No it's not. Prado and Fortuner are entirely different vehicles, based on different platforms. The only similarities are they are about the same size and they share the same block(Yes, identical power output too but torque is much higher in Prado).

This information was given to me by a Toyota dealer working for toyota since the past 20 years or so.

Performance wise they are not much diffrent.

Fortuner and Prado are very different.
Fortuner is a truck-based suv based on IMV platform which it shares with hilux pickups and innova muv.
Prado is a proper mid size suv based on j150 which shares with other suvs like 4runner.
Both drives and handles very differently.

However, fortuner and prado shares a diesel and I4 petrol engines but in different state of tune and with different gearbox(incase of AT atleast)

Talked to the toyota delaer in hyderabad and he promised fortuner delivery within 30 days from booking. I thought that bookings were closed. Anyone else have similar experience ?

Well, Nandi in bangalore said they can accept booking but said minimum 1 month for delivery. Could be 3 months also. More importantly, they said the price is likely to go up 2% or there about in Jan 2011, and that even if you book now, there is no current price lock in. One will have to pay prevailing price on delivery.

As recommended by Nilanjan, I did take another spin for 45 min on mixed roads and NH7 to check out the Fortuner. Found it comfortably driveable. Enjoyed it. Only things I didnt live were the slightly higher noise levels at higher RPMs of 2K plus, something one can live with. I was quite ok with the braking. Apparently, this TD vehicle is April 2010 and has upgraded brakes.

I doubt that the dealer is telling the truth here. The company has not yet opened the booking which means they are still not able to match the demand. So how can the dealer then deliver the car so soon? Please call toyota or counter check with another dealer before making a booking and falling in this trap.

Same here. In mumbai, i spoke to 3 dealers & all said the booking is closed & minimum waiting is 9 months.

Hi Fellas, I was promised delivery of the Fortuner last month but I changed my mind in the last moment and went for the Innova V trim. The only reason being that it didn't fit my requirement. But as soon as I was out of the showroom a few days later, the Innova hit a pothole with such pressure that I thought the suspension would have been damaged. But it turned out that the left rear tire was punctured. And it got worse when the tire couldn't be rectified properly since there is a bulge on the tire now. Even inserting a tube on to a tubeless tire spec wouldn't help. Looks like I will have to buy a new tire shy of a few days from the delivery of my new vehicle:Frustrati

My Dad who was insistent on a Fortuner was looking at me like, "I told you so!". And that was the last nail on the coffin. So much for practicality.

OT > IMO, this doesn't take away from the reliability of the Innova and the reason you bought it. Indeed, unfortunate that you had to face a major change in a brand new vehicle. From your description, it seems to be a tear on the side wall of the tyre, which is really vulnerable in a sharp edged pothole...I had a similar experience with my new mint condition Yokohama tyres on a trip - http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/tyre-a...ml#post2099335

That said, would Fortuner's Dunlops have survived the pothole...some of the other TBhp guru's can comment about that. The scenario in my head is - are potholed roads the same as off road conditions (rocks, waters, sand, etc.). Typically, you might drive a Fortuner in those conditions at much lower speeds! Potholes on an otherwise smooth road is a game of chance!

A quick question for Fortuner owners with pets:
- We have a German Shepard, and I am wondering whether he would be able to climb into the back (with the 3rd row folded up) with ease. Anyone have their dogs complain when getting into the Fortuner?

Well lamborghini, I have two dogs, A German Shepard and a Dalmatian. They easily climb into the back of our innova but, the German Shepard does have a slight problem jumping onto the back of the Truck (fortuner) 'coz of the height and the fact that i want to avoid scratches on the rear bumper , nothing that a little run up cant help.

Our Fortuner is chauffeured and used by my mother and she has been complaining that her previous car- The Endeavour was easier to get into, she claims the fortuner is higher.

So much so that I might think of getting rid of it and getting an Innova DC version. So anyone want to make me an offer on the Fortuner I can't resist? ;) Its a Thane regn-2010 April -White done 11k kms-spanking new condition.

Thanks for the responses guys. This is a point that would need considering over. At present we have the Octavia Combi which does the job well, but would need to think over this point before looking at a replacement/SUV.

Sahil, you should be able to sell the car for 1L lesser than what you paid for it, given the huge waiting period. A DC done up Innova sounds very good! You can even look at a CR-V/Outlander if you want a stock car.

My dogs love car rides. First time they got into the Fortuner, they climbed on the bumper first, and then into the back. Result: a couple of long scratches on the bumper. But not their fault - what do they care about scratches on a new, black vehicle?

Nowadays I make them run+jump in, which solves the problem.

Today's TOI says Fortuner bookings are now open. Yeti and X1 effect I think !!
