Re: Mercedes W123 240D - Yet another addition to the family

Updates from 10-Aug -

Patchwork on the floor pans is in progress.

Initially contemplated ordering new floor pans from Klokkerholm, but after my recent experience with ordering spares via the internet, decided not to proceed

The vacuum plumbing is a mess - no wonder central locking doesn't work.

No Hirschmann power antenna could be located, will try sourcing an after market antenna later.

Sanding off paint from the body didn't work, paint stripper seems to be working much better.

The effort you have done so far for the restoration is excellent. Can you please post more photos if you are completely done with the restoration ?

Do make a diagram of the vacuum plumbing if you can, as I have a feeling this engine shares a similar vacuum diagram with my 250D w124 and I cant seem to the the vacuum diagram for that.

Also, I am from Pune and will be visiting for a few days (based now in Bahrain) in the beginning of October, I could find a working original Hirschman for you and bring it if you wanted one.

Also the steering is not original. Do you intend to source an original one?

Lemme know what spares you may need, and will try to source them for you here from the scrap yards.

Work is presently on hold as Javed is busy attending to a sudden increase in workload. Meanwhile tried my hand at refurbishing the wooden panelling. It's pending a round of clear coat.

I will attempt doing so. BTW, here's a schematic available in public domain which may help.

To add, this vacuum diagram looks spot on. I have a very similar diagram for my petrol W123. Of course, no vacuum pump. Vacuum is derived from the hose leading to the brake booster, i.e. Engine inlet pressure. my headlights can be adjusted at those are vacuum operated.

Overall this system has proven to be very reliable. The rubbers on the piston assembly driver the doors does perish over time. There are two versions to my knowledge. Both from Bosch and for both spares are still available from Mercedes and or Bosch. If you have access to them, do a proper visual inspection to see if you can spot any sign of wear and tear. Vacuum leaks can be a bit of a pain to trouble shoot. You have to plug of the various lines, one by one, build vacuum, watch if the vacuum holds etc. untill you find the culprit. Sometimes you can take a pretty good estimated guess at which one is going bad. Just observe which one locks last or the most slowly!

Good luck

Jeroen

The vacuum diagram posted is correct however for the lock and unlock system only.
I am not sure, but i was assuming that the first year 1986 base model w124 (which I have) would have the same vacuum system as a late years w123 model. This vacuum diagram doesn't have the lines for the engine stop valve or the injector pump and engine thermostat.

I'd attribute the differences to the fact that the W124 is a generation newer.

Re: Mercedes W123 240D - Yet another addition to the family

Updates as of 07-Sep-17 -

Feeroz the denter has left for his home town yet again. Hence, there's no progress over the past week.

The spare wheel well has been attended to (partially).

Re: Mercedes W123 240D - Yet another addition to the family

As Feeroz's availability remains uncertain, have asked Javed to look for alternatives.

Meanwhile, delivered the seats to the upholsterer yesterday.

Would be upgrading from fabric to art deco leather as sourcing MBTex is a near impossible task (besides being prohibitively expensive).

Pictures would be shared in due course.

Thank you Sir for the regular updates. This will serve as a good reference for future restorations. Would love to check out your car when I am in Pune.

Re: Mercedes W123 240D - Yet another addition to the family

Managed to organise a replacement for Feeroz, the tinkerer (who seems to have put on a disappearing act).

Work has resumed today.

Much of it will involve rectifying the shoddy work carried out earlier..

Meanwhile, spares continue arrive. Got rid of a bunch of cartons yesterday..

Also came across a ponton undergoing repairs to correct major accident damage. Would love to meet up with the owner someday.

Poor Ponton! Did something fall on it? Was it a running car?
