Day 3, November 29th 2009

Ooty - Fern Hill - M.Palada (Tribal Museum) - Emerald Dam - Avalanche Lake - Avalanche Dam (Canada Dam) - Avalanche - M.Palada - Fern Hill Palace - Kuruthukuzhy - Fern Hill - M. Palada - Love Dale - Ketty - Ooty (121 Kms)

Again we woke upto a late morning.

Today even my wife wanted to come out for sight seeing. Hence we decided that we go to the best place that we cherished from our 2006 trip - The Emerald and Avalanche lake.

In 2006 we visited Avalanche lake by 18:30PM and drove further onwards through the thick forests, reached a Pumphouse, some dams, numerous hairpins and Parsons valley before we reached Ooty by 20.00PM. That was one scary adventure, which led us to buy a GPS immediately. I'll tell about those incidents after this log.

We quickly reffered our notes and decided on Tribal Museum, Avalanche Lake and Fern Hill Palace Hotel for Lunch. All in the same route. Last time we drove through Parsons valley in the night, this time since we did not have permissions we decided to go till Kuruthukuzhy to see the Guinnes plantation site. So a plan was made and we hit the roads after breakfast by 09:45AM.

Tribal Museum

Tribal Research Center has a nice museum which exhibits certain cultural items from several tribes. The museum also has a good collection of photographs of the tribals.

This museum is only open from Mondays to Fridays from 10AM to 5PM. The day we went was a Sunday. We just drove to the main office. An officer was there, on request he obliged to open the museum and explain the items to us. I just cannot believe that the museum is going to be opened on its holiday just for us to see. Ooty and the people here rocks.

The officer opened the checkpost and joined us in the car and we drove up about a kilometer and reached the museum. From outside it looks very modest but inside it had a lot of collections.

Tribal Museum

The first floor had a lot of Photographs and paintings.

After closing the museum, the officer collected a lot of yellow flowers which felt like plastic to touch and gave it to my younger one. The elder one had already collected some plants with roots of the same for our garden. Seeing this the officer got us some pine trees to plant.

Now I am in a dilemma. Already my garden started looking like a forest with Apple trees from Apple valley in Munnar, Orange trees and Gooseberry trees from Yercaud, Sapota and Pomegranate from hometown, Coconut trees from Coimbatore, around 3 varieties of mango trees, grape vines, passion fruits, pepper vines, Neem tree, you name it, it is there - but the enthusiasm is only till you plant - later it just grows and grows.

We left Tribal Museum by 11:15AM - An hour of visit, thanking the officer for such a wonderful explanation of the exhibits and especially for allowing us on a Sunday. From him I came to know that he was surprised that we had interests in knowing about all these, and almost all visitors are foreigners.

Regarding names,
Muram (முரம்) is "Winnow" in english. It is used to separate the chaff from (grain) by means of a current of air. Cherattai - is coconut shell.

They are similar in Tamil and Malayalam.

So you studied at Good Sheperds. :)
