Coolant is for the internal circulation. It will not have any impact on the heat that is radiated from the engine. Heat shield as in Diesel Polo, could solve the problem.

You are right. If there is a PS fluid container, it is electric-hydraulic PS.
Yeah, I am going to bring this up with VW. I think all 1.6 owners should band up and insist on the heat shield especially if VW supplies this on the 1.6 sold outside India.

I looked and looked but I couldn't locate any Power Steering (PS) fluid container. I saw coolant, windscreen wiper fluid, engine oil, brake fluid, but no PS fluid. Either it is not there or else it's somewhere I couldn't see. I am planning to browse the web to find its location.

By the way, while I was trying to locate the PS fluid, I read all the notices in the engine bay and realized that pretty much everything inside is from abroad. Even the battery and the plastic coolant container are from abroad -- Now I am sure that Indian ancillary manufacturers are pretty good, maybe VW haven't been able to do a sourcing arrangement yet.

The engine was Made in ZA (just as another BHPian has titled his thread) and many components were written in Spanish, etc. Luckily, no Chinese parts.

The only Polo 1.6 petrol engine that i have come across in my search on the net has been the South Africa spec polo vivo. Everywhere else it is just the 1.6 TDI.

I could be mistaken though ...

I am just as clueless as you are Avishar. My knowledge of engines and their engineering is next to non existent

Forget outside India - These are fitted in Polo-Diesel in India. It is fitted under the bonnet. You could see it in GTO's review.

PS fluid container should be very easy to locate - if available. Knowing VW, all serviceable parts will be placed in a easily accessible position.

Luckily, no Chinese parts - I am happy to know that!

The engine is imprinted "Made in ZA", so definitely it is the South African one.

I did see one small Chinese part. Don't remember where it was though.

Now regarding the PS fluid, I searched a lot but couldn't find it. According to the web, the servo motor is encased in a small silver casing with a receptacle on top for the PS fluid. I also read somewhere that the PS fluid should never be replaced, it should only be topped up and that the PS fluid must be the one supplied by VW only.

However even though I couldn't locate the PS fluid, I believe I now have another way to confirm that the 1.6 has electro-hydraulic steering.

Thanks to Wildon's comprehensive report based on my VIN, my Polo has:
1N3 -- Speed-related variable steering assist (Servotronic)
Reading up about Servotronic, I found the following:

Quote:
Servotronic Power Steering

A servotronic system is part hydraulic and part electric. A hydraulic servo, or piston-like device is attached to the vehicle's pinion. If the servo's piston retracts, it turns the piston and the wheels in one direction; if it extends, it turns them in the other direction.

A direct electrical linkage runs from the steering wheel to the Power Steering Control System (PSCS). The PSCS judges how much force the servo will need to exert to turn the wheels as directed by the steering wheel based on the vehicle's speed. Less force is needed to turn a car's tires at low speeds than high speeds. Having determined this, the PSCS sends an electrical impulse to the servo, engaging the hydraulics and turning the wheels.

The servotronic reservoir is located right under the battery. The only thing that will be visible is a small cap. The reservoir is actually inside the front bumper but can also be accessed by removing the front LH wheel guard.

All current cars with EPS will just have a hole on the LH member under the battery.

all current Polos have only an EPS no hydraulics.

So that means even my 1.2 petrol has an Electric- Hydraulic unit. The report sent by Wildon mentions:

I will try to post some images of the location where you can find the PS fluid container. The presence of it should confirm hydraulic ps else it is eps.

Pictures of the PS Fluid holder location. Note the hole (on the bottom right through which a pipe is seen passing down) where the PS fluid holder lid was supposed to be present. So my Polo 1.6 has electronic power steering and not the hydraulic one.

I too looked and couldn't locate anything next to the battery. If the comprehensive report is somehow wrong, then I must admit that there is no Electro-Hydraulic Power Steering but only Electronic Power Steering.

Chethan, what about you? Can you check what you have because I think the diesel spec is slightly different and also because you have one of the first Polo diesels in India.

Yeah, ORR near Marathahalli -- You saw my wife. She usually drives sedately unless she is in a hurry to get home!

I am getting fuel consumption of 12.3 kmpl as per MFD owing to my wife's driving style. sadnabrina, I think this may have to do with the current climate in Bangalore as well -- AC usage is only 20% or so.

I drove the 1.6 briefly over the last couple of days. When you start it, for a brief moment (1-2 seconds) there is a clutter as if it is diesel. After that there is a hum. The engine is very refined with no vibrations inside the cabin at all.

When I drove I felt totally in control. Steering is very precise. Suspension is fantastic. You go over a pothole at speed and all you hear is a faint thud and that's it.

In between I revved the car to reach 3,500 rpm in second gear. I was thrown back into my seat. I just loved that feeling and tried it once more the next day. I am totally amazed by this car.
