This morning's Indian Express and Times of India both carried a picture of a dark green Dodge/Fargo/PAL truck with a policeman. I see the truck regularly, didn't know it was a police vehicle. If I remember right, the regn was MHJ 5212. Note the period sunvisor, a rarity to see today. The regn. dates to 1967, Poona.

Hey what a lovely blast from the past ! I remember seeing these Police vehicles pretty regularly, way back in my school days.. In fact one does see them in 70's Hindi movies, in a dark blue shade (with cops in dark blue uniforms, with short pants nonetheless !)

These were known as Fargo Rocket !

I heard someone mention military CMP's. Last year i saw one freshly auctioned one in mayapuri, although it disappeared the next time i went there. I know, i double checked because i was doubtful if the army would auction the truck after such a long time.

are those Fargo's still used by Pune Police? They would be the only ones to use them in government service in India i feel.

This is the only one Ive seen still in service, though Im sure some smaller cities may still have a couple in service.

I believe this is the same one. Is dumped at the local Electricity Board Housing colony.

Here, I saw a nissan recovery van still used. let me try if I can get a snap tomorrow and thanks for the thread.

Do try and take some pics. of these ASAP. They may just disappear even from there one fine day! I havent seen any on/off roads even in Madras, where they were as common as dirt, when I visited last month! I did take pics. of the last ones I got to see around 2002 (non-digital so will have to wait for uploading them.)

Happened to see a pic of a Tempo (haven't seen one in many years now) in a Travelblog of someones, of which the link I am posting below the pic. There is also a mention in one of the comments that these tempos are aplenty in the state of MP and that they are a nuisance as such. Anyone want to undertake the job of ridding the roads of them and adding them to their collection?

Yeah Im told they are quite common in those areas. Would love to have an original two stroker. I wonder if a single petrol engine survives in India.

Thats a Hanseet Tempo!! There are SEVERAL in and near Indore when i visited last, Though i doubt if they have original engines. Will take pictures when i go in February. These are a Sight to see on the road..:D

Lots of these are also still plying in interior parts of UP. You guys want pics?
