Re: Vintage Overlanding! Driving Cross-Country back in the day

Not a very old story but a fascinating one.

Shared by the brownhistory Instagram page

Original story and picture credit : Asad Zaidi via brownhistory

Quote:
"Abba bought this Mitsubishi in 1982 in Kuwait, a couple of months before I was born. In 1986, we went to Karbala and Najaf in this car and then to Mecca and Medina in 1987. ⁣We were in Kuwait in August 1990 when Iraq invaded, leaving everyone in panic. People immediately tried to escape, but had hard time at the border. However, Abba didn't take a chance and we stayed back in Kuwait for the next two months. We faced it all-- standing in line for bread, hearing live machine gun fire, watching scud missiles falling with our own naked eyes. ⁣

Two months later, after having long meetings everyday, Abba and his friends decided to go to India by road. We left our home in Kuwait on 28th of September, 1990. Since Iran-Iraq border was still sealed after their prolonged war for 8 years that ended in 1988, we had to travel all the way to Turkey. ⁣

From Turkey, we traveled to Iran, visiting Tehran and Mashhad, then entered Pakistan at Quetta, and finally reached India via Wagah border, Punjab. We reached Delhi on 26th of October, 1990, covering a little less than 10,000 kms. ⁣

I still think about that drive sometimes. What an amazing feat it was for my Abba, driving in to the unknown with his wife and two young kids.⁣

P.S.⁣

1. No, we didn't sell the car.⁣
2. First pic was clicked in Kuwait in 1982. Second pic was clicked at my grandfather's place in India in 2015. ⁣
3. I am writing a book on it." - submitted by @asadhaiderzaidi ⁣

Re: Vintage Overlanding! Driving Cross-Country back in the day

Ralph Alger Bagnold, (3 April 1896 – 28 May 1990) was an English 20th-century desert explorer, geologist and soldier. In 1932 he staged the first recorded East-to-West crossing of the Libyan Desert.

More about him here and here

From Kamal Expedition: In the Footsteps of the Prince
Quote:
Ralph Bagnold was stationed in India and he drove his truck all the way from India to Egypt. Some years ago some empty fuel tins were found, which originated from India. Were they left there by Bagnold? Bagnold had to abandon his car at Gebel Uweinat near Rad al Abd, an isolated mountan. It was brought back by Pat Clayton.
Source for the below, here
Quote:
The challenge of driving Model-T Fords for the whole length of Sinai was succeeded by that of driving a Ford truck from India to Egypt, via the Baluchistan Desert, Persia, and the Syrian Desert.

I remember seeing this trip used to advertise either the Contessa itself or some tyre or oil brand maybe. Will share once I find it.

Re: Vintage Overlanding! Driving Cross-Country back in the day

More details of K.M Romani's adventure
Quote:
Here are the details how he traveled round the world. It was a pretty long adventurous story so I will sum it up the best I can.

On the 17th of May, 1938 he picked his travel gear on his Harley Davidson motorcycle and set out on a World tour

He went back to his hometown in Iran. His Grandmother died and his farmland was taken over by his cousin

He moved along and traveled through Iraq, Syria, Damascus, to Egypt

He crossed the har desserts of Sinhai and ventured through the thick forests of African jungles. He encountered lions and bears snake bites and hum shots but continued his journey.

He stopped by at Jerusalem then moved along. While visiting the “Ruins of Petra”, his motorcycle fell over the cliff and side car was completely smashed. With 7 broken ribs, arms and elbows, he rested in hospital for a few months and then continued his journey towards Europe. In Germany he met an astrologer, RoxRoy. On his journeys, he described on how he saw ships with Jews arriving in Tel Aviv.

He returned to India in April of 1940 after covering 40,000 aims all in one piece.
