re: Figo TDCi: Dies occasionally while downshifting! Solved: Updated firmware by Ford

guys, my friend is planning to book figo on monday. Is this issue present in the newer Figos also? is it a serious issue?

So far on this forum, Of all the Figo's, Only RGK and Jayded have this issue. And both of them own Figo TDCi. So it does not seem a common issue.

By the way, Jayded and RGK, what variant of the Figo are you guys owning?
And can i get your manufacturing dates PM'ed to me please.

This does not seem an issue with the injectors as these injectors are also doing duty in all the other Ford TDCi cars.

That's a wrong assumption to make.

To name a few BHPians who have reported the same issue in this thread.

From what I ve observed, it's pretty much a common trait/problem among all TDCi Figos. Here's one more from dhanushmenon's thread.

Hi Mustang

My Figo stalls a lot, though given my driving skills, it is probably the driver not the car.

I downshift in two situations:
  1. Controlled and on purpose - in such cases it is feet on the clutch AND brake (lightly on the latter) and shift the gears to very low (2nd or 1st depending on final speed desired). I don't losen the clutch till the speed has reached the 1st or 2nd gear range.
Since I'm still new, this doesn't always work out smooth, sometimes I release the clutch a little earlier (e.g. 2nd engaged at 30kmph coming from 4th at 60) and in such case I have experienced heavy engine braking - gets rectified if I slam the acc pedal.
Car never stalls in this kind of exercise.
  2. Sudden due to some !##%#% on the road doing something funny - in such cases a lot of time, just the brake is slammed. Again I try to maintain the sequence in 1 above. However my reflex are more tuned towards safety right now than keeping the engine running.
Car invariably stall the moment rpm falls below 600-700.
The car has never stalled on me if I could keep rpm above 1000 - even when I was doing very rude stuff (sudden braking ...). This becomes hard in braking conditions of course - but as I wrote above, I tend to downshift quickly even under such conditions and, if I need to really slow down then, release the clutch slightly and use the engine braking (while keeping the rpm high too) - this is where my car has stalled sometimes when I could not pay attention to tacho - the whole attention is on the road, clutch is engaged and speed goes too low. If I put my foot on the accelerator or I release the clutch car doesn't stall.

And all this on my less than 150km TDCi Titanium.

RGK complaiend about excess engine noise inside the cabin and they replaced the injectors for him.

I support Gemis claim.
My sincere request to you, don't let them change anything until they know for sure whats wrong with the car.
Hey captain.
I have already realized that the A.S.S. is pretty incompetent. All the troubleshooting steps were done directly by Ford this time. Hence I agreed to carry them out. Like I posted before the car died 3 times on a single day and I had to do something about it, hence took it to the A.S.S.

Thanks to DRIV3R for collating the names.

Mustang, as mentioned, several Figos have reported the same/similar issue. So it's certainly not a one-off case. Since you asked, mine is a July 2010 manufactured car (ZXi).

Anyways I got my car after exactly 1 week at the A.S.S. I collected it today morning and a whole lot of stuff was done on my car considering the car just turned 8 months today and 9,500 Km under it's belt.
In addition to the 2 injectors that were replaced, I was told that the steering rack had developed oil leak and had to be replaced. Also the timing idler pulley and belt tensioner had to be replaced since they were found to produce some kind of humming sound from the engine compartment.
But luckily, all the expenses were covered under warranty. We went on a test drive of around 40 kms with me behind the wheels and tried to replicate the issue, but it seems fine as of now. Hope it does not resurface again. Didn't notice much changes in the way the car felt after all these changes. Just felt the engine a bit loud while idling after reaching back home. Not sure if it's just a feeling because I was using a petrol car for a week now. Will confirm soon.

Here are the parts replaced and the cost involved, just for reference
  • Injector assembly → 9665*2 = 19,330/-
  • Steering rack → 7,580/-
  • Timing idler pulley assembly → 1,416/-
  • Power steering oil → 309/-
  • Bush → 350/- (4 Nos)
Total parts cost = 28,985/- approximately
All expenses were covered under warranty

Only time will tell if this has solved the issue or not. Will update this thread accordingly, cheers!

Thank God they didnt charge you for the injectors. I hope I dont see any of this happening with my car, cant afford to leave it with the service guys for long.

Moreover the kind of rush there is already with Harpreet Moti Bagh, I dont think they will have the time or the resources to pinpoint the causes if any of these issues surface.

@Mustang.101 - Which of the service centres will you recommend in NCR?

WOW thats a big expensive list of parts changed. Thank our lucky stars that everything was covered under warranty!
Something scary crossed my mind, What happens to our cars after the warranty period? Will we have to shed out Rs 28,000 for parts every now and then?
If Im not mistaken this this is the second figo undergoing injector replacement on Tbhp.

Others facing the same issue, It would be wise to wait and watch how Jays car is doing before going to the A.S.S and getting parts replaced Sorry Jay looks like your car is the guinea pig.

Its true when they say "They Don't Build Them Like They Used To "

I will recommend South City Ford Noida. I go there for my cars. A lot of Harpreet Ford guys who own ford cars also get the work done up from here.

PS - Prior service booking is mandatory.

Well well well, finally it happened yesterday, just when i posted that my FIGO is running without an issues whatsoever.

Driving back home after office, with maddening rush, I downshifted to 3rd, and the car just stalled. The car behind me came to a screeching stop (must be abusing me as well). Turned off the ignition and cranked and it started without a fuss.

@Mustang.101 - You can add another owner to the list now .

I have decided to stick to a 5k oil change cycle, and since the car has done 14k kms, I will be heading to the service centre soon. I will get injectors checked and will ask them to look for other errors as well.

OT - When i was deciding on a new car, my dear friend, Architect , had suggested to go for something other than a FORD, since I already had an F in my life - FIAT. His words were echoing in my ears for the rest of the drive back home. . But I must add that the 44k kms with my PALIO have been trouble free and contrary to the belief, the service costs are cheaper than my Wagon R.

Did any of the SA's ever recommend a firmware update to the PCM/ECU?

I was going through some old files of the mark 5 fiesta and i found this particular information about a similar kind of problem, that you guys are facing, was rectified by a simple firmware update.

The SA has never mentioned anything of that sort, all they do is to key in the VIN number and the 'CAMPAIGN' from Ford show up if that vehicle belongs to a particular lot for which the Campaign is being run.

I did not get you on this! What has VIN number and campaign got to do with the specific problem being discussed here? Did I miss anything?

Hey Mustang,
The guys at the A.S.S. appear to be hearing such an issue for the first time, let alone suggesting ECU firmware updating. If as per what you are suggesting is the problem, then wouldn't they be already aware of it?

Has such an issue ever been released as a TSB? Do you have any information on this? May be it's time to release another one for the Figos. Also it would be great if you could post more information on your findings you just mentioned.

Here is what I found from the Ford Figo facebook page where there is a similar discussion. The owner says the ECU of his car was updated

Quote:
the servicing was done today.. the service manager told its b'cos the sensor below the clutch plate sent wrong signal to ecu... (he was able to tell the sequence of events that led to it.... without me telling him) and as per him the firmware (the software that controls the electronics) has now been updated in the car...
