Hello friends
an advice needed
My safari is new under 5k km done. i had my first service done ay 1500km at that point the engine oil was normal level
after that i have driven the car for almost 2200km [4200 now] and carelessly never checked oil levels. [all city driving bumber to bumper traffic with max of 1 - 3 gear regular shifting and with ac]
yesterday i had to go out station on short notice and when i checked the oil level at gas station it showed min level
the guy checked in when the engine was on idle. so i went to another gas station let the car stop for 5 mins and checked again. it showed the same level
the guy told me that atleast i may require 3 lts of oil
i have checked underhood every day and there are no oil leaks
plus the car is also running with full ac on bumber to bumber traffic at optimum temp [needle at middle]
however the car was returning a mileage of like 9km/l in city which i thought was par
my question
1>is it normal for safari to consume that much oil in 4200km
2>should i check again in morning and reconfirm
3>can i undertake a long travel or should i show to service center
i was planning to give it for 2nd service after this trip as i would complete 5k
pls advice asap

No. Absolutely not. Looks like in your last service, TASS mechanic (may be a rookie one) didn't follow the correct procedure of refilling and might have filled less quantity of oil. Observe the morning level, after overnight parking and top up yourself- use correct grade (and brand, if possible) oil. Watch it for next several 1000s of kms now.

The right side front suspension outside is kind of 'wet'. I don't think I noticed it earlier. I got my car checked recently and they did not recommend any changes though.
There is no noise when I go over uneven roads or bumps.
Please advise.

It is not normal for a new engine to consume so much oil. Most likely the technician didn't put sufficient oil when oil was changed. Have it topped up at the same dealer and verify the level and you can check after another 1000 odd kms to see if oil has declined.

Check fir any leakages on the engine and near the Oil filter using a flashlight. Check in the morning anf top up, keep a watch every 2 weeks, if it goes down again within 2 weeks, there's a leak.

Did they remove the wheel and checked, if not, ask them to do it again, be careful of brake oil leakages, it can make your brakes ineffective.
Thanks for the information. No, they did not remove the wheels. But brake oil level is normal. I will get it checked soon.
I took the car to a local service station today for oil change. They diagnosed the 'wetness' problem to be a minor leakage of power steering oil. They advised me to change the power steering box seals in the next service as nothing is major now. Estimated cost 3k.
My Safari is due for second service (infact late as she is at ~5900kms now) and I plan to take her to KHT or Concorde this week.
No major complaints. Have been planning to get engine oil changed this time as it wasn't changed during 1500km service.. Question is, is it a good idea to not get the engine oil changed at the TASS but after the service get it changed myself at some garage outside? Will that affect warranty by any chance? Is there a better engine oil (not synthetic) that I can buy outside and fill than what the TASS fills (Do they use Castrol GTX at TASS?)
And also, is Concorde Hosur Road one as competent as the Concorde Mysore road one? The Mysore road is too far for me but can manage to go to Hosur road Concorde. Planning to try Concorde this time.

Dont even think of getting the oil changed outside TASS as it will create warranty claim issues. I think TASS has GTD/GTX and Mobil 1. You can choose either as per your wish. I recommend to stick regular oil rather than synth and maintain a cycle of 7500 kms.

Both are equally competent, depends upon your comfort with each Service advisor. If you goto Hosur road service center today you might catch Shafiq( TATA Bangalore CS) and Ashwin(TATA Safari expert) working on another Safari with Gasping issue.
Hi guys,
Im on a South tour. While driving thru the forest road thru Valparai over bad roads yesterday, Safari went thru a pothole. Soon thereafter, the steering play increased - meaning, i need to turn the steering more in order to get the wheels to turn(like understeer).
There is no major problem while driving and Ive driven about 170 kms since(of which 100+kms was all twisting ghat sections) and reached Coimbatore, but Im concerned about the increased steering turn since I have about 2000kms more of my trip left to complete. I will be visiting a Tata workshop tomm. Please advise urgently on the following;
1. Good TASS in Coimbatore.
2. What could be the cause of understeer.

Update:
TAFE is the TASS i visited in Coimbatore. The service manager and his entire team were very helpful. Vehicle was thoroughly checked, found no anomalies with the steering and suspension, one bolt from the bottom skid plate found missing and was promptly fixed.
A thorough look thru the entire mechanical components was done to verify and vehicle was released in one hour.
Wonderful experience.

Regarding the Temp Needle not coming up, I too faced the same issue and while on the first service got the Transducer replaced, It is nothing but a small resistance placed near the engine and the air pump (used to pump out air when vehicle goes out of fuel) in the engine bay. TASS would change it under warranty, After almost 2 months of change, the needle is working perfect.
Regarding the usual Heart beat missing, mine was also missing and I got the ECU remapped in first service and since then, it has driven around 3000 Kms in 2 approx months and except some rare occasions, I have not felt the missing.
The beast is serving me well, only below minor issues which are probably inherent and me being too busy with my office not being able to tend to them. If someone can suggest,
1. Steering seems to have a lot of play while the engine is switched off.
2. Front Right Passenger window rattles when the Glass is open, else it is fine.
3. The rear child seats rattle while they are open, in closed position, then again seem fine.
4. There are some more minor rattles present other than the above 2 which I am yet to identify.
5. It is a fact that in Hydraulic Power Steerings, there is a Hiss sound at lock positions, Just wanted to check whether we can use lock to lock turns or just stop at the position where the hissing starts.
6. The Brakes are a tad weak but looking at the weight, I have now adjusted myself, Only hitch is they are too eager to lock, even a slight miscalculation in heavy braking situation renders the vehicle sliding out.
7. The Passenger side ORVM has a very little visibility angle, probably the mirror is set way too out. Only 1/5 of it shows the vehicle.Any suggestions to correct this.
At the end, I am completely enjoying my drives in the beast, It is returning a healthy figure of about 11.5 kmpl both in city and on the highway with some spirited driving.

1. normal. When engine is off, power steering motor doesn't work.
5. Mine makes the slight hiss too. Normal
6. I find braking very good. Much better than my wagonr. Probably due to ABS + EBD.
7. I find it adequate. Used to wagonr (type-1) ORVMs. Probably you just need to adjust the angle.

My question: has anyone verified the odometer accuracy of Safari?
Yesterday I drove around my brand new VX 4x4 in city for approximately 100KMs. I have a GPS based vehicle tracking system installed in the Safari and noticed the movement it shows is 10% less than the Safari's odometer reading. The accuracy of GPS tracker has been verified earlier with other vehicles as well as Google earth.
