You also could try Prerana Motors spares warehouse on Mysore Road, couple of buildings away from Concorde Mysore Road. Helpful guys, will get you the part if they don't have it in ready stock.

I was thinking more on these lines. Initially for a Safari Storme 4x4 but since the Storme is not so cheap in the 2nd hand market, I thought of just going in for a 2.2 Dicor 4x4 and adding this type of bumpers.
Looking for your opinions on this.

Re: The Tata Safari 2.2L Technical / Problems Thread

hello
It has been 5 years for my Tata safari. Apart from problems of windshield break, rat attacks it has been great so far. Now there are some issues I would like your opinion. I recently developed a problem with HVAC where it use not to cut off making it cool than the centre mounted ac used to make crackling noise , leak, the blower used to stop than throwing air and only make noise. It was identified as the cooling coil being choked leading to blow of thermistors which need to be replaced . As i went to TASS i met one of my known service guy who told me that the car is making more vibrations so mounts need to be checked. Also since its 5 years and though my car has run only 38000 km, i often take long trips or none, the timing belt needs to be replaced or serviced as it may have dried up and may break at long runs. He said that it is not required i do now but consider it and also run car at low speeds till then. He also said that after 5-6 years i must think of overhauling the suspension.

The cost as follows he said
1>ac service 8900 [includes labor plus a ecu check as my beast throws of random lights , maybe wiring cut somewhere]
2>timing belt with addons 17000
3>suspension overhaul around 80K

I asked him what if i do exchange for new car, he said than I better not do much work as I may only get around 3.5-4 max. Mine is tata safari GX 2010

He said for 5 years my tyres are still soft [as i always park in shade] so still good enough
I can also see some rust creeping up here and there

I would like your opinion

1>Is a suspension overhaul a necessary thing for long maintenance. For current time I have just told him to do the AC and the timing belt stuff which approx total cost he has said to be 29700 [but said would be less and would see if he can get some discounts]

Your expert comments on how I should proceed. Whether its time to change the car in 1-2 years or keep it. Are there any indications of upcoming work with this aging car.

1) If you see uneven tire wear/hear suspension noise when going over potholes / if your car shakes violently when going over potholes then you need a suspension overhaul. The overall cost comes close to 15K max. including labor outside TASC. Timing belt change should not cost much if you skip to change the water pump which many guys do. I had never got the water pump of my 3.0L DICOR changed during 1.7L Kms.

2) I have 13 year old Safari TCIC and it is still going strong. There is no need to change your car if it is giving no problems.

My advice would be to take the car to some other outside mechanic and ask him to check the suspension. Also, if you have never gotten the timing belt changed, then get it changed at the earliest, if it breaks you would have to spend 15K for repairing.

A timing belt change without any addons would not cost you more than belt cost + 500 Rs labour. I recommend just get the Belt changed.

The service guy has given very stupid cost breakup, AC work should not cost more than 5K including gas refill if required, Suspension 15K maximum and Timing belt also 15-17K with all the addons replaced.

My 4x4 full suspension overhaul costs 25K at TASS and about 15K when done outside. He is trying to rip you off.
I suggest you go to an AC specialist, get dashboard removed, cleaned, and then simply refill gas. Should cost < 2000 INR.

As for timing belt and water pump, again, simple job can be done in an independent workshop. Total cost will be 7K or something.

Within 20K, your car will be as good as new. Tata Safari can give trouble once it crosses 80-90K. 40K is still okay. Just get all the rubber parts changed.

So you need to go to a good independent workshop and the get the following changed

1. All belts including timing belt (Power steering/AC)
2. Rubber hoses if they have cracks around the edges, else wait 2-3 years
3. If your wiring harness seems to be damaged, look for an accident vehicle harness. Brand new is 20K. Wiring harness cannot be repaired. I am asking you to check this because you mentioned RAT issues.
4. When you remove dashboard, you will be able to see the holes where the wires come in. If the rubber stoppers are gone, get them sealed, this is where the rats enter the cabin.
5. AC dashboard cleaning and gas refill anyways is on the cards.

20-25K you are all done with a like new vehicle

I own a 2010 EX (I'm the 2nd owner) bought in 2013 and my truck developed similar problems with AC about a month ago. I took the truck to a car AC guy, who identified the problem, almost similar to yours. Gas was leaking from near the cooling coil. I don't have the break up of the cost with me right now, but this cost me around 5K.

I changed my timing belt (@80k kms) outside TASS and this is what I had to pay

1) Timing Belt - Rs 2350
2) Idler bearing - Rs 1750
3) Adjustment bearing - Rs 1320
4) Touch Idler - Rs 785
Total - Rs 6205 + labour (I had other work completed along with this, so no split of labour cost just for timing belt work)

For both the AC and timing belt work you are looking at no more than 15K . Your TASS has a quote of 30K for just this!

Suspension should not cost you 80K for sure. Best is to take the truck to an independent mechanic, as the TASS seems to be ripping you off royally!

This list is a perfect checklist to take with you while visiting the workshop.

Re: The Tata Safari 2.2L Technical / Problems Thread

Hello
Thank you friends for your suppport

About ac

He said that the thermistors have gone kaput which prevents cutoff. The thermistors cost 3200 and there are 2 so total cost with labor of ac is around 7500
The ecu check if reqd 1400 so total 8900

For timingbelt he said
Cost of timing belt 13k (2010 dicor)
4k etc to change some parts and labor
So total 17k

So he has given an estimate of total work of above two as 29k but said should cost less than this amount. Plus i have some other work as to check locks which malfunction due to rust

Thank you about suspension tip will get it checked outside. I have no uneven tear on tures and the car is just fine on all potholes

The car is already in workshop
Should i tell him to hold timing belt change and get it done outside ?

It was mentioned that ac us sealed unit hence went to tass

Re: The Tata Safari 2.2L Technical / Problems Thread

Timing belt is good for another 2 years. So chill. Keep an eye for coolant leakage or unnecessary belt noise. Or just get the bent changed outside tass. Would be done o in less than 2k including labor

Re: The Tata Safari 2.2L Technical / Problems Thread

I had changed the timing belt at around 75,000 kms after the water pump developed a leak.

There wasn't any issue with the timing belt, as such, but with the need to change the water pump and having hit the 6th year, I reckoned it is better to do this preventive maintenance than wait it out.

And, having done it as TASS, had shelled out close to 25k.

To all folks from Bangalore,
Are there any good smaller workshops ( Non TASS) to get the beast serviced in Bangalore.

Got timing belt changed at local garage. Total cost 3k. The belt costed 2.2k and rest for labour. I also had to get my front disk cleaned. The guys told me that bearing were in good shape ( maybe coz I had those changed during the recall).

13k is a rip off! Ask him for a split of each item.

Absolutely - 17k is just too much for timing belt change. I would suggest you take the truck to any good mechanic outside of TASS (if its not late).

Even for AC, you could give to a good car A/C guy.

Hi

I have given my safari for servicing yesterday. I was told that there is ECU update to be applied. I wonder what that is . I did not hear of it in any forum. Anybody who can throw light on this ?
My wish list is that this ECU update bumps up the power and torque to 150/400.

Re: The Tata Safari 2.2L Technical / Problems Thread

After a lot of searching I managed to find a Safari 4x4 3.0 Dicor EX model. It's done 112000 Kms. It's a 2007 model and has original Tata alloys. Vehicle looks in good nick from outside and I will be doing a detailed inspection tomorrow. Any particular problem areas I need to look for?

Hello,

Please ask for service records and get the vehicle inspected by a mechanic. Since the vehicle has clocked more than 1.1 lakh km, make sure that no major work is pending.

Everything depends on the price. For example 1 month ago I bought 2008 2.2 L Dicor 4WD, Vx for 3.4 lakhs. It was single owner, superbly maintained with complete service records. No major works pending. So you shouldn't pay more than that for the above mentioned example.

Try to find a 2.2L Dicor... It's more refined and much better value in the longterm. It took me 6 months to find my beast. Rember, resale value for a safari after 1 lakh km is abysmal.

Regards.
