I can give his details and you can check yourself. I switched over from Concorde mainly due to poor workmanship and I used to get the car very soiled with dirt after every service. I have done some major works with him and over all it is satisfactory. Only issue is since we rely on one person we can get stuck too mainly when they fall sick or so... Sourcing original tata spares is also a pain since many don't stock. I usually take items from Concorde kudlu gate. None of other dealers really have a good stock of safari parts.
Thx
Ajith

Hi Ajith,

Many thanks for the prompt reply; apologies for acknowledging it late - I was on a long drive and vacation.

This is good information and I shall PM you for the garage details. BTW, I stay at Bannerghatta Road, near Meenakshi Mall. So, Kammanahalli would be far off for me I guess. However, going some extra distance (go extra mile in corporate terms lol:) for quality workmanship is worth anyways.

Do you also know someone who is near to my place? May be Arun himself might know and I shall check it with him after taking his details from you.

Appreciate your quick help.
Best Regards,
Sunil.

Please ask for service records and get the vehicle inspected by a mechanic. Since the vehicle has clocked more than 1.1 lakh km, make sure that no major work is pending.

Everything depends on the price. For example 1 month ago I bought 2008 2.2 L Dicor 4WD, Vx for 3.4 lakhs. It was single owner, superbly maintained with complete service records. No major works pending. So you shouldn't pay more than that for the above mentioned example.

Try to find a 2.2L Dicor... It's more refined and much better value in the longterm. It took me 6 months to find my beast. Rember, resale value for a safari after 1 lakh km is abysmal.

Regards.

A word of caution for all potential buyers of pre worshipped 2.2 liter dicors.
Please be very cautious in buying 2.2 dicors of 2007-2009 vintage. These were the worst years of Tata motors production and quality control was very low. Most vehicles of this vintage had several bugs right from the showroom and there were several recalls and part changes. Models post 2010 had matured down and failures are uncommon. If you consider buying Safaris earlier than 2010 than go for the 3 liter which had a mature engine.

I agree with your point of view. 2007-2009 safari's had many issues mostly related to poor quality control checks done at factory level. But major engine or turbo problems are rare. 3L engine is a workhorse as it is derived from tata 407/pickup but it is crude( compared to 2.2L). Also it is far more easy to procure engine parts for 2.2L engine compared to previous generation. So for me it is better to go with 140bhp engine rather than putting your money on a engine which is out production for last 8 years.

Tata Safari is synomous with niggling issues and I don't know whether older generation (2004-2007) models fared better on that aspect. Buying a used Safari is a gamble and be prepared for a roller costal ride of ownership experience.:Shockked:

While I agree that 2.2 2007 had many issues in the first year, but they were mostly because electronics and sensors, and mechanics not trained about them.

Once the initial issues were sorted about, it has been relatively trouble free journey.. I am now past almost 4 years of warranty time and there have been no major issues... Except suspension and clutch which is because of age..

In a Safari, yes. But the engine still does duty in a Xenon 3.0L and is very much in production.

hello

I have two questions

I got my car back and most work done. However i see a small vibration sound as the rpm of the car is increased. This noise was not there before I gave to TASS. Its something different. The TASS informed one injector is little bit choked but this noise is not that of the injector. Its l a noise like when air rushes pass a loose aluminium foil. I have made a small recording and hope experts can inform if this is due to silencer or some loose fitting. I got my timing belt and water pump changed FYI

How long is the shell life of an unopened engine oil can. I have 500ml Castrol CH4 oil manufacture date is 2010.

Thanks

Hi

I have given my safari for servicing yesterday. I was told that there is ECU update to be applied. I wonder what that is . I did not hear of it in any forum. Anybody who can throw light on this ?
My wish list is that this ECU update bumps up the power and torque to 150/400.

Yours is a 2014 BSIV Safari, a new version of ECU update is required, it should be done as part of the Service.

I can't make out the odd sound. May be the engine sound had drowned out the noise you are referring to.
As you have just half a liter of engine oil, you can use this oil for topping up - though Safari Dicor rarely needs topping up.

The sound seems like some loose nut or piston knock, what happens when you accelerate does it increase in the same proportions ?

@dadu
The noise increases its harshness as one accelerates or rpm increase . It goes of when rpm is steady only on acceleration it is audible

On my 2008 VX 4wd, we did a Ranthambore trip from Ahmedabad over New Years eve. Trip was good fun but a couple of small issues cropped up:

1) Thanks to all the animals on the road and hard braking instances - ABS red light came on and stayed for 15-20 mins. Went away after we stopped and restarted. Happened only once.
2) Service light would blink every now and then when we ended up getting stuck in jams. Would go away in highway cruising mode. What could be the issue? It just came back from service a week back so wasn't expecting this again so soon.

Cheers,
Adi

For the service light problem check if your brake light bulbs are fused or shorted. Also check related fuses.

I would disagree with above statements and would like to let you all know that i am driving a Jan 2008 model Safari 2.2 and run around 1.8lacs kms with regular services and running strong towards 2lac kms mark.:)

For the last 3 weeks, I'm facing a queer problem.

When I drive back home from office in the evening ( 7:00pm bangalore, with lower than usual temperatures these days ), the radiator fans ( both ) are running for the entire duration of 10kms / 45 min, once the engine is warmed to the half way mark.

The temp does not rise, but the fans keep running making a very loud noise. Fans run for atleast 3 min after I switch off the engine.

Suspecting coolant leak / evaporation, I added 2ltrs of coolant 3 weeks back, after which the problem went away, only to surface again in the past 2 days. There is obviously coolant leak somewhere but a cursory look at the engine bay did not reveal much.

I took the car to the TASS - EMM EMM Motors, today. Coolant overflow tank is empty, and there seems to be a significant deposit of white sludge in the tank. TASS is suggesting radiator overhaul and cleaning of the tank.

My question is wether anyone else has faced the issue of the white sludge deposit in the coolant tank, and if a radiator overhaul is required or a simple flush will suffice. I'm hearing of this type of sludge formation in the cooling system for the first time ( heard of this in the older Fiat/Ambys ).

Is the sludge formation due to mixing of coolant and oil ? indicating a gasket /head leak ?

thanks
Srinivas
