We are a family of four adults with two cars. One car does 80kms / day on an average and the other one does the city commute.
It swaps places as per the availability and requirement.

History of our cars can be seen in the below chart

Why do I need a car ?

Getz Crdi

Ford Figo TDCI

What do I want or plan to do ?

What are the options i see ?

Polo 1.5 D
Best looking hatchback
Sweet engine.
Robust and good handling.

Why not ?

a) Emission scandal
b) Maintenance and service parts cost is insane if something goes wrong.
c) No space for rear passengers

Maruti Ciaz
Another beautiful car
Loaded with all the features.
Reliable and Maruti service

Why Not ?

a) 4.3 m sedan to be driven alone daily in traffic. No sense to me.
b) 1.3 DDIS Engine is sedate for this car.
c) Tin can shell.

Maruti Baleno
Stunning looks.
Over loaded with features
Reliable workhorse from Maruti

Why not ?
a) Flimsy build.
b) Seats (Especially the rear) is pathetic.
c) Interior quality is ultra cheap.
d) NVH is average

Ford Ecosport

Sweet looking mini SUV
Good engine.
Robustness of a Ford

Why not ?

a) Current Ecosport might be at the end of life cycle. New one expected in 2016.
b)Another Ford in the house, with service center 40kms away. NO !

Ford Aspire/ New FIGO
Different and nice looking car
Amazing engine tune.(Tempting)
Features loaded

Why not ?
a) It ain't built like a FORD
b) Another Ford in the house, with service center 40kms away. NO !
c) Seats narrow like the old Figo.

Hyundai i20 Elite

Looks stunning
Features loaded
Premium finish inside out.
Top notch refinement (Best NVH for a diesel)

Why not ?

a) Waiting period 2 months
b) Service cost is crazy. Hyundai is looting customers these days.
c) Not a great handling car. (Steering feedback is disappointing)

Maruti Scross 1.3 Alpha (Top end)
Spacious
Features rich
Premium build quality unlike any other Maruti.
Handles well
ABS and 4 disc brakes

Why not ?
a) 1.3 DDIS engine is sedate for a 11 lac car
b) Boring looks

Maruti Scross 1.6 Delta (Base model)
Engine made me grin like I did 8 years back while test driving the Getz Crdi.
Premium build quality unlike any other Maruti.
Handles well
ABS and 4 disc brakes

Why not ?

a) Price
b) Price
c) Price
d) No Auto AC
e) No Alloys
f) No Projector headlamps

Please suggest if I'm missing out some cars and help me solve the car buying puzzle.
Also, the Delhi rule of odd/ even number cars and diesel ban has made things even worse for me.

Thanks in advance.

How about the Honda City or Jazz diesels? Or if not the polo, a Vento perhaps?

Toyota Etios too is an option. It looks outdated & the interior is a let down. But you will get top notch reliability.

Another option is the top end Zest diesel, but you might find the boot space inadequate.

The S-cross too is not a bad option IMHO.

You can consider the Figo Aspire as it gives you the benefits of Figo plus the boot for added storage space.

From the cars you have mentioned, Scross looks like it fulfills all your requirements. Also, it is one of the newest cars of the lot.

Fiat linea is another well rounded product which will give you the same handling pleasure as your Figo. Also, there are huge discounts on the older stocks.

Sedans.. Rapid and Vento, I have a rapid with 75k kms and it has been incident and trouble free all through.
And just to put a few more names in the mix.. Duster and Creta (though it sounds like you won't have another Hyundai)

The Honda Jazz or The Honda City are your best bets. You can go in for the iDtec for excellent t fuel economy or the AT for peace of mind. Honda service is also quite good and these cars should serve you well for many years to come. Passenger space and boot space is also best in class in both the vehicles. Hope this helps.

If VFM is not a concern, you can test drive Jazz VX diesel.

1) Very spacious and can comfortably seat 4 adults.
2) Loaded with safety features.
3) It can be used for city commute as well for highway trips.
4) Magic seats provides flexibility during highway trips.
5) Fuel efficient.

Satan
My Getz is a 110 bhp diesel which runs on box at 130 bhp.
Toyotas with 68 bhp and horrendous interior cant replace the Getz. Reliability is not everything.

Chevrolets & Tatas are out. See the ownership pattern. We keep cars for min 5 years. I cant take the risk of having an obsolete model within a year of buying.

Duster is knocking our doors as an option to be considered.

Figo Aspire - The seats need to checked again with a long test drive.
Currently, I'm struggling with my Figo's seat for comfort during long journeys.

Guess, your Rapid must be a 1.6. :thumbs up
The 1.5 isn't the same.
No Hyundai.

Hondas are out for.
a) Ground clearance
b) Diesel engine neither thrilling nor refined enough. Efficient though.
c) Overpriced - Jazz
d) None of the new Hondas are built like a ANHC or 3rd gen City.

If it happens to be a Honda, it will a iVTEC.

S-cross/Creta might suit your requirements best. The rest from your list dont seem to match the original KPZen I remember.

KP, some of the options don't make sense. I mean a S-cross 1.3 after the Pete'd Getz is just too much of a downgrade.

My 1st choice is the S-cross 1.6, irrespective of variant you choose. Since it has safety covered, you don't have to worry about other features missing since you are already in a bare bones Getz. It's going to be more than the Getz for sure.

2nd choice will be the Chevy Cruze LT. Old but still a stonker in the engine department. It should be around 15-16 but I'm sure they have very deep discounts running.

3rd will be the Polo GT TDI as it's the only one that can come close to your older Getz.

I would have asked you to look at the Aspire or the Figo TDCI but you already have a Figo and I can guarantee you will be disappointed with the new Figo's dynamics vs the old one. The engine will blow you away but the dynamics are very un Ford like.

Guys, before recommending an option do note the previous cars owned by Kp. He had a Baleno 1.6, Getz CRDI remapped to 130BHP and now a remapped Figo TDCI.

It's pretty clear that all cars he has owned are out and out drivers' cars.

A TUV or a Sail or a Liva in the same thread as these cars is kind of amusing.

Maybe you should have a look at Mahindra TUV .

S Cross 1.6 might be an option too except for the budget.

Fiat Avventura?

Vento tsi, though a petrol, gives good mileage, very comfortable ,spacious and pure driving pleasure. And you need not worry about the diesel ban either.

The Getz CRDI is simply too difficult to replace, especially with the diesel cars in the 8-12 lakh range.

My choices would be: (In the decreasing order of priority)

1. S Cross 1.6: Even Delta version would do. Forget the alloys for a while. This car will give you the widest smile.

2. S Cross 1.3+Remap:

In the current map, I can drive it everyday like a stock map and when I feel like driving spiritedly, then that's possible too. Earlier, the engine was sluggish after 3000 RPM but now the engine is generating about 118 PS/255 Nm of torque. Further, I am not sure if there will be problems when switching the maps. Although not 100% sure, there is a chance that your security codes for the immobilizer, the keyfob may go out of sync. This happened with us during the remap and the car wouldn't start, but the problem was fixed easily. Sajan is very confident & excellent with his work and always ready to take on any questions and support you as needed after the remap.
3. Renault Duster 110: It's a good car which handles well too. You'll not have the best interior too. There are heavy discounts though.

4. Honda Mobilio/Jazz: The mobilio has poor interiors and a 5 speed transmission that makes the Jazz a better choice.

5. Hyundai Creta 1.4: I know this isn't powerful. But there are remaps for the 1.4 U2 CRDI. Please check code 6's page on facebook

Others: Polo GT TDI, Ford Aspire, Ford Figo. VW is best avoided with heavy use. You don't want Ford for obvious reasons. (I've heard that changing the tyres to a 195mm improves handling :) )

So many petrol cars: Honda City, VW Polo TSI, EcoSport EcoBoost :(

2 things for sure, if you are buying a diesel car now you would get the best of discounts in Delhi, especially on stock that the Dealer is carrying and if you buy a petrol you would be hedged against the Government policy at the moment but your running costs will take a double whammy, more costly fuel and less fuel efficiency

How about a German? A pre-worshipped one from the big three? They will tick all your boxes except the maintenance part. You can counter that by buying parts online and discover a friendly neighbourhood garage that specialises in imports closer to your place

Just going through the recent posts.. I think the field has narrowed down.. S cross 1.6 and Duster seem to be leading.

Adventura abarth, will be interesting to say the least.. Though the tall suspension will take away some of the handling.

Yes, I do have a 1.6 rapid. Still awesome!

And yes on the figo (last gen), we have one too.. The rear seat is quite bad and much worse than the front. And even though I love the figo, driving that after our rapid always makes you realize that the Ford clutch could have been lighter.

If ever the choice shifts to Petrol, do take a TD of Linea TJet and Punto Abarth -- seeing the pattern of your cars, I think these two will light up your face with a wide grin.

Also, do take a TD of Linea MJD, if you are going the remap way - there are few maps available which have made the owners smile a lot than their stock cars.
