I think the best I have heard is when a mech told me " Sir, bubbling ho raha hai". He actually meant "Wobbling".
The best place to know at times is the place where taxis are repaired. Guys here are absolutely hands on. Ones I can remember-
Suspension spiders are Gutkha.
Not to eat but to be used.
Threading is known as atta
One mechanic i knew used to call radiator ready water
Muffler is sometimes called as tabla
Can some one tell me what does KAMANI stand for
What is meant by SUPRENSER ka full kaam karna padega, and there is one more IS KA COUNTER GAYA HAI.

Dear Sahir - 14, 28, 44, 65 and now 84 are the nominal cross sectional sizes PVC coated automotive application electrical cables. There is a cross sectional area covered by 14, 28, 44, 65, 84 strands and confirm to JIS / EEC / ECE standard. Essentially these are the sizes of wires that you see in your car. 14 is the smallest, 84 is the largest. Finolex India makes the wires which confirm to these specifications. These are sold in yellow boxes containing 25 mts of wire in each box. Hence the jargon "atthavis (28) ka wire, paisath (65) ka wire" etc. Go to any good electrician for getting relays fitted to your headlights and more often than not he will talk in this jargon. By the way, there are "govinda" and "rajesh" make wires also. These are junk. There is very little wire inside and they confirm to nothing. Now next - what is a "chidiya"? (sparrow in english) and a "gattha"? Now for the ultimate - what is "sita aur geeta"? In all my years in dealing with cars, I have come across this only once many years ago. I have never heard it since then. Believe me, its just too much. Just try. Next - what are the nicknames of mechanics in roadside garages you have come across?
Best regards,
Behram Dhabhar |
Dear Behram Ji Chidiya means spider aqnd gattha means diffrential unit

Dhabhar Sir,
Can you give the answers, thank you.
During my childhood days, whenever I go to the cycle shop to refill air,the shop keeper used to ask me "Show me the 'wall tube'",first I used to wonder what is that, only later I realized that he meant the 'Valve Tube'..
So, wall tube = valve tube..:p

Punju for Toyota??
I was once baffled when a mechanic asked for "Mublail"
Delco, bendix, cutout, crossjoint any guesses? :D
Will post more as and when I remember mech talk!
I remember once, while waiting at our tinker with a friend , we overheard a mech order spares for an amby's crown that he had just dismantled. He was like "get two of this, one of this" etc. lol:
Hasn't anybody heard "sockab"? It means the damper / shock absorber :)
Or how "gaadi" is used for everything from a car to a motorbike to a cycle.
And the weirdest (but most common) request that service advisors hear (seen first hand) : "Please increase my fuel efficiency and power, BOTH!"
The one i remember. My dad's motorcycle mechanic. He couldn't for the life of him pronounce carburetor even after my dad tried to help him but in vain.
He used to call it kabottar.
The leaf is commonly known as katta. Katta in the local lingo means wood. Further, katta in the local slang personifies a beautiful lady.:)
