Received a PM from Anuj asking for a snap of the Autografix stickering on the main console of Black Storm, here it is:

The Tata Safari 2.2L Technical / Problems Thread-console1-640x480.jpg

Please note Autografix does not make the stickers for the entire false wood panels, it is available only for the centre console and a sticker for the glove box.
I paid something like 1200/- at JC road for the same about 15 months ago.
Cheers,
Hari.

Hi, Gear shift throw of my Safri is too much. I can not open side rest arms or plug in phone charging cable is 12V outlet. I tested Aria last week , it has excellent gear throw. Has anybody idea about we can use Aria's gear lever or any other gear lever to tackel this problem.

@4x4addict, yes I am getting those from a trusted shop and thank you for the concern :thumbs up.

Please find the pics below, kindly let me know if you find any difference from the OEM.

If this is true, SAFARI is no more heavy on maintenance.:D

Just Purchased the same Brake Pads (TVS Girling - Set of 4) for Rs. 1080/- from Ludhiana.
The Genuineness of the same is confirmed - since got the Dealer's reference from Brakes India Ltd Office at Gurgaon.
Shall get them installed tomorrow

Friends,

A friend of mine owns a 2.2 Dicor. His use is primarily on highways and he is quite a thrifty driver. All gear changes happen above and around 3-3500rpm.
His vehicle is 2 years old. Off late, he claims an oil consumption(oil top up) of 1 liter every 4000kms. Is this normal?

Is the oil consumption due to his driving style or is it normal for the engine to consume oil when revved hard ??
OR
Is there a problem with the engine ??

Should the engine consume any oil at all in the first place ??

He is not part of the forum and I thought experienced folks here would be able to provide a reason for the oil consumption.

Thanks,

Jay

^^^ Might be rings or pistons might have worned out. The probability of latter is less, unless the vehicle is not subjected to regular services and oil changes. Or there might be leaks also.

1) Engine should'nt consume any given amount of oil (minimalistic is an exception) at all. My Safari 2.2L kms on stock engine does'nt have this problem.

2) Yes, there is a problem this might be with leaking seals else rings and piston. It is better to get rid of this problem at it's earlier age, as most probably the rings will be changed, but if you go on this way the pistons will wore off in time. (correct me if I am wrong?)

Thanks.:)

It is highly unlikely that modern diesel engine consume this much oil. It is not normal.

Please ask him to observe the smoke from silencer. It it more blackish on color? This means there is some leak of oil in combustion chamber. He might have to do small engine work.

There is no smoke from the tail pipe even at maxx revs, while in gear and at idle?
My initial questions are because I did not see any smoke in his tailpipe after following him around for 20 kms, so im left confused.

Smoke is a sign of something amiss, but no smoke here. Also, we got the vehicle checked after opening the base protection plates, there are no signs of oil leakage from anywhere, while at idle or while running. His parking bay too is completely dry with not a drop of oil anywhere.
So im stumped. What could this be.

@mercedised > Note, this is a stock engine too. Leaking seals or worn piston rings cause incomplete combustion and hence the smoke. But there is no smoke from the tailpipe of this vehicle under all running circumstances, and note, this vehicle is driven at high revs.

The quantity of oil burning might not be enough to cause noticeable smoke from the exhaust. Ask him about the method by which he checks oil? I mean does he measures the oil-level on a flat surface and when the car is cold (all of the oil is settled in the storage-chamber).:)

Well here is how it goes:
Last month he drove 6000kms. The oil level went from the max position on the dipstick to below min, almost to the end of the dipstick. Oil level is checked in the morning after parking overnight in his apartment parking spot which is flat by all means.

AFAIK, the difference between the 'maximum mark' and the 'minimum mark' as shown by dip-stick is nearly 1.5-2 liters, this was confirmed by ACM (Safari owner on team-bhp). So, that is not much. I believe that as the per 4000kms consumption is 1 liter (approx) i.e. in every 1000kms the oil consumed is approx. 250ml thus the smoke levels will be low. The oil consumption will increase (assume per 1000kms) if this problem is not taken care of. IMO, the engine needs a little work tobe done. If not done, later on the expenses will be tough to bear on.:)

No, this is not normal.

However hard he might rev the engine, he doesn't stay at 4000r/min all day. So losing oil because the engine is revved hard may not be an issue. Plus, there would be smoke from the tail pipe, which you report there isn't.

Should the engine consume any oil at all in the first place ??
Not more than 500ml - 1 litre between oil changes.

Jayant, there are a few routes through which oil can be lost, and it's not just past the rings & pistons, though that is one route. Let me try to set out a quick list:
  1. Worn rings & pistons: Symptoms include smoke from tailpipe and compression chamber gases appearing in the sump, and coming out of the oil filler hole and dipstick tube. You report no smoke on hard revving. Check for smoke from the oil filler point. Also check for wet carbon deposits in tailpipe.
  2. Leakage: Usually happens when the engine is running. Telltale oil marks on the underside of the engine and chassis, though maybe just a few drops where the car is being parked. However, you report no such leakage.
  3. Blown head gasket: Oil mixes into the coolant (though the reverse may not happen, because oil runs under higher pressure than coolant). Check for oil floating in radiator and overflow container.
  4. Blown big end bearing oil seal: Oil leaks into clutch bell housing. Can show symptoms of clutch slippage over a period of time. May or may not show telltale oil marks around clutch housing, depending on quantity of leakage.
Please check the above and confirm if any of the above issues exist.

When I drive my car in 4wd, there is some sound coming from the front. No issues with shifting to 4H and 4L.

I don't use 4wd much. But there was no noise last time I used 4wd couple of months back.

A similar noise was there earlier when the TASS did something (cost me around Rs. 500) and the sound went off.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Yesterday I found coolant in my Safari leaked a lot and it is dropped below MIN Level of coolant reservoir. I found few droplets in my parking and while checking I found some foam type of material completely soaked with coolant inside engine bay. I did not find leaking place one first glance. It needs more thorough inspection. Tomorrow I will take it to KHT for checking and correcting problem. I am not driving it today.

I am now searching one post by tsk1979 where he reported to change the clamps of all hoses. I have to actively think and do this as factory fitted clamps are seriously damaging reliability of Safari. :Shockked:

The above symptom could be the possible cause.
1. But is it possible for over a liter of oil to disappear into the clutch bell housing.
2. What parts replacement will this require.? Will the clutch and pressure plate too have to be replaced?
3. Wont the driver get any burning oil smell while driving, if the oil enters the clutch bell housing?

It is the clamp and tube below the white reservoir or the cap.
I reported this here. Did your vehicle came back from a pressure wash recently ?

BTW MAX mark in reservoir is not what you will think it to be , It is in middle of the white tank.
