Ah, I dont think I will like that job. You see, most of the times the designers and others are not really given a free hand when doing things. There are a ton of restrictions and conditions and at the end you have a product that looks like the really really late night snack you rustle up at home to keep you from throwing up after slobbering in intoxicated from the wham's and bam's of the evening.

For sure. I had the guy from Sireesh come home for a demo of my vehicle (they were constantly over my back on this and I finally figured what the hell). He proceeded to give me a full demo, which I smiled quietly and acknowledged and you can plain imagine the look on his face when he finally looked into my odometer reading. He beat a hasty retreat and vanished thereafter.

And thats precisely why I chose green over white for the car. No taxi.

6000 plus kms and no first service- blasphemous! Hope you will get it done fast and also post us all with updates.

Sitting in hosur road and the first service has stalled! The bay lift has my car perched on it and the thing refuses to come back down. So all i can do now is look up and gaze. Oil consumables have worked out to a crisp 2800 bucks.

Show them your karate moves , man. That lift will suddenly start working again. :D

I waited around until they fixed the damn thing. The Works manager is a well known TBHP afficiando and thus a pal, so he came in and threw a fit.

Unlike others, I was fantastically satisfied with the 1st service at Sireesh on Hosur road. And I am a very persevering nut-job. So I am going to write a very glowing review about them on a separate thread.

You ought to look into grocers more close to home - 6k for groceries in just a month! heck, those free home deliveries aint that bad either. lol:

Firstly my apologies for not having re-visited this thread to post my experiences with respect to the engine - which a lot of you have been waiting for with bated breath. I am grateful to those who found the reviews posted so far transparent and useful in the course of purchasing their own cars. Now lets get it on.

This thread has gotten itself an awful lot of admirers. Not that I am complaining. Inspite of all the typos, rants, mudslinging, and general putting-off language.

The Scorpio story - having mustered a denizen of fans across all ages - is not very different. Inspite of all the brash ugliness, low down interiors, panel gaps, and the general drunken stupor with which it attacks delicious curves (hold on, isnt that what we men usually do anyway?), the Scorpio has managed to hold its own with Indians (and some internationals).

One reason is ofcourse the Mahindra brand. Our forefathers have sworn by it. The women swoon over Ratan Tata (and his famous Uncle Jamshedji). The men swear by the Mahindra Jeep. That is by far one vehicle which has redefined what raw, cowboy butch is all about. And young nubile teenagers dream of driving a jeep to assert their right of passage through to man-hood (sometimes even before the first set of facial hair makes an appearance).

Mahindra has been clever (or lazy depending on your perspective) to re-engineer a lot of the JEEP attributes to its line of Bolero (which ofcourse is a direct descendant of the Jeep/Armada) and more importantly to its flagship Scorpio range.

But the one thing it has re-engineered right is the Engine. The old pre-CRDE engines were tough - but maybe not all that spirited. The CRDE engines were tough and coarsely spirited. The new mHawk's can put a Gazelle to shame. How tough they are - only time will tell.

Sitting inside the car, you hardly hear the engine. There is a certain Jeepish grrrrrr which still reverberates through the cabin if your music is all the way down which pissed me off because I got the mHawk for its silent attribute. Noise from a diesel is not pleasant. From a petrol it is. Which is strange by the way. People who own diesels try to quieten the damn thing down and people who own petrols do all kinds of things to increase noise. Anywho, I am guilty of both. That said, when you increase the music a little, you hardly hear any engine noise. You open the door though and the Scorpio reminds you that she is guzzling away your gas-money.

The Scorpio, I have to say is very agile in the city. Almost Gazelle like. Its quite literally a point and shoot thing. To a large extent, barring the very annoying turbo lag (my first experience with a diesel fitted with a turbo) where you just are literally jumping on the accelerator, the thing moves like a piranha's got her tail. The very direct steering is quite a boon in the city, and so is the size of the steering wheel. The fabric along the steering wheel does not cause for your hands to slip much, but I have just been with her for a month, so lets see how that holds up.

Considering her proportions, you can quite nimbly maneuver her in tough traffic situations. The height coupled with a shorter in length than average bonnet which does not swoop down sedan'ish ensures you have tremendous view over everything. So side-stepping that annoying Alto who is sitting a little on your "free-left" lane is not a problem.

Moving up the gears quickly to almost the 4th (I like the 4th in the city, gives you some range of engine-braking control) is quite easy within a very short distance. Shifting at about 2200 RPM ensures you dont get the engine to whine too much, and shifting quick ensures the RPM does not drop below 1500 RPM (or else you run through the blasted turbo lag all over again).

Parking her in tight city spots is not a breeze owing to her size, but its not troublesome either. Because of the very tight turning radius, reasonably direct feedback from the steering and the tight body-line, this is one vehicle thats really been made for the crowded streets of India. Add electronic mirrors and you are smart.

Practically speaking, the 1st gear is great to start off in. You will want to move to second quickly because the engine starts growling beyond a certain RPM range. If you want to go slow over a breaker or a crater, then you might want to shift back to 1 again, or else risk straining the clutch to move on in 2nd. The 2nd does not have the torque built in to move on from there. The pre-CRDE engines are a different story here. Third is nice and smooth going all the way to 60 and then you want to move down to 4th and keep her there as long as traffic's not in your way. Third is also where the turbo quick is felt best and is a great stress buster in congested city roads - when you find that almost mirage-like escape route which nobody else were gifted enough to see.

I might have preferred a quick shift gear lever as opposed to the almost the size of my fore-arm lever that I have to make do with. But shifts are smooth and sure, and if you have driven a jeep, you will know that there is a certain angle in which you need to move your hand to ensure a sure and adequate shift. That same logic - whether sub-conscious or not - applies here. Especially from 2nd to 3rd - where the shift takes place towards the right corner near you. No wonder a Merc owner I know around here got himself an Automatic recently.

The suspension is reasonably pliant around the city - absorbing most things. But you dont want to be racing over a speed breaker at 40 kmph. Though anything from underneath touching the tarmac is quite remote, the experience in itself will be extremely gut wrenching. Unfortunately, the soft suspension in the city, works dead against dynamics on the highway.

Well, to end this all - do I find her good in the city? Hell yeah. She's invigorating. The old man running his china shop need not worry at all. Not one bit. The Scorpio is one smooth operator.

Great write up as usual. Can understand what you mean by the Jeepish bruteness and the right of way thing. But the above one still foxes me:Frustrati. Care to explain:).

@ red: buddy, the mHawk has turbo lag?!!! it has the least turbo lag in all the diesels in this category!
talking about pulling power, my mHawk has pulled in second gear from standstill, with a load of 5 passengers & AC set on 3-HI, try it.

@Raj I think he meant comparing with the petrols.

Umm, why would you want to do that to your Scorp / or any vehicle for that matter(pulling in second gear) ?
