The entire route seems to be very scenic. Let alone the destination, the road leading to it looks so much more fun.. Good going!! Enjoying every bit of it!!

Indeed!
Ladakh is a place where the road trip, the journey, is more than the destination!

Of course this is a personal view, Gentlemen, so kindly do not start bashing!

+1. Absolutely right. The only thing we need to go to Delhi and then take the car from there to these places. But...if you are determined to do, then anything is possile.

You need the right spirit man.One thing I will never forget is on our way back we saw a maruti 800 strugling its way up near Darch (beyond Keylong). There were two men in it. And one of them was a handicap- on cruches- had polio. This was his second trip on this rout. Now thats SPRIT and I can never forget that scene that day! Once you have decided nothing will come your way for sure.
Absolutely agree about with you Ravi that its all about the spirit.
And Hats Off!!! to those two gentleman. That's such a true example of "Never Say Die" attitude.

No offences meantm when there is a will there's a way. Me and my wife had been planning to do Leh for a long time. Its like a dream that we want to fulfill. Have realised the Phase-I of it by buying the right vehicle. Phase-II which is just completion of the jOURNEY, is remaining, which again is going to get done very soon. (tsk I hope we are on for Mid August)

Agree to that statement. My dad used posted in Poonch and we used to travel every 3-4 months to meet him. And believe me, It was a different scenario everytime when we went. It is definitely in the travel.

As a matter of fact offlate lot of travels of mine have been only about the journey rather than just the destination
e.g: Hampi - Reached 24 Hours late, stayed one night, out in the morning.
Coorg - Travelled 2000 kms to stay about 30 hours.

Not that Wifey is complaning

Well... we did Blr - Leh -Blr in 22days in 2005 by road with a meager expense of 56k in total that too for 4 people. (with lots of help from my cousin who is in Army)

We did Blr-Nagpur-Delhi-manali-sarchu-leh-pengongtso-khardungla-Kargil-Srinagar-Amritsar-delhi-blr,
we covered 8000kms & this travelogue took me back in time.
Its the place to see in India, My most memorable trip till date..

Superb travelogue... Keep going.

First one at pengongtso early morning at 5.30am & second is Leh city

Day Four: Kargil to Leh

During the course of that fortnight, as I'd mentioned, we traversed varied terrain - bad roads, no roads, good roads LOL. However, if you ask us individually or collectively as to which we'd classify as our worst drive, we'd say "Kargil-Leh" without blinking an eyelid!

Why? Maybe it was more to do with expectations. We were at the fag end of our first leg & everyone had given us an impression that except for a few short stretches where there was road widening going on, it would be a breezy run. No way it was, LOL!!!! I think we just got two really good stretches of black tarmac top - Hangroo Loops (just before Lamayuru) and then the final approach to Leh. The reast of it was irritating & frustrating - loose stones, dust & boulders. Even our Kargil host was incorrect when he told me that it was like a Runway - at the end of the day, we realized that maybe he'd meant "Run Away"!

Anyway, to get on with the story, it was sheer bliss to get up late & leave late - A couple of early morning clicks from the balcony & we were then ready for our Breakfast & departure

Better Leh'd than Never - a 3,004 kms round trip of a lifetime!-img_2371.jpg

It was a 9.30 am start, the latest that we'd done on the entire trip & after saying our Goodbyes to our gracious Host Mr Iqbal, we were off. The points to see enroute were - Mulbek (huge statue of Maitreya), Namika La (second pass on this woute after Zoji La), Fotu La (highest point on Srinagar-Leh road), Lamayuru (monastery), Nimmu (confluence of Indus & Zanskar rivers) & Magnetic Hill.

First stop 4 kms down the road was to tank up Diesel. Total Distance travelled - 196.2 kms, Diesel filled - 22.4 ltrs, Mileage obtained - 8.76 kmpl. The Landscape around us was pretty

Better Leh'd than Never - a 3,004 kms round trip of a lifetime!-img_2378.jpg

and then we came across these (interesting to say the least)

It was hard to believe that these were natural formations & a result of erosion over the years! It was almost like we'd discovered the remains of forgotten civilizations!

Progress wasn't really great & we crossed Mulbek about an hour & a half later

The pics will give you an idea of the scarcity of good tarmac top on this section

and we carried on - I loved the color of the surroundings & the sky was so blue but I remained uunimpressed with the road surfaces

The highest point on this road - Fotu La. It was so windy that it was almost impossible to keep one's balance & click at the same tiime. The family remained in the car while I managed a few pics. Note how clean The Beast is looking

Just as I thought! Office work is boring... What makes life interesting is sharing pics of such a fantastic trip! Suman, you ought to put up a notice saying "I DON'T POST TO t-bhp ON SUNDAYS."

Trip of a lifetime indeed... I'd do it every year if I could afford it!
