when the boat-like suspension happens to be clubbed with all air-tight (read windows up or AC on)
4. Anything having black salt helps. One burp after a few mins and everything is normal. Either lick a pinchful of black salt, or better packaged way is to carry a couple of 'pulse' candies. Those have black salt at the center. It helps.

I know you've mentioned that no candies or windows could help, still if you could find something relatable, try it. if issue persists, consult a physician. At times it has to do something with ENT department too (there are fluids in our ears that are responsible for sense of balance. If there's anything wrong there even in terms of a basic fungal infection or something, it may result in motion sickness or vertigo, depending from person to person). Nothing meant to scare you, 95% of times the solution is really simple. Pay a visit to a medical practitioner in such cases and not rely on general people opinion if issues persist.

Before, you change the shock absorbers, sit in another amaze in the back for a while and see if you feel better.

Stiffer shocks definitely will help in reducing the vertical and sideways movement. But , you need to identify if the shocks are faulty first

I don't think that's possible. But for reference, I've sat in cars like the Corolla, Dzire, Xcent etc but never felt it.
The car has gone in for some brake and suspension work. The dampers seemed to have reached the end of their life, that could've been the reason, let's hope it is!

I do have some digestive issues which I'm working on curing. I think that plays a part as well as my height and the fact that I have to slouch and sit at the back. I hope things reduce now, considering I've made some dietary changes and started drinking more water.
I do carry the black salt candy and that has helped sometimes.
Thank you for your concern and suggestions

Re: Nausea and stomach pain while traveling in a car

I get this "feeling" almost every time i start using my phone(while not driving) to do something other than a call(message, read something on screen etc). Also when i try to read a book or the newspaper while in the car. Happens whether I am in the front passenger or back seat.

I immediately open the window(s) and peer out. Usually takes an hour or more to get back to normal.

Re: Nausea and stomach pain while traveling in a car

I regularly get nausea when travelling in the back set for anything more than 20-30 minutes. If I try to read anything, the effect is even more rapid and pronounced. Amazingly, there is no hint of any car sickness when I am driving for hundreds of kilometers on end. That is why I rarely , if ever, agree to go on road trips where I am not driving myself. Being a passenger, especially in the back seat, just does not agree with my constitution.

Re: Nausea and stomach pain while traveling in a car

My observation on motion sickness is that it happens whenver there is a mismatch in the actual motion & perceived motion (via eyes and ears, accelerations)

Motion sickness (atleast for my family) has increased due their focus on Mobiles inside the cars. I advised them to keep them away and look only 10 min/hr kind and be engaged in looking outside which helped to a large extent for my mom.

Re: Nausea and stomach pain while traveling in a car

I can totally relate with you, I have the exact same issue when I’m being driven in some specific cars, although no issues when I’m driving myself. So my pattern goes like- I feel motion sick in cars like our 1st gen Alto, my mom’s 2015 Sumo, any bus for that matter when I’m not sitting at the front row, however I never have any issues when I’m being driven in my dad’s Rapid and our ex Estilo. I came to a conclusion that for me it’s something to do with suspension setup and glass area.

I will break down w.r.t. cars-

1. Alto- soft suspension and nvh

2. Sumo- suspension is all over the place and that drone sound after 80kmph breaks havoc

3. Bus- except when in front sit, bus journey is never a pleasurable one

4. Rapid- There’s no unnecessary vertical or lateral movement and sense of airiness

5. Estilo- Car with really huge glass area and fairly stiff setup

So all in all I try to avoid being driven in suvs and cars with claustrophobic cabin & bouncy suspension.

Hope you find it useful.
Cheers!

Re: Nausea and stomach pain while traveling in a car

Some people are more sensitive than others - A few things to help along the way. I travel frequently with senior citizens and kids alike on vehicles notorious for making people sick in the rear seats.

1. Clean interiors - The car`s interior should be clean and odor free, at the same time it should not have any strong fragrance either. AC - On.

2. Driver - I know some geniuses who can drive at slow yet rough manner that even the backseat of a long wheelbase sedan it becomes unbearable. Drive should be steady, speed is not the problem.

3. Health - People like me have issues with Vestibular disorders (its there in a lot of people undiagnosed), often made worse by diseases like Chickenpox etc sometime in the past.

4. Vehicle itself and its condition- Not all diesels are bad, Not all petrols are good. Not all Tall vehicles are bad, Not all Sedans are good. Its best to learn to drive properly and maintain vehicles in top shape than hunt for vehicles. My 6 year old vehicle is better than many newer ill maintained ones, etc etc.

5. Phone and Music - Do NOT read, this is the single biggest contributing factor these days with youngsters (including my teenage daughter) and others alike. Keep your eyes on the farthest object available, travel with good company and enjoy conversations than loud music, Subwoofers? keep them under control.

Motion sickness in some cases are unavoidable - consult a doctor, take appropriate medication and carry on, dont let it stop you from traveling. It has not stopped me
