Freinds,

I started this thread to share some weird terms in local language used, specially by mechanics & commercial drivers. Some are for spares & some are just terms. Please share the info you have on the same.

Identify the below spares,

1. Langot ( langoti )
eg:driver to his owner " Sait, langot phati hai, Nayi ( new ) chahiye "

2. Chillim ( the one used to smoke )
eg: " Sait, chillim purana hogaya hai "

I have heard mechanics in Calcutta use these terms:
Shockaar Jhockaar for Shock absorber
Ready water for radiator

And once a tyre shop guy in Blr apologized to me for almost forgetting to put in the 'Water Pin' (cotter pin).

What the hell are a chillum and langot?

Here's one more,

Jhulla ( swing )
eg: " Sait , left side ka peeche wala jhulla cut hogaya"

when i faced an issue with excessive vibrations in my bike, my mechanic told me that there seemed to be an issue with "Singaram bush" and he wrote it in a piece of paper for me to mention it to the service centre. Did a lot of googling and finally came to know that what he meant was the "Swing arm bush". :Frustrati

other terms

auto = phat phati.
retreading = rethreading. When i was small(I was in my 5th or 6th), My driver used to say in tamil - thirupiyum thread podanum("tires need to be threaded again) in tamil, and i used to think inside the tire there were threads.
auto = aato (tamil), oto (malyalam)
bus stop = bosh shtop(bengali)
to remove dents = dokku edukarathu (I guess people who speak tamil understand this)
exhaust pipe= eggjast pipe

langot phati hai = Silencer drum is leaking/ torn
Chillim purana = exhaust tailpipe is old

Most common: Over oiling.
What they mean is Overhauling.

Ok this is easy,
What does a mechanic mean when he says to his apprentice: 'Vicky, ek 16-17 laa' (get me a 16-17).

i guess he means he needs a spanner of size 16 and 17.
