from last 3-4 weeks, i've been noticing a slight whizzish sound from the engine bay of my OHC, on close inspection it seems to originate from alternator area and i suspect it may be alternator bearing. all the belts seem good. this noise start to come only after driving for 8-10 kms. has anyone experienced similar issue? any idea whether ONLY the alternator bearing can be changed?
i'm thinking of visiting bosch service center in thane tomorrow to find out what their opinion is. |
poured some water over the alternator belt and the noise disappeared; so, probably it is the alternator belt. will get it inspected by a mechanic tomorrow.

Thanks Vandit, Desmosedici & KSM-Vtec. It definitely is dropping because of the steering pump leak then. I have a very minor leak in the pump assembly and have to top up the oil once every 3 months. |
Welcome. Keep sharing your experiences (good or bad). As long as we continue to own the OHC, i think it will only help all of us.

There also a lot of noise from the front suspension when the car goes on bad roads. the guy said the front lower arms have to be replaced, and the same would cost 5k.
Does that have to be done? And downside of continuing with the current one |
I get the same too. Again i reckon it just needs a complete overhaul and check of the suspension. In my case, when i go over a bad patch or stretch on the road, I've notice the front end to step out of line laterally with a noticeable shudder. It's definitely the springs+shocks & steering arm setups that need to be inspected well in my opinion. The 13" wheels dont help much either.

Thanks for the update. Another point to keep in mind should i hear a similar sound lol :)
Update : My mileage figures from the latest refill .. (Tankful to First auto cut - 11.9 kmpl. 380kms / 31.9 lts.
BTW, could someone comment on my earlier query? Thanks !

I noticed that the insulation wooly material (felt like cotton lint) that is used on the inside of the panel along the door was all worn out and almost crumbling.
It got me wondering if there's anyone who can fix this or attend to it?? Do i need to get this done at the interior specialists or the guys who do sound setups?? What purpose is does this lint serve?? Is it for sound dampening only?
I also found the door speaker to be cracking in the treble.. looks like it needs replacement too, so if anyone's got their Sound Setup changed on the OHC, please recommend the front door speaker replacements!

yep. OHC is a gem and this thread proves it; sadly, i've to put it up for sale due to relocation out of India. :Frustrati
another update to the alternator belt sound; sprayed some 'rustoff' on the pulley and the noise has not re-appeared in 120 kms of driving since then.
FE of 11.9 is good; that is exactly what i get normally (11.5-12.5 in city).
do not worry about the wooly material, it is bound to deteriorate with time and is mainly for sound insulation and to reduce rattling. if you are going for ICE change, get your doors damped. ICE setup for my OHC is: Focal Access 165A1 components, Illusion Electra coaxials, Powerbass 400.4 AMP, Noisekill Damping, Pioneer 3490 HU.

Hey let me know wht price you get for your gem and the make year , model and kms. I will probably be putting up mine on the block too. This will be a good indication of the price to expect
Seems OHC is losing charm in the following with frequent niggles and issues.
Honda cars are quite sensitive to aging. Toyota being from the japanese stable too lives a long life (including all parts) with OE spares available easily at competent prices.
I guess costly upkeep is discouraging the owners to part away with the OHCs now.
Guys pls advise on some reasonably priced brake pads. need to change mine. my drive is purely in city traffic for about 20kms per day. hence looking for "regular" stuff.
also is there any way to overhaul a clutch ? my mech said it can only be replaced and there is nothing called overhauling. as such my clutch is going strong at 95k but just want to refurbish it ( if possible ) to make it feel nicer
Thanks !
Nissin Pads are the best. I didnt get Nissin but got Honda Brake pads in a box which has a red honda label. Cost me some 350 bucks i think a few months back. My running is also hardly 100 kms a week and those pads are working very well.

Nissin are OE pads for the OHC iirc. As Desmo said earlier, they're your best shot.
Regarding the clutch, i dont think theres any overhaul or adjustment possible.. cos even my mechanic said he has to replace it.. over 79k on the odo for me with a very sticky shift right now.
Exceedy clutch kit for the OHC was around 3k or so last i checked.

Excedy Clutch+Pressure Plate+Bearing is 4200 bucks + labour.
Honda Original Clutch Cable is very difficult to find - costs around 1800 bucks; aftermarket ones are available for 450.
Update: Got a new radiator fixed as the old was leaking and also got new mud flaps.
Radiator - 3400 (not Honda OEM as thats very difficult to source plus costs more than 3 times of what i got)
Mud Flaps - 220
Labour - 400
Parts sourced from Shetty Motors. Fitting done at our friendly BHPian V12's garage at Versova, Swastik Motors.
Next job - Check on engine compression and improve power in stock form.

Pranavt mentioned getting the Compression test done again and check for leakages in cylinders / valves and if required change rings and do something called as 'hone' which i am unaware of till now :). So lets see how it goes.
What i meant by improving power is to be read as regaining the lost power. :)

Sounds good...do keep us posted!
Lotsa action keeps the OHC Mumbai chapter happening!
Friends I am having some issues lately
1. As I press the throttle hard there is slight whistle sound from TB
2. The car doesn't get thrust on flooring the paddle and gets jerky perhaps and not accelerating as it used to. (I think the mixture is getting rich?)
What could be the reason? ( please: don't say TB replacement )
3. I am looking to try for a oil change with a brand change in mind.
Currently using Castrol Magnatec, contemplating over Shell Helix HX5 and Mobil Super 1000. No synthetics.
Can I get reviews on these two oils?
4. My front shocks (installed an year back, TRW make and now regret for not going for gabriel) behaving too hard. Feel the hit and the front of the car really gets the shock in potholes.
Is there anyway I can make the front suspension softer?
This is a picture of the passenger side of my City. The reason I put this pic up here is to show the amount of rust on the doors. The decision I need to make is whether to change the front and rear door and replace them with second hand doors from cst or elsewhere. Or if I should get them reprinted. The cost to repaint is around 2000 rupees per door. If I do go ahead it will be done only after the monsoons. Danlalan and ksmvtec had shown me one guy who I might possibly go to after the monsoons.
I plan on keeping her for at least two more years.
