That is a good idea - from Madurai, proceed via Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Kumbakonam, Mayavaram (Mayiladuthurai), Chidambaram, Cuddalore and Pondicherry to Madras. You can use the following log book to trace that route (but in reverse order, Madras-Pondy-Kumakonam-Madurai-Trivandrum). But allow for slower speeds from Thanjavur to Chidambaram.

Hi guys,

Has four laning been completed between Chennai and Trichy ?

I am planning to travel from Chennai to Tirunelveli by december end, how are the road conditions now ?

Please inform me about the latest updates on bad stretches which I have to watch out for, between the above route (Chennai to Tirunelveli) .

Is it better to start early from Chennai, say around 3:00 AM ?

Based upon your valuable inputs, I shall plan accordingly.

Thanking you all in advance.

Should be in fair condition

After my trip on the same route in May this year, recently i went in bus to nellai..Still the Villupuram-Trichy stretch is not that good and there are many stretches where work is going on....Rest of the route should be fine (if the recent rains havent done much damage)

If you plan to cover the trip with out resting in between then i think its fine starting at 3.00AM....

But if you plan to rest in between (i would suggest you to rest if you dont have a companion to drive), start from chennai by afternoon so that you can reach Trichy before night and rest there..

Happy Journey

I believe the NH-roads are laid upto the standards and guess it will not be much of a problem if the roads were fine last week.

Thirunalveli ,I got few friends from there while I was studying at coimbattur.I think the town is somewhat remote in whole of TN ? but very famous for Thirunalveli halva which is served "Hot" .
The climate in Thirunalveli is real hot?Is Palyamkotta ,the same as Thirunalveli? How many kms from Thirunalveli to Kuttaalam waterfalls.
I hope I havent asked too many questions?

You get the famous T'Veli halwa near the Nellayappan Temple. T'Veli to Kuttalam is around 50 kms, just off Tenkasi.

Visitors to Tirunelveli should not miss the famous halwa.
A lot of shops sell the halwa, but I would advise you to buy from the most famous shop which also invented this particular type of halwa.
This shop is called IRUTTU KADAI HALWA (Literally meaning halwa from the dark shop)
It is called so because it does not have a Name/Brand Name, no electricity (no neon sign boards, no lights, not even a fan).
It is around 80-90 years old selling halwa.
Without a name board you might think an outsider might find it hard to locate.
Dont worry, ask anybody in the town, you will get directions to reach this place.
The shop is located bang opposite the main Rajagopuram of the Nelliappar temple.
Only problem is, this shop is open for just a few hours, 5pm-7pm.
by 7pm the stuff is sold out & the shop shuts for the day
So guys, dont miss IRUTTU KADAI HALWA when you visit Tirunelveli

Yep the roads are in good condition.
Tindivanam-VPM-Trichy roads are maintained by GMR with some toll fare.
But the road is very nice and there's no bumps and ride very smooth.
Worth for the money spend.
Trichy-Madurai,Still some of the strech is not completed and some of them are 2 way lane. Please be cautious.
Madurai-Tirunelveli
The road is very neatly paved and you can reach your top speed without any hesitation.
Madurai-Tuticorin
I don't know exactly but heard that 4 way lane is nice and well established.
