Re: Indian Motor Sport pre 1965

107 stunning images from the lot have been uploaded by Melanie Webb of her father's motorsports exploits

https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?...7142026&type=1

Some of the images that caught my eye

Lineup of Lambrettas

Norton Manx

Gondal Mercedes 300SL

Indian Motor Sport pre 1965-300.jpg

Early Porsche 356 - probably the ex Sawantwadi car

Indian Motor Sport pre 1965-porsche.jpg

We recognise the Lancia Flaminia amongst others.

Indian Motor Sport pre 1965-lancia.jpg

What a varied lineup - exotic Italians and a stately Riley rubbing shoulders with specials and local Ambys and even a flimsy Austin.

Notice the Mark VI Bently in the back?

An early Special

Re: Indian Motor Sport pre 1965

Though 1968, I found this in a Premier Automobile Magazine of 1968. Unfortunately they don't show his car, but this pic of Dr. Rossi was to be seen.
Though it is an in house magazine, this publication did carry quite a lot of ads, beyond Premier cars and trucks. Some suppliers also placed ads. Funnily a piston manufacturer placed an ad showing an Amby.

Re: Indian Motor Sport pre 1965

I am not sure if this has been posted before. An interesting history of the Allan Ramsay Allard.

In the picture below, the "India Coffee House" bearer in the middle B&W photo makes me think it was taken in Calcutta.

Re: Indian Motor Sport pre 1965

Though technically after 1965, this shouldn't be out of place here. A Fiat 1100 (between 1968 and 1972) taking part in the second Asian Highway Motor rally

Dear Karl - no please, this is the first time I am seeing a photograph of MRC6655. It looks so nice even after the damage, naa? Just rambling, but maybe MRF6466 needs a period color after all, what say? .

I know that this thread is pre-65 but do you have pictures of the Juhu races of February 1976 and 1977? The names of people who raced were Maharaj Kumar of Gondal, Manjit Singh Lamba, Ranjit Singh (in his herald merrily lifting a wheel at every turn), Pradip Dani (in his very fast Luna) and if I remember correctly, Darayus and Katie Bhathena, Sunil Shanbhag and Adi Malgham also raced. There was a 3 lap sprint and a 15 lap grand prix. I remember to have seen the Gondal car spin-off the track.

Best regards,

Behram Dhabhar

Re: Indian Motor Sport pre 1965

Jehangoo Nickolson was perhaps one of the few who raced well into his seventies. He had a number of cars and participated in almost all races organised in India.

Does anyone have pictures, especially of the Fiat 124 if I am not mistaken, which was a favourite of his?

His interests were diverse, and included car racing and modern art.

He gave away a large number of his paintings in his life time to the NCPA Bombay and left the rest to the Museum.

He had a treasure trove of pictures related to transport amongst others. hopefully they survive .

Re: Indian Motor Sport pre 1975

Apparently, a while ago someone contacted T-bhp about a Bentley Saloon which they now own, and which was raced in India sometime in the 1950's.

I was told about this while rummaging through my stuff with our dear T-bhpian Karl who spotted this in an old magazine and suggested that I put this up. So here it is, the Bentley Saloon which raced in and around Calcutta. This photo is from 1952/53. The Bentley was dark green in colour at that time.

The owner at that time was a Mr. C. C. Sandys-Lumsdaine who was also the then president of the Calcutta Motor Sports Club.

I was given to understand that the car been subsequently re-bodied. I have enlarged the section of the photo showing the Bentley for a bigger picture.

Looking forward to some feedback and additional information.

Cheers harit
