Team-BHP - Tata Nano CX

The temperature in Delhi has increased significantly over the last week resulting in full duty for the Air Con. Although the cooling is satisfactory but mileage has dropped to around 14-15KM/ltr with 70% of A C usage. I expected a bit more than that.

Vikram is surely feeling the heat and the famous Delhi summers of June with 100% humidity is still to come. My fingers are crossed.;)

Just got the tank filled upto the brim and the average i got is !3.46km/ltr. ( Total of 175 kms in 13.3 ltrs). And my first average is already done. The average is with 50% AC usage. This is worrysome as it has dropped alot.Last time i got around 16 kmpl. What could be the reason??

Just back from a 4day drive. Bangy-Ooty-Bangy.

735Kms road trip and lots of fun with the nano.

Last tankful gave the highest I have ever got. 24.6Kmpl (384Km/15.6Lts).

Interestingly this tankful was a mix of 140Kms in the ghats, rest in highway but lots of high revving at 80-90 (yeah, its HIGH for this tiny motor). I did Ooty-bangy in 4hours 30 minutes flat non stop.

Car did amazingly well for this adventure trip. Coz, I had no idea how this would perform in the Ghats. It strained to climb the masinagudi 36-killer hairpins. But, rest was a breeze.

You would be surprised to learn there are 4 nano's in Ooty. I saw 2 of them, 1 full RED and 1 the cute yellow.

There were 2 people in the car (me and wife). Luggage about 20Kgs MAX.

I somehow feel the design of the car is strongly linked to its efficiency. I did the bangy-ooty trip with less than 20% AC. Didnt need it because of the early morning drive. But because of the 'window down' effect, the drag may have increased heavily.

The return run with AC and top speeds (of this car), gave a much better result.

Can anyone comment on this point?

I also read your travelogue a little bit - what about them brakes?

Brakes fade since they are all drum. The masinagudi ghats decline is VERY demanding on brakes. After 2-3 slopes continous, I felt the braking distance increasing. So I had to ditch the 2nd and keep coming down in 1st gear more often.

If you have done this route to&fro once you can understand how demanding this strech is on any vehicle.

I agree to svsantosh here, When I had gone to Ooty via Masinagudi in October, I had to stop midway while descending and cool off the breaks of my WagonR, After stopping, I could see smoke/heat emitting from the front two tyres, hopefully, two 2 ltr bottles of water cooled the tyres and the brakes quickly,

Yes, the Masinagudi stretch is a bit demanding for brakes, however, the scenic beauty enroute is just too exciting and good to miss,

Guys, its very important to use engine braking on declines, whatever the car.

Don't ever throw water on hot brakes. You can damage your discs!

Ok if your car survived this attempt. Dont repeat, else you can easily crackup a very hot disc or the pad.

Yes Rush, in this already under-powered brake wise' car, the need for 1st was more than the 2nd. It just wouldnt stop safely in 2nd gear inclines!! I couldnt ride the brakes for long. Instead kept doing 0-10-20-25 max (1st gear full revs) - then braked completely to ~0, then started the cycle again for nearly 5kms of the steepest declines. Holding onto the brakes thru the incline only meant the fade was getting bigger and bigger.
