It cost a wee bit but I don't recall how much. And I must say because it was a special cargo consignment the Indian Airlines team was customer centric and efficient.
Wow! I thought the costs were absurdly high and limited to cases like these:

The cost was about 2x to 3x more expensive than sending the car on a truck. So expensive but not so much either. And for me in 1994 that Premier Padmini was very precious
Today none of the domestic aircraft have that capacity in terms of hold volume and cargo door size.

Re: History of Cars in India

The first batch of Ambassadors to be exported were 25 cars in 1976 to George Town, Guiana. I wonder if any survive.

That was quick - great find! It does appear to be a Mark 2 with the park light portion cut off. The front bumper is an earlier unit, probably replaced at some time from a Morris Oxford (which seems to have been popular there).

Found another shot here

Re: History of Cars in India

This piece was posted on facebook some weeks back, talking of a company called Indomobile for the manufacture of cars in 1936. Over to the experts to tell us more.

Given the timing (1936) of Karl's article, this is not likely to be the same enterprise. Interesting account / history though!

The Blue Streak referred to is the "Doc" car.

Re: History of Cars in India

Here is a lovely picture of Jawas being crated for export. On one crate we see boxes stamped New Delhi and Bombay. I assume this from before Indian assembly started. Does anyone know the exact dates?

A lovely image of the Fiat 1100 D being completed on the Premier Automobiles assembly line in Kurla, Mumbai.

While the image isn't dated, looking at the model details we can assume it is between 1965 and 67.

Re: History of Cars in India

An interesting newspaper clipping from my dad's files, which he cut out as a young boy in the 1960s.
