Day trip to the Beautiful Grasslands of Bangalore

Ever since i saw photos of this place on my friends PC, i wanted to go there too. Soon, i learnt that this is the last surviving grasslands of Bangalore. Its a great picnic spot. With a few spots in and around this place, it completes a satisfactory day trip out of Bangalore.

In and around this place.

1. Heserghatta lake. In all its glory, a very good place to spot migratory birds. now its all dried up and looks like a drain.
2. Byalkere peacock reserve. Shows itself up in the maps but haven't visited this place. But this blog throws up some interesting finds.
3. Nrityagram. A gurukul for Indian classical dances.
4. Grasslands.

Glimpses of the only surviving grass lands of Bangalore.
Quality of photographs not so good.

I Have been slogging at work for the last 3 months and this is the only Sunday i had some respite. Thanks to Christmas.

Initially, The plan is to pack some biryani and head out to the nearest tree by the road side, have lunch in the open and head back home. We took the NICE road at electronic city not knowing exactly where to exit. At least we can drive in peace till we find that elusive tree. After a cool 30 kms drive, we found a decent place to park and have lunch.

Lunch Time on NICE road

After we finished lunch, we decided to drive to the lake.
Another 30 Kms drive took us thru narrow but well tarred roads thru small villages and when we arrived at the lake, it was pure disappointment. The lake had dried up and the left over water looks like drainage. On the maps, the size of the lake is quiet huge.

A 10 minute drive from here, took us to this vast open grasslands. Take right towards the Our Native Village resort after the govt film studio. Since the last time i have seen some team-bhp travelogues to this place, the grass had grown in size and looks very beautiful now.

A single red mud road that runs across the vast expanse had a magical effect on me. At first it looks like a large field of grass. After a few minutes, the beauty of the place takes over. Especially on a day with cool breeze and a clear blue sky, there is some thing magical about this place. It looks picture perfect. Red soil, golden grass and blue sky and green trees in the horizon will bring out the photographer in anyone.

A few photographs

One can spend the whole day lazing in the woods.
Nrityagram is a stones throw away from this place.

Which is the route you took to reach this place?
Did you branch off from Nelamangala?

The panorama were shot using a Samsung phone. You can clearly see the stitch marks on them. Also, i couldnt capture the real beauty of the place with my cam.

The nice road ends somewhere halfway between Nelamangala and Heserghatta Road. Take the ramp towards the city and stay on the service road for atleast 3 kms. After IBP on your left hand side, take left onto Heserghatta road.

Ask for heserghatta village for directions. Just before the village, take right towards the lake and film Studio. half km after the govt film studio, take right onto the mudroad ( towards Our Native Village ).

Truly said, none of my colleagues beleived that it was shot around Bangalore.

Nice Location & Nicer Drive,

Would often drive to Hesergatta lake Enter from Tumkure road & exit from Dodabellapur side, but since the road / fly over work started on Tumkure road, never been to it, guess its time to go now. Thanks for sharing.

Cheers
Sunil

@Kittigaadu.
If your bad photos are like this, then how will your good photos be saar?
Yes, the stitching is evident as you've also flattened a bit of the ground along the horizon! But then what a spell binding place you have unearthed!

@Kolimuttai. Terrific handle you have. Reminds me of school days.

Re: Day trip to the Beautiful Grasslands of Bangalore

This place is awesome.

First discovered by our "Lukeskywalker" and later on explored by Rjstyles.

I was so smitten by this place, had gone there with Hari and Riju, and second time along Jaggu,Rudrasen for my Bug and Bus photoshoot.

Its a great place for a simple picnic.

Re: Day trip to the Beautiful Grasslands of Bangalore

Hey Kitti nice pics and ofcos a nice JEEP, it always has been

Have been to this place around 7yrs back, when the water was still there, the grass was greener and the birds had arrived. Didnt have the JEEP then, had to reach the spot on our enfields...and yeah it was a good outing. But then again, its a spot for a quick picnic and not somewhere you wana go if you are a ardent Jeeper in my pure opinion coz its way too laid back for thrill seekers This is just my opinion. Having said that this place has a sense of divinity to it, the moment one reaches there he there would be a sense of "Huuuuuh" engulfing him!!!

Re: Day trip to the Beautiful Grasslands of Bangalore

Pavan,
I am spellbound by the composition and stance of those beauties in the place. Truly amazing.
And rightly said. Its more of a picnic spot than a jeep thrill terrain.

The place connects to Doddaballapur road and that too is tarred. mud road exists but mostly flattened by tractors.

This season, with more grass, blue skies and wind chill, the place is truly engulfing with that "Huuuuuh" feeling

Regards,
Krishna.

Re: Day trip to the Beautiful Grasslands of Bangalore

So near to Bangalore? I don't believe!!! Must visit place. May be during the rains.

One question, during rain can a normal car venture this place?

BTW, those sexy vehicles looks sexier in that background, apart from the auto

Stunning captures there! After seeing those, I had been wanting to go there for sometime. Now I realized, there is way to reach this place from Nelamangala via the Doddaballapur state highway! Will try that out.
