K&N Air Filter, the side effects.

So you really want to use K&N to sqeeze out the last drop of performance, read this and think again.

Hey, nice to see you back after a long time.

Don't get me wrong but it looks like there's a very clear pushing for AC Delco.

Hi Rudra,

Nice to see you again as well, yes, its a bit of push for AC Delco but also generally K&N is not considered to be safe alternative, if you look at the race kits issued by HRC or TRD, you won't see K&N or similar type air filters in their high performance intake kits.

Interesting article. Confirms a lot of suspicions. But where's Pipercross? And no Greens?

I've never believed the "bolt-on" 10% performance increase claims by filters...it takes a lot more to get there...

Isn't this but obvious.
If you make your filter such that lot of air can go through, you will also reduce the dust capturing ability?
Of course you can go for fancy materials and auto-statically charged fibers, but that will push the cost up.

Does nt seems to be convincing and it is almost silent on the performance part.

It gives you CFM rates, also dirt ingested, what else do you need to convince yourself, they are not telling you to ban K&N, just use at your peril, in dusty north, I for one would never go near it, I did use K&N filters on my bike and car in US for a short while, one look at the intake MAP convinced me otherwise.

I guess an acid test would be opening the intake manifold in Delhi after 5000kms for use. All you K&N guys(I am sure there are lots in Delhi) maybe you can post a few pictures?

Also, after installing filter, have the oil change intervals decreased? Would be interesting to note if folks using aftermarket filters have seen any change in the oil consumption.

Also, what is the effect of use of filters on petrol engines versus diesels. The tests in the article have been carried out on a diesel engine. Don't know if similar data is available out there which compares performance of different filters on a petrol engine at some fixed air flow. The filters job is to filter the air and the function would remain same on both engines. But with the requirements of air being many times more for diesel, and going by the premise (from the article) that more air passing thru also means more dust, maybe the effect on petrol engines is not as much.

Just glanced thru the article.. will dig a little more and see if I can come up with any tests done on petrol engines. I wouldn't think companies would be making filters if they were at the risk of getting exposed with articles such as these

I know atleast 3 vehicles which have bore replacements prematurely who had K and N s .But here they were 2 wheelers here . We could see a step in the bore literally .

Gurkha,

That graph would have been much more objective if AC Delco was not the sweet side of correctness so much!

I would take this article with a pinch of salt.
